FINALS

GAME 3

EXPRESS vs FREEZER 10

Tuesday May 9

The deciding third game.  FREEZER 10 is not in a good situation.  Short bench + shootout loss = tired legs & frustration.  Tom Page, the head referee, indicates that both periods will be of 15 minutes instead of the 20 that were allowed for GAME 2.

The EXPRESS, pumped up with their shootout win, begin the game aggressively, as expected.  From the faceoff, they impose an offensive presence.  The ball does not exit the FREEZER zone and this inability proves costly.  Nick Kohner intercepts a clearing attempt at the right point and fires a shot towards Wai Jang.  Wai makes the save but is unable to smother the ball which rolls loosely to his right.  Sherry Page grabs the loose ball and fires it into the net.  Being at the right place at the right time.  EXPRESS 1-0 at 13:55.  Jubilation on the EXPRESS bench.  Consternation on the FREEZER bench.  Captain Sylvain Léonard rallies his troops when he makes a penetration along the right wing and fires a pass towards Ina Garabedian in the low slot.  Ina one-times the pass just inside the left post.  Quick hands and a good setup.  SCORE TIED at 1-1 at 13:00.  After this quick start with 2 goals in the opening two minutes, both teams calm down tremendously.  Shots are few and far between as both teams block and deny penetration chances.  Energy levels are low.  No sustained pressure.  But, the EXPRESS do dictate play as they obtain most of the offensive chances.  Time ticks by and we have reached just under 5 minutes to go in the period when Leonard Luedee does a encore.  Leonard takes the ball near his own net and fires a slapshot.  Once again, the ball, somehow, finds it’s way into the FREEZER net.  Big time “G.B.”  It’s not how they go in it’s how many do go in. J  EXPRESS 2-1 at 4:36.  With FREEZER reeling from this one, Victor Chernoff brings the “hammer” down when he creates a turnover in the deep right corner, circles back to the low right slot area and fires a wicked wrister just under the crossbar near the upper right corner.  Quite a shot !!!  EXPRESS 3-1 at 2:50.  FREEZER is stunned and shaken for the remainder of the period.

With a two goal lead, the EXPRESS now totally focus on shutting down Manny Tavaroff and Ina Garabedian.  FREEZER goes on the offensive but face a defensive wall and are having a hard time getting any shots through.  Plenty of blocked shots and deflections.  Sylvain Loyer is having a free pass as his defenders are doing most of the work.  Wai Jang is hardly called upon to make saves as the EXPRESS are in “shutdown” mode.  With about 8 minutes to go in the period, Ina Garabedian suddenly falls down near the EXPRESS net.  Twisting her ankle on an attempted pivot, Ina went down hard and needed help to get back to the bench.  This meant that FREEZER 10 was now down to 5 players with Kate Crosby and Anne-Marie Parent forced to stay on the floor for the remainder of the game.  Manny Tavaroff tried a few more deke moves but was constantly checked while the remaining 4 FREEZER players could not get their shots through or create better scoring chances.  The EXPRESS were doing a masterful job of shutting everything down.  The final seconds tick off and the EXPRESS jubilate when the final whistle pierces the airwaves.  As for FREEZER 10, they gave their all but came up short….Congratulations to the EXPRESS !!!!!!!!  See you all next year J

GAME 2

FREEZER 10 vs EXPRESS

Tuesday May 9

The EXPRESS face elimination.  FREEZER 10 will have to deal with some adversity as Jean Roy is not available, Manny Tavaroff is battling a flu bug and Anne-Marie Parent is not at 100%.  The EXPRESS start the match with only 6 players but it takes only a few minutes for the remaining two absentees [Alicia Cafferata and Valerie Frost] to show up.

The EXPRESS notice the short FREEZER 10 bench and focus their defensive efforts on Manny Tavaroff.  Leonard Luedee and Nick Kohner play a much more aggressive defensive coverage.  Manny is having a hard time getting free and is forced to take low percentage shots on many occasions.  The EXPRESS open the match with good offensive pressure as Tony Ricciardi uses his physical tools to create some breathing room and take several dangerous shots.  FREEZER 10 is defending well and Wai Jang has an active glove in the early going.  With a short bench, FREEZER 10 is hoping to score first, then try to increase the lead.  This would allow FREEZER to pick and choose when to go on offense.  Any other scenario will force FREEZER 10 players to spend lots of energy and this may well hamper the team in the long run.

Tony Ricciardi is creating lots of problems for the FREEZER defenders.  Several physical encounters with some FREEZER players provokes some sparks but no penalty calls are awarded.  Sylvain Loyer is rarely tested from in-close as FREEZER 10 is not able to penetrate the EXPRESS defense.  At the other end, Wai Jang is called upon more than once to stop point-blank shots.  So far so good as Wai makes the saves.  The first five minutes of the period, sees no goals, but territorial advantage is firmly in the EXPRESS camp.  For every shot FREEZER 10 obtains on Loyer, the EXPRESS get two on Jang.  A breakdown in defensive coverage leads to the first goal of the game.  Leonard Luedee is controlling the play at the left point and takes a shot.  Wai Jang makes the save but gives up a rebound.  Tony Ricciardi pit-bulls his way to the loose ball and shoots it home.  EXPRESS 1-0 at 14:50.  A big goal for the EXPRESS.  This will exact a greater energy expenditure by FREEZER.  Ina Garabedian comes close a couple of times of tying up the game when Sylvain Loyer gives up rebounds from Manny Tavaroff pointshots.  The ball though would not cooperate.  With about 7 minutes to go, the ball is in the FREEZER zone.  Réal Paquette does a give-and-go with Wai Jang and spots Manny Tavaroff heading towards the central high slot.  Just a few seconds before the give-and-go, Paquette gave Tavaroff a signal to head for that area.  The pass is made and Manny accepts it.   He shakes off his cover and cuts to the right, he unloads a high wrister from 15 feet.  The ball pinballs it’s way just inside the left post as Ina Garabedian and her EXPRESS defender were in the low slot.  SCORE TIED at 1-1 at 6:45.  This pumps up FREEZER.  The territorial advantage that the EXPRESS had is now evaporated.  For only 5 minutes though.  With just over a minute to go in the period.  Leonard Luedee fires a slapshot from near his net.  Somehow, the ball finds it’s way into the FREEZER net.  For all francophones out there, there is an expression that fits the shot… il a les “gosses bénites”.  Lucky or not, it counts.  EXPRESS 2-1 at 1:19.  The first period ends with this score.

FREEZER 10 has a good start to the second period and several more players, other than Manny, obtain some scoring chances.  Victor Chernoff, relatively quiet in the first period, finds his game and creates several scoring chances on the off-wing.  At the 3 minute mark, FREEZER 10 pulls even.  Once again, Réal Paquette sets up Manny Tavaroff with a long pass.  Manny takes another high wrister towards the left post.  Sylvain Loyer makes the save but the ball ricochets off several players and enters the net.  A very lucky goal.  Lui aussi a les “g.b”.  SCORE TIED at 2-2 at 17:00.  About 2 minutes later, Kate Crosby comes close of making a second “haka” dance when she misses a redirection attempt.  She bumps Sylvain Loyer in the process and gets called for it.  The EXPRESS don’t score on the ensuing powerplay and even take a penalty when Tony Ricciardi comes into contact with Anne-Marie Parent and sends her to the floor.  About 4 minutes later, Tony Ricciardi is involved in a ruckus with Sylvain Léonard and Manny Tavaroff.  All involved receive a minor penalty.  The EXPRESS do not score again as Wai Jang comes up with key glove saves.  Tension mounts as there is less than 10 minutes to play.  With about 5 minutes to go in the period, FREEZER gets a golden chance to take the lead when Ina Garabedian spots Réal Paquette alone in the low slot.  She makes a perfect pass which is followed by an imperfect shot as Paquette misses wide to the right.  Several catholic swear words were silently uttered.  A wild west finish best describes the final 5 minutes.  Sylvain Léonard is called for a penalty with 3:09 to go.  The EXPRESS start their powerplay but decide to make a change.  Victor Chernoff gets on too early and the EXPRESS get called for too many players.  3-on-3 play provides both teams with scoring chances but both goaltenders stand up.  With a minute to go in the period, FREEZER gets called for too many players on a bad change.  The EXPRESS receive 45 seconds of powerplay time but are unable to put it in as the period ends.  Overtime looms.

The EXPRESS have 60 seconds remaining of powerplay time to start the Overtime.  They obtain 2 or 3 chances but nothing major.  FREEZER kills off the penalty.  The EXPRESS remain on the offensive and press for advantage.  The majority of the play is in the FREEZER zone.  Wai Jang is kept very busy.  With about a minute to go, Tony Ricciardi breaks free from his defender and takes a low hard shot near the right post.  Wai snags it with a beautiful glove save.  The final sixty seconds go by and we will head for the Shootout.

FREEZER goes first and sends Kate Crosby.  Kate moves in and fires a shot directly in Loyer’s breadbasket.  The EXPRESS then send out Alicia Cafferata.  She moves in and fires a low shot that is saved by Jang.  FREEZER counters with Manny Tavaroff.  Manny moves in and fires a high shot right into the belly of Loyer.  The EXPRESS send out Tony Ricciardi, Tony dekes to his right but is denied by Jang.  FREEZER sends out Ina Garabedian.  Ina dekes to her left but loses control of the ball.  The EXPRESS puts forth Diana Tourneur.  Diane imitates Ina after she makes a deke to her right.  FREEZER sends out Réal Paquette.  He moves in and takes a wrister towards the right side and Loyer snags it.  The EXPRESS send out Victor Chernoff.  Victor dekes to his left, freezes Jang and fires a wrister into the upper right corner.  The EXPRESS win the game and force GAME 3…..

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette

FINALS

GAME 1

EXPRESS vs FREEZER 10

Tuesday May 2

The regular season series was won by FREEZER 10.  FREEZER posted a 4-1 record against the EXPRESS.  Those 4 losses were the only ones suffered by the EXPRESS all season long.  FREEZER also had the lead in goals scored during the 5 game series by posting a 16-10 edge.  Complete lineups for both teams, which means 8 players for the EXPRESS and 7 for FREEZER 10.  Sylvain Loyer in nets for the EXPRESS while Wai Jang does the same for FREEZER 10.  The two best teams in the League meet.  Both have a “Big Three” unit.  For the EXPRESS [Chernoff + Ricciardi + Luedee] while for FREEZER 10 [Garabedian + Tavaroff + Roy].  How well each team will be able to shut down the other threesome will determine who will win.  This is a best of 3 series….

GAME 1 begins and FREEZER has a good jump from the get-go.  Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy are able to establish some decent ball control and obtain a few shots.  No pointshots as the EXPRESS forwards are doing a good job covering Kate Crosby and Réal Paquette.   Victor Chernoff corrals a loose ball and fires a hard shot from the left side towards Wai Jang.  Wai makes the body save and smothers the rebound.  A key for victory will be the limitation of rebounds for both goaltenders as both teams have “diggers” ready to pounce on them.  Both teams do a line change and the ball ends up in the FREEZER zone.  Anne-Marie Parent picks up the loose ball and moves up the right side.  About 15 feet away from the central line, she makes a pass towards Manny Tavaroff.  Manny accepts it and cuts towards the low slot.  Manny is moving towards the left post and quickly puts the ball on his backhand.  Sylvain Loyer is following Manny’s progress and moves off the right post.  Manny fires his backhand shot but it fails to elevate.  Instead, it rolls on the floor.  Somehow, the ball finds a clear lane and enters the net just inside the vacated right post !!  Lucky goal but it still counts J.  FREEZER 1-0 at 24:45.  First blood is drawn.  The tempo of play is very quick as both sides are able to mount rushes.  Concerning the EXPRESS, those rushes end up many times being blocked by FREEZER defenders as Victor and Tony receive “special defensive coverage”.  Concerning FREEZER 10, shots are coming aplenty as Sylvain Loyer is giving out plenty of rebounds.  Fortunately for the EXPRESS, the majority of those rebounds are cleared away.  Reaching the 5 minute mark of the period, it becomes clear that the territorial edge in play is heading for FREEZER 10.  No breakaways are being allowed by either side.  FREEZER 10 is able to put constant pressure in the offensive zone.  Roughly 30 seconds of every minute so far is played in the EXPRESS zone, about 15 seconds in the neutral zone and the other 15 seconds in the FREEZER zone.  At the 10 minute mark, FREEZER doubles it’s lead.  Sylvain Léonard pinches in and moves along the right wing.  He makes a quick dump pass to Jean Roy, posted in the high slot.  Jean moves to his left and quickly fires a shot that goes past Loyer and into the net.  Good execution.  FREEZER 2-0 at 16:10.  Confidence amongst FREEZER 10 players is now palpable.  About 5 minutes later, FREEZER strikes again.  An EXPRESS offensive rush is stopped near the central area by Réal Paquette.  He quickly spots Manny Tavaroff at the right wing low slot.  The pass is made and Manny fires a shot.  Sylvain Loyer makes the save but gives a rebound .  Ina Garabedian pounces on it and fires a low shot just inside the left post.  Quick hands !!  FREEZER 3-0 at 11:52.  The EXPRESS call a “goalie timeout”.  The team needs to regroup as FREEZER is quick off the starting blocks.  The “timeout” does wonders for the EXPRESS as they score a quick goal about 2 minutes later.  A good offensive rush by the EXPRESS is followed by good ball control presence in the offensive zone.  Victor Chernoff is moving all over the place.  The ball finds itself in the right wing area and Sherry Page fires a shot towards Wai Jang.  Wai makes the save but is unable to freeze the ball on his left.  Victor Chernoff swoops in and taps the ball into the net.  Speed kills.  FREEZER 3-1 at 9:25.  This goal pumps up the EXPRESS and you can see their confidence coming back.  About 2 minutes later, the EXPRESS strike again.  Leonard Luedee grabs a loose ball near his own net and moves on left wing.  He is confronted by Sylvain Léonard at the central line.  Leonard is able to forward the ball past Sylvain onto Victor Chernoff’s stick.  Victor moves towards the left wing slot but is confronted by Kate Crosby.  Victor spots Diana Tourneur standing all alone in the prime slot area.  Victor gets the ball past Kate and onto Diana’s stick.  Diana immediately one times it with a very precise wrister into the top right corner !!  Beautiful goal and great construction of the play!!!  FREEZER 3-2 at 7:18.  Now we have a game.  A defensive takeover suddenly becomes evident for the remaining 7 minutes of the period as FREEZER is trying to calm down and attempts to shut down a now, energetic EXPRESS team.  Offensive chances get limited and the period ends with FREEZER up by a goal.

The second period begins very well for the EXPRESS.  A complete breakdown in the FREEZER defence, allows Diana Tourneur and Alicia Cafferata to set up a point-blank shot for Victor Chernoff.  He does not miss.  SCORE TIED at 3-3 at 24:58.  The EXPRESS are in full offensive mode now.  The momentum has definitely swung their way.  In the immediate faceoff, Victor Chernoff grabs a loose ball and moves to the high left wing slot area.  He fires off a hard snapshot which is grabbed in spectacular fashion by Wai Jang.  A big save !!  About a minute later, Tony Ricciardi obtains one of his few scoring chances of the evening but is stoned again by Wai Jang.  Two key saves as it would turn out to be.  This shakes up FREEZER 10 from it’s doldrums and the team responds.  Manny Tavaroff regains his “shoot mode” function and peppers Sylvain Loyer with shots from all angles.  Play is getting rougher as well along the walls as both teams want to get that next goal.  Tony Ricciardi goes in hard against Sylvain Léonard behind the FREEZER net and a delayed penalty is going to be called on the EXPRESS.  Sylvain shakes off Tony and advances towards the opposing net.  He makes a drop pass to Manny Tavaroff who then goes for a hard high wrister.  The ball squeezes through Sylvain Loyer and lands in the back of the net.  FREEZER  4-3 at 15:53.  This sparks FREEZER and Jean Roy brings the “hammer down” about 90 seconds later.  Jean receives a pass from Captain Léonard in the high slot on his backhand.  Jean moves from right to left and brings the ball to his forehand.  Sylvain Loyer follows the movement but is a bit slow to cover an opening near the left post.  Jean Roy notices this and fires off a quick shot.  The ball enters the net just before Loyer can plug up the hole.  Precision pays off.  FREEZER 5-3 at 14:12.  These two quick goals pumps up FREEZER 10 big time.  They do not decide to sit on the lead.  Instead, they continue to put pressure on the EXPRESS defenders.  This leads to a Tony Ricciardi penalty for body contact.  Sylvain Léonard sets up at the right point and spots Manny Tavaroff deep on right wing.  The pass is made and Manny makes an “across the crease” pass towards Kate Crosby standing near the left post.  Kate redirects the pass and witnesses the ball entering the net.  Her first goal of the season !!  What followed can only be described as a British “haka” dance.  Made famous in New Zealand by it’s rugby players, a “haka” dance is intended to unite the team and instill fear in the enemy.  Kate’s “haka” goes like this.  She brings up both her wrists in a punching mode and starts gyrating.  Then she swivels her hips “Elvis” style.  She finishes off with a wicked knee on knee maneuver.  Quite a sight !!!  J    FREEZER 6-3 at 10:58.  With a possible EXPRESS team still in shock, FREEZER increases it’s lead again when Manny Tavaroff completes his hat trick with a beautiful backhand shot in the upper right corner after moving towards his left.  FREEZER 7-3 at 9:44.  Wai Jang’s two key saves allows FREEZER 10 to find “their game” and score 4 goals within a timespan of 6 minutes.  Game 1 is now in the books.  The EXPRESS must win Game 2 in order to force a third and deciding game…

GAME 2

FREEZER 10 vs TNT

Tuesday April 25

For TNT, they must win in order to force a small overtime session followed by a shootout if necessary.  FREEZER 10 only needs a tie to advance to the Finals.

TNT faces an uphill battle when 3 players are missing from their lineup.  Alison Traynor, Michel Godin and Ryan Lussier are all absent.  Vegas is not giving good odds for TNT.  Tired legs will show themselves in the second period.  The only way for TNT to make it happen is to build up a lead in the first period and hope that Jimmy Garoufalis can shut the door the rest of the way.  FREEZER 10 has a full lineup of 7 and Rachelle Salamon makes an appearance to allow the team to have 2 full lines.

The order of the day for FREEZER is to run hard and make TNT players expend a lot of energy on every shift.  The match begins and this plan is followed to a “T”.  TNT works very hard in limiting offensive chances and Jimmy G. is keeping rebounds to a minimum.  In fact, TNT has the edge in play early on as they are pressing for the first goal.  Wai Jang is not called upon to make tough saves but sees ball action around his net.  For the first 10 minutes, both teams exchange shot for shot.  Manny Tavaroff is definitely on “shoot mode” as he peppers Jimmy G. every chance that he gets.  Backhands, wristers, snappers,  you name it.  At the 9 minute mark, FREEZER is assessed a team penalty for having too many players on the floor.  A bad change resulted in 5 players participating in the play for several seconds.  TNT obtains 2 good scoring chances for Billy Ponting but Wai Jang comes up with good saves.  The penalty ends but TNT continues to put pressure on FREEZER and it finally pays off when Billy Ponting spots Brian Hazek alone in the central area.  He makes him a pass and Brian lets go a hard snapper that finds the top right corner over Wai’s left shoulder.  TNT obtains first blood.  TNT 1-0 at 14:08.  So far, TNT is fulfilling their gameplan.  Good hard work and the early lead.  About 3 minutes later, FREEZER responds.  Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy are having a good give-and-go exchange when one pass gets intercepted by a TNT defender.  The TNT defender makes a bad pass and Ina grabs the loose ball.  She goes towards the low slot and gets checked by a different TNT defender.  Fortunately for Ina, the ball is still within reach and she whacks it hard towards the left post.  The ball stays on the floor and rolls just inside the left post as there was a slight opening to Jimmy’s right.  The flow of the game would change significantly.  SCORE TIED 1-1 at 11:10.  From this moment on,  FREEZER gained territorial advantage and shots were 2/1 in favor of FREEZER.  Jimmy G. keeps his team in the game by stopping several chances and TNT still clings to hope when the first period ends.

The beginning of the second period sees FREEZER killing off a penalty to Kate Crosby that was assessed late in the first period.  This powerplay would represent the final quality offensive chances for TNT but Wai Jang would not allow anything past him.  Jean Roy puts FREEZER ahead for good at the 8 minute mark when he dekes one TNT defender on the right side, cuts towards the low slot, remains unchecked and waits for Jimmy G. to make the first move.  Jimmy acquiesces and Jean shoots the ball through the legs and into the net.  Patience gets rewarded.  FREEZER 2-1 at 18:46.  TNT can be seen sagging and FREEZER pursues ball control and offensive pressure.  About 3 minutes later, Manny Tavaroff grabs a loose ball in the offensive left corner and starts circling towards the left slot area.  Manny reaches his destination and fires a wrister that beats Jimmy G. high on his right side.  A nice shot !!  FREEZER 3-1 at 15:47.  Fatigue is evident on TNT players as more and more passes are getting intercepted and most of the play is spent in the TNT end.  Manny Tavaroff scores his second of the game off a Sylvain Léonard pointshot when he picks up the rebound and buries it high in the right corner.  FREEZER 4-1 at 8:24.  The issue of the game is now decided as TNT does not have the energy left to mount a comeback.  Manny Tavaroff scores the natural hat trick when he receives a pass from Rachelle Salamon and fires another high wrister in the upper left corner.  All three goals up high.  FREEZER 5-1 at 2:21.  Manny caps his night with a fourth goal when Kate Crosby feeds him a pass from the point and another high wrister finds the spot.  Keep some for next week Manny J !!  FREEZER 6-1 at 0:28……  FREEZER 10 advances to the Finals and will meet the EXPRESS.  It should be quite a battle as the two best teams in the League face meet.  Stay tuned….

A series that would match the playmaking abilities of Billy Ponting and Michel Godin versus the FREEZER 10 Big Three of Ina Garabedian, Manny Tavaroff and Jean Roy.  A goaltender matchup between Jimmy “The Canadian” Garoufalis and Wai Jang who will want to show the league that he can play and win big games.

Game 1 begins and both teams are like boxers in Round #1, studying and looking for holes in the opponent’s defense.  FREEZER 10 begin the match with the offensive duo of Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy.  TNT brings forth Anne Coyle and Brian Hazek.  The opening minutes feature a 50-50 sharing of territorial play as both teams obtain one or two shots on net but with no rebounds.  Both goalies do a good job, very early, not to give up rebounds.  At the 3 minute mark, Jean Roy picks up a penalty for Interference.  TNT obtains a golden chance of scoring the first goal on the powerplay but only register 2 shots on net during the full 2 minutes.  The FREEZER 10 defensive trio of Sylvain Léonard, Kate Crosby and Anne-Marie Parent do a very good job of keeping TNT to the outside and Wai was called upon only twice making quality saves and denying any rebounds.  The penalty kill infuses FREEZER 10 with renewed determination and they start gaining an edge in territorial play.  Manny Tavaroff obtains several shots on Jimmy G., mostly backhanders without warning.  Jimmy G. is solid and makes the saves but a few rebounds start popping up, fortunately for TNT, those rebounds are either missed by FREEZER forwards or cleared by TNT defenders.  The edge in play for FREEZER 10, starting at about the 6 minute mark, is indicated in a 2/1 ratio of shots taken on net.  2 FREEZER shots for every TNT shot.  TNT obtains a few scoring chances but Wai Jang is quite aggressive in cutting down the angles and swallows every shot directed towards him.  It clearly becomes a goaltender’s duel as neither team finds the back of the net.  The amount of rebounds that Jimmy G. is starting to give up though is a cause for concern.  TNT obtains successive scoring chances on one shift when Billy Ponting and Anne Coyle find themselves with close-in situations.  Wai Jang stands up tall and makes the saves.  Saving one defenseman’s ass for poor clearing [me !!!].  Thanks Wai !!  At the other end, Manny Tavaroff continues pounding shots towards Jimmy while Jean Roy and Ina Garabedian try their give-and-go tactics but are unable to put one past Jimmy G.  With just under 5 minutes to go in the first period, Brian Hazek obtains a penalty for tripping.  FREEZER 10 sees this as a good opportunity to draw first blood.  TNT does not agree and perform admirably in limiting FREEZER 10 to only 2 shots on Jimmy G.  The remaining two minutes of the period tick by with no clear scoring chances for either team.  The heroes so far are the goaltenders.

During the break, the FREEZER 10 braintrust [everybody !!] discuss strategy and it is agreed upon to continue the offensive pressure as the Jimmy Wall has to crack.

The second period begins and FREEZER 10 do, indeed, obtain shots on net and the TNT defense is showing signs of deficiency as Ina Garabedian and Kate Crosby get sent on clear breakaways but are stopped both times by the “Canadian”.  So far, the FREEZER 10 defense are doing a good job on both Billy Ponting and Michel Godin as they are not able to dominate.  They create some setups but are not dominating as the ball, more and more, is in the TNT zone.   FREEZER 10 draws first blood at the 10 minute mark.  Ina Garabedian is in control of the ball in the offensive left corner and makes a deke on a TNT defender.  The deked out defender pulls Ina down with the stick and this draws a delayed penalty as Ina was still in control of the ball, she is able to forward the ball into the low slot where Sylvain Léonard is, having moved in from the point position.  Sylvain fires the ball quickly on Jimmy.  The “Canadian” makes the save but sees the ball pop up and over him, Jimmy twists his body around to try and stop the progress of the ball but can only witness it entering his own net.  A fortunate bounce.  FREEZER 1-0 at 15:58.  The longer a playoff game goes without scoring, the first goal becomes so much of a momentum giver.  FREEZER 10 sees this “hockey proverb” become reality about a minute later.  Anne-Marie Parent picks up a loose ball in the defensive zone, she goes behind her own net and heads towards the right side of the gym.  She spots Manny Tavaroff near the penalty bench.  Manny is covered by Ryan Lussier.  Manny gives him an outside-inside move and Ryan bites.  Manny completes the move and leaves Ryan behind him as he closes in towards the TNT net.  The front of the net is busy as Ina Garabedian and a TNT defender are jostling for position.  Manny uses this as a screen and lets go a good wrister some 10 feet from the net.  The shot is directed just inside the right post and enters the net.  A great move, a good screen and a super shot.   FREEZER 2-0 at 14:43.  Momentum is clearly now on the side of FREEZER 10 as two minutes later, the “deke that never was” produces a third goal for FREEZER.  Play is scrambled near the penalty bench area when one FREEZER player sends a hard pass up the middle to Ina Garabedian who is all alone.  Ina extends her stick and touches the ball but is not able to corral it.  This gives more impetus to the ball as it is heading towards Jimmy G.  The “Canadian” comes out of his net and is preparing to whack the ball towards the right wing wall, from Jimmy’s point of view.  Total consternation on the TNT bench when they see Jimmy completely whiff it.  Not only does he miss the ball but they see it going through his open legs and roll into the back of the net !!!   FREEZER 3-0 at 12:42.  Three goals for FREEZER within 3:16.  TNT calls a timeout in order to regroup the troops.  With the TNT offense not dominating, this 3-0 lead now seems huge.  TNT comes back from the timeout with a renewed intensity as the defenders start pinching in more often.  The following five minutes see territorial play in favor of TNT as scoring opportunities mount.  Wai Jang continues his good job of making saves and limiting rebounds.  With about 7 minutes to go, the FREEZER captain receives a penalty but TNT is unable to put one in as, at the very least, 5 shots are blocked by FREEZER defenders.  Nonetheless, TNT does not relent and are finally rewarded with 3:30 to go when Anne Coyle bangs in a one-footer during a goal mouth scramble after Michel Godin had taken a shot from the offensive left corner.  Good presence by Anne and a determination to stand tall and be first on the loose ball.  FREEZER 3-1 at 3:30.   The ensuing faceoff is won by Brian Hazek who relays the ball towards Michel Godin near the penalty bench area.  A FREEZER defender moves towards Michel.  He uses this as a screen and fires a hard snapper towards Wai Jang.  The ball sails high and beats Wai over the right shoulder.  TNT is suddenly very much right back in this game.  FREEZER 3-2 at 3:20.  FREEZER calls a timeout.  To cool off TNT and to allow the team to regroup.  Play resumes and FREEZER find their defensive acuity once again.  The clock ticks down to the final minute and TNT pulls their goalie.  Billy Ponting grabs a loose ball, comes to within 15 feet and fires a wrister that is stopped by Wai Jang.  A big save as two TNT players were sniffing for a rebound.  This would be the only big chance for TNT.  FREEZER is able to kill the clock and even comes close to an empty net goal.  Game 1 is in the books.  FREEZER only requires a tie in GAME 2 to be able to advance to the Finals since this playoff round is only a 2 game affair….

La saison des Maniacs est terminée...
par Régent Proulx, le 13 avril 2006

TnT 6 vs Maniacs 5

L'arbitre a accordé le but quand même.
À l'an prochain!  Have a good summer!

SCREAMING MANIACS [4-13-2] vs FREEZER 10 [14-3-2]

Tuesday April 4

The fifth and last meeting between the teams.  The season series stands at 4-0 in favor of FREEZER 10 with FREEZER 10 enjoying a 21-6 lead in goals scored.    FREEZER 10 is missing one regular as Kate Crosby is missing.  Diana Tourneur and Rachelle Salamon help out.  The MANIACS have one absence as Evan May is not in the lineup, he is replaced by Lino Pietrantonio.  FREEZER 10 post a 4-1 record in their last 5 while the MANIACS are 2-3 in their last 5 as well.   Wai Jang in nets for FREEZER 10.  Matthew Barlow in nets for the MANIACS.

FREEZER 10 players switch positions for this game as defenders become forwards and forwards become defenders.  An experiment to allow all players to have a better “understanding” of what teammates must endure in the “other” position.  With this game having no meaning whatsoever in the standings, Sylvain Léonard decides to go ahead with this experiment.  The match begins.  Both teams indicate pretty much their colors early on as both sides open up the offense.  Jean Roy and Manny Tavaroff, now playing as defensemen, go through growing pains.  Wai Jang is called upon early to make some big stops.  The MANIACS’ Lino Pietrantonio is off to a good start as he jumps on several rebounds off Mike Callaghan shots but is unable to put one of them past Wai.  FREEZER 10 open the scoring when Sylvain Léonard fires a slapshot from the right point position after receiving a pass from Ina Garabedian.  The shot is saved by Matthew Barlow but the ball hits his chest and heads straight up, Matthew loses sight of the ball as it falls behind him and rolls into the net.  FREEZER 1-0 at 21:20.  The MANIACS intensify their offensive maneuvers and finally obtain results when Lino Pietrantonio is finally able to bury a rebound off a Callaghan pointshot.  SCORE TIED 1-1 at 18:28.  Just over two minutes go by when FREEZER regains the lead.  Réal Paquette jumps on a rebound to the left of Matthew Barlow off a Jean Roy shot and is able to squeeze a wrister between the right post and Barlow.  FREEZER 2-1 at 16:15.  Both teams maintain their offensive intentions.  Mike Callaghan scores a beauty when he dekes two FREEZER defenders, moves to within 5 feet and snipes the upper right corner with a wrister.  SCORE TIED at 2-2 at 12:33.  The MANIACS maintain the offensive pressure after the ensuing faceoff, for a full minute, but commit a disastrous turnover when Jennifer Jones-Patulli makes a passing attempt back to the left point position that gets intercepted by Réal Paquette.  Paquette goes on the breakaway along the right wing and notices Matthew Barlow staying close to his left post, thus giving an opening near his right post.  Paquette takes a low shot from a distance of about 10 feet that rolls past Barlow and enters the net just inside the far right post according to Matthew’s point of view.  FREEZER 3-2 at 11:12.  Both teams exchange chances and Wai Jang is called upon more than once as defensive coverage is not on the “to do list” for this evening.  Jean Roy increases the lead for FREEZER when he fires a backhand up into the left corner after outwaiting Matthew Barlow.  FREEZER 4-2 at 5:49.  Mike Callaghan sounds the comeback for the MANIACS with his third and fourth point of the period.  His third comes when a pointshot from him produces a rebound that Lino Pietrantonio puts away past a sprawled Wai Jang.  FREEZER 4-3 at 1:56.  The fourth point comes from another pointshot rebound when Jennifer Jones-Patulli finds a loose ball rebound near the left post and buries it.  SCORE TIED 4-4 at 0:30.  Two goals within a timespan of 86 seconds.

The second period sees more of the same style of play as neither team is willing to establish a defensive mode of play.  It resembles more a shinny game.  Jennifer Jones-Patulli gives the first lead in the match for the MANIACS when she fires a shot through Wai Jang in a side-to-side passing game with Régent Proulx.  MANIACS 5-4 at 17:05.  Jean Roy brings both teams back to square one when he completes a nice passing play from Ina Garabedian and buries a good wrister past Matthew Barlow.  SCORE TIED at 5-5 at 12:52.  Manny Tavaroff then does his “Steve Smith” imitation when his attempted pass through the middle, from behind his own net, hits Régent Proulx stationed in front of Wai Jang.  The ball comes to a stop in front of Régent who quickly fires a short wrister into the upper right corner before Wai can react.  MANIACS 6-5 at 10:32.  Not a minute later, Mike Callaghan obtains his 5th point of the match when he finishes off a nice tic-tac-toe play involving Lino Pietrantonio and Gillian Roper.  MANIACS 7-5 at 9:41.  Sylvain Léonard is sent on a breakaway by Jean Roy and beats Matthew Barlow through the legs to bring FREEZER to within one about a minute later.  MANIACS 7-6 at 8:29.  FREEZER players then try to obtain the equalizer but fail as they obtain only 3 or 4 good scoring chances in the last 8 minutes…

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette

FREEZER 10 [13-3-2] vs EXPRESS [13-3-3]

Tuesday March 28

The fifth and last meeting between the teams.  The season series stands at 3-1 in favor of FREEZER 10 with FREEZER 10 enjoying a 12-7 lead in goals scored.    FREEZER 10 is missing one regular as Manny Tavaroff is enjoying becoming a Daddy for the second time.  FREEZER 10 will play with only 6.  The EXPRESS have a complete roster.  FREEZER 10 post a 4-1 record in their last 5 while the EXPRESS are 4-1 in their last 5 as well.   Wai Jang in nets for FREEZER 10.  Sylvain Loyer in nets for the EXPRESS.

The EXPRESS lead FREEZER 10 by 1 pt in the standings.  This is the last game for the EXPRESS this season while FREEZER 10 still has one more to go after tonight.  The winner of this game is guaranteed of finishing first and will meet the winner of the [ TNT vs SCREAMING MANIACS ] 1 game playoff round.  Regarding FREEZER 10, with only 6 players dressed, time management as far as shifts are concerned becomes very important.  If FREEZER 10 needs a late goal or strong defensive play late in the game, strong legs shall be needed.  So far this season, FREEZER 10 have done a good job of shutting down Victor Chernoff [ League Points Leader] and Tony Ricciardi, the main 1-2 punch of the EXPRESS.  The FREEZER 10 defense will have to do so once again.  Leonard Luedee can certainly become a problem if his point shots hit the net with a high degree of accuracy.

The match begins and the EXPRESS are having some problems with their offense.  Several shots go wide and miss the net or several passes are off target, thus creating turnovers in the neutral zone.  Victor Chernoff and Tony Ricciardi are unable, for now, to penetrate the FREEZER defensive wall setup against them.  Sherry Page and Alicia Cafferata complete the forwards.  FREEZER 10 obtains a few good scoring chances when Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy are together on the floor, their give-and-go passing plays allows several shots from the high slot area but Sylvain Loyer proves unbeatable so far.  FREEZER carries the play more into the EXPRESS zone than vice versa.   How long this can last with only 2 players on the bench ??  Time will tell.   The EXPRESS are having a hard time getting shots through and when they do, Wai Jang is well placed to make the first save and does not give up rebounds.  Especially important when you have the likes of Victor or Tony ready to pounce on them.  At around the 7 minute mark, Sylvain Léonard receives a penalty for high-sticking.  The EXPRESS send out Diana Tourneur, Alicia Cafferata, Victor Chernoff and Leonard Luedee.  Good ball control allows the EXPRESS to setup several attempts on net but, somehow, the shots keep missing the net or hitting a FREEZER defender.  With about 30 seconds to go on the powerplay, Diana Tourneur receives the ball at the left point position and forwards a pass towards Victor Chernoff in the low left slot.  Victor, unable to make some forward progress, spins around and makes a long pass back to Leonard at the right point.  Leonard receives the pass and tees it up.  A blast !!  The ball jumps off the stickblade and enters the upper right corner.  No goalie could have stopped that shot as it was very hard and very precise.  EXPRESS 1-0 at 17:30.  FREEZER 10, like all good teams, does not waste time responding to this early deficit.  The following minute sees good pressure in the EXPRESS zone.  The ball is sent, by FREEZER 10, into the offensive left corner where Ina Garabedian fights for possession of the loose ball.  She comes out the winner against Valerie Frost and directs a short pass to Sylvain Léonard at the left point.  Sylvain takes a quick wrist shot that makes it’s way through several players and ends up into the upper right corner.  Sylvain Loyer must have been screened because he reacted after the ball had passed him by.  SCORE TIED 1-1 at 16:11.  FREEZER 10 is definitely enjoying the advantage in shots, doubling the EXPRESS output, but quality chances to score are hard to come by.  The EXPRESS offense returns to a funkish state as they are having problems finding a solution to the FREEZER defense.  Kate Crosby in particular is having a great period with her defensive play as she breaks up several passing attempts by EXPRESS players and initiates several transitions plays from the FREEZER 10 zone.  With about 6 minutes left to play in the period, the EXPRESS get very opportunistic.  A right point blast from Leonard Luedee creates a pinball effect as the ball hits sticks, legs and several other bodyparts before stopping on Victor Chernoff’s stick.  Victor lifts the ball over a sprawled Wai Jang, who had performed a big save in the previous seconds off the Luedee shot, and into the net.  EXPRESS 2-1 at 5:50.  The remainder of the first period sees not much action as both sides put up defensive walls and limit scoring chances.  The shot clock indicates a 15-6 edge for FREEZER.

The second period becomes a little more open minded as FREEZER pinches in a lot more in order to tie up the score.  This creates a few more scoring opportunities for the EXPRESS off turnovers but Wai Jang is quite solid in nets and denies every opportunity.  At the 4 minute mark, Tony Ricciardi picks up a penalty for slashing.  FREEZER sends out Ina Garabedian, Anne-Marie Parent, Sylvain Léonard and Réal Paquette.  FREEZER establishes control and Paquette sets up at the left point area with the ball.  Several passes get made and close-in shots by Ina and Sylvain are repulsed by Sylvain Loyer.  The ball is cleared by the EXPRESS at the 40 second mark of the penalty.  Paquette collects the loose ball and moves in onto the left point area.  The EXPRESS defender guarding the points, shifts towards the right point area expecting a pass from Réal to Anne-Marie, instead, Réal takes a slapshot that stays low and reaches Sylvain Léonard and an EXPRESS defender some 3 feet in front of Loyer’s net.  Suddenly, the low shot gets deflected and ends up entering the net in the upper right corner.  Either Sylvain deflected it or it hit the EXPRESS defender but I believe it was the former.  SCORE TIED 2-2 at 20:55.  Stamina is still not an issue for the FREEZER 10 players as time management is well applied.  The EXPRESS redouble their offensive efforts and Sherry Page is often the benefactor of passing plays but is unable to direct shots towards the FREEZER net.  About halfway thru the period, FREEZER obtains the lead for the first time.  Réal Paquette intercepts a clearing play in the central zone and spots Jean Roy in the low slot area.  The pass is made and Jean zings one into the roof as Sylvain Loyer was unable to come out enough to cut down the angle.  Beau tir Jean !!!  FREEZER 3-2 at 12:28.  Team timeouts and goaltender timeouts begin to get taken as both teams need them to either regroup or to stop one team from establishing a disturbing offensive trend.  As far as FREEZER is concerned, any stoppage in play is a bonus as tired legs start to appear.  From the 12 minute mark till the 7 minute mark, a total of 3 timeouts get taken.  The EXPRESS start spending more time in the offensive zone as tired FREEZER legs prohibit effective checking.  Nonetheless, the FREEZER defense bends but doesn’t break as Wai Jang continues blocking shots.  With about 1:30 to go in the game, the EXPRESS pull their goalie as they must at the very least tie the game in order to retain their 1 pt lead in the standings.  Tony Ricciardi, Victor Chernoff, Leonard Luedee, Alicia Cafferata and Diana Tourneur are on the gym floor for the EXPRESS.  Furious action near the FREEZER net as the ball ricochets and hits about anything.  Upto 5 players are near the crease area including Diana Tourneur, she finds herself unchecked near the left post with a rebound.  She takes the shot before any FREEZER defender (mainly myself) can get to her, Wai Jang dives towards her, makes the save but the ball pinballs it’s way through Wai and into the net.  One of those goals where you shake your head defensively but jubilate offensively. SCORE TIED 3-3 at 1:00.  The ensuing faceoff is won by the EXPRESS and they resume their offensive foray.  They decide to pull their goaltender once again, the EXPRESS are going for the win and a first place finish.  A shot gets taken but is blocked by a FREEZER defender, Jean Roy picks up the loose ball and hears shouting from his own bench that the EXPRESS net is empty.  Jean looks up and ahead and notices that, indeed, the enemy net is empty, Jean moves a little more to his left in order to get a better angle and takes the shot.  The ball sails into the net.  FREEZER 4-3 at 0:39.  The EXPRESS pull their goalie for the third time at the 0:30 mark but are unable to obtain even a single shot on net as the FREEZER defense simply denies it.  The final seconds tick by as Sylvain Léonard does a good job of wasting time in the defensive left corner taking on two EXPRESS players.  The game ends and FREEZER 10 are crowned Regular Season Champs.  Most likely, these two teams shall meet in the FINALS but, with playoffs, sometimes you never know….

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette

FREEZER 10 [12-3-2] vs BOOMERANGS [8-8-2]

Tuesday March 21

The fifth and last meeting between the teams.  The season series stands at 2-1-1 in favor of FREEZER 10 with FREEZER 10 enjoying a 18-11 lead in goals scored.    FREEZER 10 has a complete lineup of 7 players, Sylvain Léonard is still searching for a 4th woman player.  For this game, Diana Tourneur helps to fill up the 8th spot.  The BOOMERANGS are short one regular as Julie Chenevert is absent, she is replaced by Gillian Roper.  FREEZER 10 is currently on a 2 game losing streak while the BOOMERANGS are 2-2-1 in their last 5.   Wai Jang in nets for FREEZER 10.  Mike Silvaggio in nets for BOOMERANGS.

The match begins and both teams play cautiously.  There is room available for maneuvering in the BOOMERANGS zone but FREEZER 10, for now, is unable to make their adversaries pay for their defensive shortcomings.  Mike Silvaggio, as usual, goes down early when the pressure mounts in his zone and makes several saves down low as most FREEZER 10 shots are along the floor.  The BOOMERANGS obtain several good scoring chances from in close through good passing plays between Peggie Lamarche and Pietro Porco but Wai Jang comes up with big saves while pushing rebounds to the side instead of back in front which helps his defense out.  Gradually, FREEZER 10 start revving up the engine and spend a lot more time in the BOOMERANGS’ zone.  If the first 5 minutes of the match saw the BOOMERANGS obtain 3 good scoring chances, the next 5 saw them obtain none as FREEZER 10 was establishing dominance in the offensive zone with an almost 3-to-1 advantage in shots.  Mike Silvaggio was making the saves but FREEZER 10 were now beginning to take high shots as both top corners were open.  With about 8 minutes to go in the period, Manny Tavaroff picks up a loose ball behind the FREEZER net and moves up along the left wing, reaching the central “redline”, Manny suddenly veers to his right towards the “faceoff circle” and lets go a wicked wrister in mid-stride.  The shot sails upward and buries itself in the top left corner over Silvaggio’s right shoulder.  A beauty.  FREEZER 1-0 at 8:21.  Sensing a weakness in the BOOMERANGS defensive cohesiveness, FREEZER 10 increases it’s forechecking and keeps the ball in the BOOMERANGS zone.  A poor BOOMERANGS clearing attempts results in an interception by Anne-Marie Parent at the “blueline” on the right wing side.  Anne-Marie, still looking for her first goal of the season, fires a low shot that is saved by Silvaggio but a rebound occurs.  Ina Garabedian, wisely located near the left post, fights for the control of the rebound and starts whacking away in her attempts to put the ball past a sprawled Silvaggio.  It takes 3 or 4 tries before the ball finally ends up in the back of the net.  Perseverance pays off !!!  FREEZER 2-0 at 6:40.  Not even 20 seconds get elapsed when FREEZER strikes again.  Ina Garabedian picks up a loose ball in the offensive left wing corner and fires a good pass into the slot towards a streaking Jean Roy.  Jean takes aim and fires a good hard wrister over Silvaggio’s left shoulder and into the upper right corner.  A bang-bang play.  FREEZER 3-0 at 6:23.  The BOOMERANGS find their legs and start mounting offensive pressure in the FREEZER zone but very good defensive plays by Anne-Marie Parent and Kate Crosby, coupled with good stickwork by Wai Jang prevents the BOOMERANGS from getting on the scoreboard.  With the period ending, the BOOMERANGS finally put one past Wai Jang when a screen shot from Frank Pietrantonio finds the back of the net.  A good incursion by Renée-Claude Bastien provides a shot on net, she obtains the rebound and makes a pass towards Angelo D’Agostino who attempts a shot that gets blocked but the ball comes directly onto Frank’s stick who quickly fires a shot that goes through several legs and beats Wai just inside the left post.  FREEZER 3-1 at 1:03.

A good first period for FREEZER as their passing, positioning and teamspeed are in top shape.  The BOOMERANGS are having plenty of difficulties in their own zone and they can thank Mike Silvaggio that only 3 goals got scored on them.  The second period begins and the BOOMERANGS have found their defensive game as they are now limiting FREEZER 10 offensive chances to the “outside”.  Many shots go wide and high as FREEZER continues to test Silvaggio upstairs.   Renée-Claude Bastien is proving to be one pesky player as she is able to create several scoring chances down low for her teammates.  Wai Jang is called upon to make several stops.  Peggie Lamarche is unable to do much offensively as she is checked quite efficiently, Pietro Porco suffers a similar fate as his chances are all from “way out” instead of within 10 feet.  Nonetheless, the BOOMERANGS have picked up their game and obtain results at the 16 minute mark.  Suzanne Solomon receives a bad clearing attempt by FREEZER and makes a pass towards Angelo D’Agostino, Angelo sees at least 3 players between himself and Wai Jang and decides to let a blast go from the right point.  The ball finds a way through and beats Wai Jang.  The ball had eyes.  FREEZER 3-2 at 16:26.  Less than a minute later, Angelo picks up a penalty for high-sticking, FREEZER 10 makes him pay when Ina Garabedian stuffs a 1 footer near the left post after a good set-up pass from Jean Roy near the right post area.  The side-to-side pass was too quick and too well placed for Mike Silvaggio to react in time and crossover towards Ina.  FREEZER 4-2 at 14:33.  This goal gives some breathing room and reenergizes the FREEZER 10 offense.  An avalanche of shots greets Mike Silvaggio as FREEZER 10 is now pouring it on as 3 and sometimes all 4 players go on the offensive.  The BOOMERANGS find themselves again unable to counter this aggressive forechecking.  The score is still at 4-2 midway through the second period when Pietro Porco gets his only good scoring chance from in-close.  Wai Jang comes out to cut the angle down and forces Pietro to shoot wide.  A good decision by Wai.  FREEZER resumes control and the team witnesses “THE SHIFT” by one Jean Roy.  At the 8:27 mark, Jean Roy scores his 2nd goal of the game when a bad clearing attempt by the BOOMERANGS gets intercepted by me at the high slot, I redirect a pass towards Jean Roy located near the right post area who one-times it.  The ball goes through Mike Silvaggio as he was late coming over.  FREEZER 5-2 at 8:27.  48 seconds later, Diana Tourneur’s tenacious forechecking pays off when she is able to create a turnover in the offensive right corner and directs a pass towards Jean Roy located in the slot.  Jean accepts the pass and fires a good wrister into the back of the net.  FREEZER 6-2 at 7:39.  Jean Roy wants to change but Sylvain Léonard tells him to stay on, and with good reason, this guy was on a roll, keep feeding him !!  55 seconds later, Ina Garabedian corrals a loose ball situation in the left wing corner, dekes one player and makes a pass towards Jean Roy located, once again, in the slot.  Jean accepts the pass, moves to his left and fires a hard wrister up into the upper left corner past Silvaggio.  3 goals within a timespan of 1:43.  Needless to say, this broke the back of the BOOMERANGS who never recovered.  Superbe Jean !!!!  Bravo !!!  FREEZER 7-2 at 6:44.  The final minutes tick by without any good scoring chances for either team.

TNT [2-14-1] vs FREEZER 10 [12-2-2]

Tuesday March 14

The fifth and last meeting between the teams.  The season series stands at 3-0-1 in favor of FREEZER 10.    FREEZER 10 now has Wai Jang in nets replacing the injured Abby Castonovo.  Wai will complete the season with FREEZER 10.  Jimmy Garoufalis is now the TNT goaltender.  TNT is missing 2 regulars, Alison Traynor and Theo Michael.  Régent [the ringer] Proulx and Jennifer Jones-Patulli fill out the roster as subs.  FREEZER 10 boasts a full lineup with Julie Chenevert and Rachelle Salamon filling up the eighth and ninth spots.  This is the first game for Rachelle in a FREEZER 10 uniform.   FREEZER 10 is currently running a 12 game unbeaten streak [11-0-1].  TNT is currently on a 7 game losing streak.  With only 4 games to go in the season, Wai Jang and his new teammates will have to learn each other’s playing style rather quickly before the playoffs begin in order to mesh.

The match begins and FREEZER 10 is showing signs of rust.  The effects of having a week off is definitely perceptible.  Passing, defensive coverages, shooting are all a little off key.  Add to that constant nagging forechecking from Billy Ponting and Jennifer Jones-Patulli from TNT.  This forms a recipe for a difficult start.  Wai Jang is tested early and holds the fort while his new teammates are doing several disappearing acts in front of him.  At the four minute mark TNT strikes first.  Anne-Marie Parent and Sylvain Léonard find themselves behind their own goalline.  Anne-Marie is being pressured by Jennifer Jones-Patulli on her left side and is looking to make a pass behind the net, from the left corner to the right corner, towards Sylvain.  Unfortunately for Anne-Marie, the pass gets intercepted by a charging Billy Ponting, who scoops up the ball, makes a wraparound move and stuffs the ball inside the right post before Wai Jang can cover the opening with his left foot.  TNT 1-0 at 21:41.  FREEZER keeps receiving jolts to the system as several turnovers occur in the neutral zone as long passes are getting picked off.  TNT is doing a very good job of neutralizing Manny Tavaroff in keeping him to the outside while the other FREEZER forwards are having a hard time penetrating the TNT defense.  At the 8 minute mark, FREEZER 10 is having a rare offensive sequence.  I find myself with control of the ball at the right point and I take a slapshot which deflects off a TNT defender, Jean Roy picks up the loose ball and heads away from the right post.  Jean is moving away because Jimmy G. has moved way out front and Jean is making a move in order to obtain a better angle for his shot.  Jean Roy finally takes his shot and rings it on the left post as Jimmy G. was totally beaten.  The ball comes straight back out onto the stick of Ina Garabedian, who once again, displays a fine tuned sixth sense of being at the right place, at the right time, Ina picks up the loose ball and fires it just inside the left post for her League Leading 14th goal of the season.  SCORE TIED 1-1 at 18:47.  TNT does not waste time regaining the lead as it takes only 22 seconds for Sheila Turner to get a shot from in close on Wai Jang, a rebound occurs and Billy Ponting is first on the loose ball and fires it home into an empty net.  TNT 2-1 at 18:25.  TNT took advantage of a 3-on-2 situation.  Things don’t improve for FREEZER as they continue coughing up the ball deep in their zone.  Another turnover allows TNT to increase their lead.  A poor passing attempt through the neutral zone results in an interception by Jennifer Jones-Patulli, she moves forward on the left wing and takes a shot on Wai.  The FREEZER goaltender makes the save but gives out a rebound to his left.  Régent Proulx is “Johnny On The Spot” and receives a nice gift as he one-times the rebound just inside the right post in front of a helpless FREEZER defense.  TNT 3-1 at 15:04.  TNT is very opportunistic and being rewarded with goals from constant forechecking.  FREEZER 10 is too slow to react to the forechecking and is making way too many turnovers.  Manny Tavaroff brings FREEZER within one goal when he unloads a superb wrister from the neutral zone, through traffic, into the upper right corner, above Jimmy G.’s glovehand.  TNT 3-2 at 11:54.  FREEZER 10 is fortunate to be down only by one at this time of the game because they are being outhustled and outplayed.  TNT regain their two goal lead when Anne Coyle jumps on a rebound and her shot trickles past a sprawled Wai Jang just inside the left post.  TNT 4-2 at 7:56.  Sylvain Léonard takes a tripping penalty late in the period when Billy Ponting was heading for a breakaway.  Ryan Lussier receives a pass from Billy Ponting and fires a hard shot through Wai Jang into the left side of the net.  Billy Ponting picks up his 4th point of the period.  TNT 5-2 at 3:25.  TNT receives another powerplay opportunity when I receive a penalty for tripping, fortunately, TNT does not take advantage of this opportunity.

In between periods, FREEZER 10 regroups and discuss how to shake off this bad first period.  The talk produces noticeable effects as FREEZER 10 find their legs and start using the speed to create a higher number of scoring opportunities.  TNT is not able anymore to impose their forecheck because FREEZER 10 is able to make shorter and more precise passes during their breakouts.  Turnovers are also kept to an acceptable minimum on the part of FREEZER.  Jimmy Garoufalis gets tested more severely in the opening minutes of the second period but proves unbeatable, allowing TNT to retain their 3 goal lead.  At the other end of the gym floor, Wai Jang receives few shots and they are all stopped.  FREEZER 10 is able to be first on the ball, which was not the case during the first period, and their defense players are pinching in a lot more.  Most of the play is located in the TNT zone but FREEZER is unable to finish their scoring opportunities.  With about 10 minutes to go in the game, TNT increases it’s lead.  Kate Crosby is handling the ball in the FREEZER defensive zone in the right corner when a mistake occurs.  A rather subdued “OH DEAR ME” is uttered as she sees the ball being taken away from her by Anne Coyle who then forwards a pass towards Billy Ponting.  One deke and the ball finds it’s way into the net.  TNT 6-2 at 9:45.  FREEZER 10 redouble their offensive efforts, Manny Tavaroff, Jean Roy and Ina Garabedian obtain good scoring chances but Jimmy G. stops everything.  With about 6 minutes to go in the game, Jean Roy seizes a loose ball in the FREEZER zone and makes a diagonal pass towards me in the central zone.  A TNT defender and Julie Chenevert collide as the ball slips through both of them and onto my stick.  I move forward on right wing and about a dozen feet away from the TNT net,  I let go a hard wrister that beats Jimmy G. gloveside into the upper right corner.  TNT 6-3 at 5:52.  FREEZER is unable to pierce the TNT netminder for the remainder of the game.  The unbeaten streak stops at 12.  Full credit goes to TNT for their explosive first period forechecking and opportunistic goals.  FREEZER 10 gets a good kick in the “arse” for their poor defensive work and numerous turnovers in the opening period….

Wow!

FREEZER 10 [11-2-2] vs SCREAMING MANIACS [3-10-2]

Tuesday February 28

The fourth meeting between the two teams.  The season series stands at 3-0 in favor of FREEZER 10.    FREEZER 10 is missing Jean Roy from the regular lineup.  He is replaced by Marc Forget who is subbing for the 4th time.  Valerie Frost helps out as well since FREEZER 10 is still looking for a 4th woman player.  A full lineup for the SCREAMING MANIACS.  FREEZER 10 is currently running a 11 game unbeaten streak [10-0-1].  The MANIACS  have a 1-3-1 record in their last 5.   After Régent Proulx scored 5 goals last week against TNT, the first doping test was executed by CASC, Régent was not nervous at all awaiting the results since he kept telling anybody that his offensive exploits were more likely to be investigated by Mulder and Scully.  The WADA lab results are now in and Régent Proulx passed the test with flying colors ;-)  The MANIACS play a good defensive game but are sorely lacking offensive spunk.  Mike Callaghan and Jennifer Jones-Patulli represent the offensive threats on this team.  Greg Phendler has contributed 5 goals so far as well.  If Mike Callaghan is taken out of the offensive equation, the MANIACS have no chance at winning unless Régent Proulx shuts down the opposing offense and the MANIACS get very very fortunate on their scoring chances.

The game begins and the MANIACS get to flex their offensive muscles when Manny Tavaroff gets sent to the sin bin for a hooking penalty at 24:20.  The MANIACS send Greg Phendler, Matthew Barlow, Jennifer Jones-Patulli and Joyce Turner on the powerplay.  The MANIACS come out of their zone and Matthew Barlow legally sets up a screen in front of Jimmy “The Greek God” Garoufalis.  Jennifer does a give and go game with Joyce until the ball ends up with Greg Phendler.  I slide over to try and block Greg’s shot but fail to do so.   I turn around and see the ball heading for the upper right corner.  Unfortunately for Jimmy G, the screen setup by Matthew is so good that he never picked up the shot taken by Greg.  The ball continues on it’s way and buries itself in the netting.  Good sound powerplay tactic, shot from the point following a screen upon the goaltender.  MANIACS 1-0 at 23:29.  In the minutes that follows, Jimmy G makes two big saves on proximity shots from Callaghan and Jones-Patulli.  For the first time in several games, FREEZER falls behind in the scoring and is having a hard time in their own zone.  Those two big saves finally wakes up the FREEZER bench and Manny Tavaroff and Ina Garabedian provide a good offensive shift with pinpoint passing and nagging forechecking.  The MANIACS though are not giving up a lot of room for maneuvering as key players for FREEZER are checked.  The FREEZER bench realizes that this will be a battle just to get some open floor area.  Nearing the 7 minute mark, Kate Crosby picks up a loose ball near the penalty bench area and feeds a side-to-side pass to yours truly in the central zone.  I move in and to the right a few more feet, allowing some time for Ina and Manny to set up a screen in front of Régent, before I take a hard wrister towards the upper right corner.  Régent spots the incoming shot and shoots out his left glove hand to grab the ball.  At first, I was sure that Régent made the save as I see the ball burrow into the glove, but then, I see Manny spotting something down on the floor behind Régent.  As soon as I see Manny bringing his arms up into the air, I knew I had scored.  Somehow, Régent was unable to hang onto my shot and the ball fought it’s way out of his glove and rolled into the net.  SCORE TIED 1-1 at 19:18.  There was no panic on the FREEZER bench when the MANIACS scored the early goal.  When on a long unbeaten streak, the level of confidence receives such a boost, that every facet of the game [passing, shooting, play reads, defensive coverages, positioning] becomes enhanced and improved.  The beauty of hockey played at an increased level.  A lot of fun when you are involved in one.  FREEZER reestablishes some offensive mojo but not enough to really dominate.  The MANIACS are doing a very good job of shutting down the passing lanes down low.  As well, the low slot area is cleaned out of any blue shirted FREEZER 10 player.  At the other end of the gym floor, the MANIACS don’t obtain many offensive chances after their opening minutes as everything is now kept to the outside.  Jimmy G. can now fully concentrate on only the incoming shot and not about who is around him and are they friend or foe ??  This state of affairs is maintained for the duration of the first period.  FREEZER obtains the best offensive chances after the 5 minute mark but are unable to find holes in the MANIACS defense.   The MANIACS obtain few chances but are battling hard to keep the score at 1-1.

Between periods, the FREEZER bench discusses new tactics as it is quite apparent that the MANIACS are playing tough down low.  An emphasis on point shots is brought up.  The second period begins and the state of affairs resume themselves.  After about 90 seconds, teams change lines and few more shots get taken.  90 seconds fly by rather quickly and line changes occur.  The next 2 minutes would prove to be the downfall of the MANIACS for this game.  The FREEZER forward duo of Ina Garabedian and Manny Tavaroff do a great job of nagging, pesky forechecking, the ball remains in the MANIACS zone.  Suddenly, a loose ball situation erupts in front of Régent’s net.  Ina and Manny fight off their defenders and are able to get shots off towards the net.  Régent makes the saves but keeps giving up rebounds.  One such rebound finds itself on Ina’s stick.  She takes another shot that is saved by Régent but a long rebound occurs.  While this whirlwind was going on, I had moved into the low slot in order to help out my teammates, now, I find myself with Régent’s long rebound onto my stick.  I fire a quick low wrister towards the left post.  A prone Régent sees the ball get lifted just above his right pad and enter the net just inside the left post.  I receive credit for the goal but it’s really the great forechecking by Ina and Manny that brought this goal about.  FREEZER 2-1 at 22:19.  The faceoff occurs and the ball finds itself behind the MANIACS’ net, Ina and Manny converge from both sides of the net towards it’s back area, thus forcing the MANIACS defender in getting rid of the ball.  The clearing attempt gets intercepted by yours truly at the high right slot area.  I take a quick high wrister that deflects off a MANIACS defender, who was busy with Manny setting up a screen, and lodges itself into the upper right corner.  Régent Proulx had no chance on this.  A lucky goal but they do count J.  FREEZER 3-1 at 22:02.  The MANIACS call a team timeout in order to collect their thoughts and find their focus.   FREEZER proceeds to a change concerning their D but the forward duo of Ina and Manny remain on the field of play.  Play resumes and FREEZER continue their offensive control.  Sylvain Léonard takes a slapshot from the left point that sails wide and ends up behind Régent’s net.  Manny Tavaroff picks up the loose ball and makes a circuitous advance from the right corner to about the high right slot area.  Manny quickly decides to take a backhand shot from about 12 feet.  Ask any goaltender, the backhand shot is one of the hardest shots to stop since it’s all about reaction time.  You cannot exactly predict where the shot will go to since it’s hard to pick up the ball’s trajectory.  So it becomes a situation of how well can the goalie react once he sees the ball on it’s way.  Manny then takes the backhand shot and it is a riser.  Régent has gone down to cover anything down low but now sees that the ball is rising and heading for the crossbar.  He can only hope to lift his shoulders and pray that the ball hits him.  It does not.  The ball just goes in underneath the crossbar.  Good shot Manny !!!  FREEZER 4-1 at 20:36.  3 goals inside 2 minutes of play.  With a 3 goal lead now established, FREEZER plays shutdown and commits to a further checking job upon Mike Callaghan.  The MANIACS find themselves hard pressed to come up with good scoring chances.  When a few do occur, either the pass is a little off or the shot is not strong enough or Jimmy G makes the save.  Time flies by rather quickly as there are few stoppages in play.  We are now down to the final two minutes when Marc Forget picks up a loose ball in the offensive right corner.   He dekes around one MANIACS defender and spots an incoming Sylvain Léonard unchecked into the low slot.  Marc makes a seeing-eye pass through the slot area onto Sylvain’s stick.  Sylvain one-times it and fires the ball just inside the left post before Régent can make it to that post to cover the angle.  Nice pass and good shot !!!  FREEZER 5-1 at 1:07.  The final minute trickles down when the MANIACS are able to put one by Jimmy G.   Régent Proulx makes a save off a long shot and redirects the rebound towards Mike Callaghan.  Mike proceeds to move into the offensive zone on the right wing and takes a shot.  Jimmy G. makes the save but gives up a rebound.  Jennifer Jones-Patulli is first on the ball and fires a low shot just inside the left post past a stretched out Jimmy G.  The ball nudges the post and enters the net.  Good shot Jennifer !!  FREEZER 5-2 at 0:15.

Maniacs 10 vs TnT 5

Ah oui, Evan May a compté un autre but!  Keep it up Evan!

À la fin de la partie, Billy est venu lancer une petite flèche à Greg Phendler: how come you have 5 goals in 14 games, and Reggie got 6 in 2 games!! On verra bien!

EXPRESS [10-2-3] vs FREEZER 10 [10-2-2]

Tuesday February 21

The fourth meeting between the two teams.  The season series stands at 2-1 in favor of FREEZER 10.    THE EXPRESS are missing two of their regular women players,   Suzanne Solomon and Sherry Page fill in the empty slots.  FREEZER 10 find themselves one short as Isabelle Allard is unable to attend.  She is replaced by Jennifer Jones-Patulli.  THE EXPRESS have a 3-0-2 record in the last 5 while FREEZER 10 presents a perfect 5-0 record in their last 5.  THE EXPRESS have a formidable offensive threesome in the likes of Victor Chernoff, Tony Ricciardi and Leonard Luedee.  Unfortunately for THE EXPRESS, there is not much else offensively speaking after that and this is where the EXPRESS are lacking.  If 2 of those big three are silenced by the opposition, the EXPRESS find themselves in big trouble.  FREEZER 10’s main asset are the quality of it’s women players.  Including games played this Feb.21st, here is a stats rundown of offensive production for each team.

WOMEN

FREEZER 10  (21G + 36A) = 57 PTS

BOOMERANGS  (10G + 36A) = 46 PTS

THE EXPRESS  (10G + 33A) = 43 PTS

TNT  (14G + 19A) = 33 PTS

SCREAMING MANIACS  (10G + 14A) = 24 PTS.

MEN

THE EXPRESS (60G + 32A) = 92 PTS

BOOMERANGS (50G + 30A) = 80 PTS

FREEZER 10 (46G + 31A) = 77 PTS

TNT (35G + 36A) = 71 PTS

SCREAMING MANIACS (28G + 23A) = 51 PTS

The stats include all points from regulars and subs.  So, FREEZER 10 combines the offensive prowess of Ina Garabedian and the quality defensive play of Kate Crosby and Anne-Marie Parent.  One key reason why the team is doing so well.

A possible Finals preview concerning this game between THE EXPRESS and FREEZER 10.  As described above, the defensive game plan for FREEZER 10 was to prevent Leonard Luedee from teeing it up at the point while shadowing Victor Chernoff and Tony Ricciardi as much as possible.  Sylvain Loyer in nets for THE EXPRESS while Jimmy “The Greek God” Garoufalis is in nets for an injured Abby Castonovo.  Abby has reinjured his knee and is most likely done for the rest of the season.  Get well Abby !!!  The game begins and a fast tempo is quickly established by both teams.  No defensive chess match like the previous 2-1 game won by FREEZER 10.  Both teams open the game and pinch in as the situation dictates.  In the early minutes, most of the shots taken by THE EXPRESS are from the outside as Jimmy G. is not severely tested.  FREEZER 10 meanwhile enjoys a few more quality scoring chances but Sylvain Loyer uses his solid goaltending style to plug up any holes and limits rebounds to a minimum.  In the first 6 minutes, Leonard Luedee finds himself unable to take his powerful slapper towards Jimmy G. as either Manny Tavaroff or Jean Roy are doing a terrific job of covering him.  THE EXPRESS thus find their offensive chances in the ballhandling plays from Tony Ricciardi and Victor Chernoff.  They find, however, always a stick or a body part in the way as the FREEZER 10 D corps (Crosby, Parent, Léonard & Paquette) do a good job of getting in the way and allowing Jimmy G. to concentrate only on the shot.  Nearing the 9 minute mark of the period, FREEZER 10 draws first blood.  Anne-Marie Parent picks up a loose ball near the penalty bench and spots Ina Garabedian in the right wing corner.  Anne-Marie forwards a pass to Ina.  Ina spots Jean Roy unmarked some 10 feet from the left post.  Ina makes a hard and precise pass onto Jean’s stick.  He accepts it and sees Sylvain Loyer stretching from his left to his right.  But there remains a little opening just inside the left post.  Jean Roy fires off a shot that squeezes itself in the small opening and opens the scoring.  A good play construction !!  FREEZER 1-0 at 18:15.  THE EXPRESS find a new offensive groove when Leonard Luedee is able to free himself from the pesky opposition and unloads a few slappers.  Jimmy G. performs save after save by playing the angles and redirects rebounds to his D who are able to clear the zone or go on the offensive.  Sylvain Loyer provides plenty of good stops as FREEZER goes down low on several shots.  High shots turn out to be stopped as well as there is not much to shoot at.  Sylvain Loyer is always square to the shooter and stands up, thus covering a huge portion of the net.  He only goes down when he has no other option and it is there where he is vulnerable as his side-to-side movement is not as quick.  It may prove to be the only way to beat him in this game.  High intensity and very clean hockey provides a good game.  The FREEZER   D corps pinch in more often than the EXPRESS  D corps and this provides several good scoring chances, but, once again, Sylvain Loyer stops everything.  Halfway through the period and it can be established that FREEZER 10 has a slight advantage in play but not much.  Anne-Marie Parent displays her good defensive skills when she is able to neutralize three scoring chances on a single shift by placing whatever is available in the way.  This dedication to block shots is great to see ;-)  Lâche pas A-M !!  Nearing the 20 minute mark, FREEZER 10 doubles it’s lead.  Good forechecking in the EXPRESS defensive zone by the offensive duo of Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy provokes a turnover in the central zone as a bad clear is intercepted by myself.  I advance a few feet and let go a good high snapper towards the right corner.  Sylvain Loyer makes the save but gives up a rebound that lands at his feet to his right.  Ina Garabedian picks up the loose ball, moves a little bit towards her left and fires the ball just inside the left post before Loyer can recover.  Another opportunistic goal from Ina who knows where to position herself for offensive rebounds on incoming point shots.  Bella Ina !!  FREEZER 2-0 at 6:37.  About a minute later, Jean Roy goes down hard behind the EXPRESS net and Leonard Luedee receives a 2 minute penalty.  The FREEZER powerplay is not sharp enough on this occasion and the 2 minutes go by rather quickly.  THE EXPRESS buzz around Jimmy G. in the ensuing minutes and Victor Chernoff is unable to push a loose ball into an empty net as scrambling FREEZER defenders rush to the aid of their sprawling goaltender.  The final minute is declared when the ball is in THE EXPRESS zone.  Once again, good forechecking by Ina and Jean forces a long diagonal pass attempt by THE EXPRESS.  I find myself making a good read on the play and I intercept the attempted pass, Leonard Luedee charges towards me but I am able to flip the ball over his stick and into an open area in the right wing highslot.  Jean Roy picks up the loose ball and heads for a breakaway.  He fakes a shot and forces Sylvain Loyer to go down, then he proceeds to veer sharply to his right, the ball on his backhand, and fires this backhand along the floor, into the small opening just inside the right post.  Un autre beau but en echappée Jean !!!  FREEZER 3-0 at 0:44.  The score almost goes 4-0 for FREEZER when Manny Tavaroff is sent in all alone but Sylvain Loyer makes a big save and the period ends.

The second period maintains it’s good tempo right from the get-go.  THE EXPRESS are more determined as Victor and Tony redouble their offensive efforts.   Jimmy G. is called upon to make more big saves as THE EXPRESS definitely have the edge in the opening minutes of the second period.  FREEZER weathers the storm and increase their lead 8 minutes into the period.  Jennifer Jones-Patulli charges into the right wing corner and comes up with the ball.  She spots Manny Tavaroff partially open in front of Sylvain Loyer.  She makes a hard pass that hits on of Manny’s feet and is rolling towards Loyer.  Manny quickly taps the ball with his stick and the forward progress carries the ball through the legs of Loyer and into the net.  A bang-bang play.  Credit Manny’s quickness in being able to touch the ball with his stickblade after the foot contact.  FREEZER 4-0 at 18:32.  This fourth goal deflates THE EXPRESS as their hoped for comeback suffers a setback. With about 5 minutes to go in the game, THE EXPRESS finally solve Jimmy G.  Kate Crosby corrals a loose ball behind the FREEZER net and is attempting to move towards the left side when Victor Chernoff comes swooping in at full speed behind her and is able to take the ball away from her.  Kate utters a very bad Québécois word, a Catholic item that starts with the letter C, as she sees Victor starting a wraparound move towards Jimmy G.’s left post.  I do a good pylon imitation as I stand motionless for a few seconds when I finally realize what Victor is about to do and fail to help my defensive partner out.  Jimmy G. caught the same virus and was too late in sliding over towards his left post as he sees Victor burying the wraparound into the back of the net.  Good forechecking by Victor there.  FREEZER 4-1 at 5:25.  The final 5 minutes tick off without any serious scoring chances for either side….

Express 6 vs Maniacs 3

J'ai pu scoré un but! (YEAH!).

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette

BOOMERANGS [6-6-2] vs FREEZER 10 [9-2-2]

Tuesday February 14

The fourth meeting between the two teams.  The season series stands at 1-1-1.    Only 3 women on the roster for both teams as Alicia Cafferata and Isabelle Allard are missing respectively for the BOOMERANGS and FREEZER 10.  The BOOMERANGS have a 3-1-1 record in the last 5 while FREEZER 10 presents a perfect 5-0 record in their last 5.  If Mike Silvaggio is on his game, FREEZER 10 will encounter some problems as this goaltender gives fits to many FREEZER 10 shooters with his post-to-post goaltending style.  As for FREEZER 10, they are riding a 9 game unbeaten streak.  Their last defeat was at the hands of these same BOOMERANGS by a 4-2 score.

The match begins and FREEZER establishes a good solid tempo with the offensive duo of Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy.  Good ball control brings a long presence in the offensive zone.  The BOOMERANGS rely on Pietro Porco and Peggie Lamarche for their offensive output.  FREEZER 10 was fully intent in shutting them down.  The two snipers found a tight FREEZER defense and were unable to create scoring chances.  Manny Tavaroff, who scored 4 goals in the previous week, continues his scoring touch when he allows FREEZER to take the lead.  The ball was in the central faceoff circle when I was able to wrestle it away from a BOOMERANGS forward and relay it to Manny only a few feet ahead of me.  Manny heads to the right wing high slot and lets go a powerful snap shot which beats Silvaggio just inside the right post.  FREEZER 1-0 at 20:43.  For every shot that the BOOMERANGS take, FREEZER take two.  This leads to a game where FREEZER 10 setup several scoring chances but Mike Silvaggio comes up big and keeps the score at 1-0.  FREEZER obtains a powerplay at the 15 minute mark, 5 shots on net gets taken but, once again, Mike Silvaggio makes every save and allows his team, so far outplayed offensively, to remain in the game.  With about 8 minutes to go in the period, my vote for the prettiest goal of the season occurs.  Kate Crosby grabs a loose ball in the FREEZER zone and spots Jean Roy along the right wing wall near the central point of the gym.  Jean spots Ina Garabedian breaking free from her defender and heading towards the left post.  Jean must make a very hard diagonal pass through a small opening.  He makes the pass and it succeeds.  Ina receives the pass on the run and heads towards Mike Silvaggio.  She makes a small headfake towards her left, this forces Silvaggio to stay put near the left post, then, suddenly, Ina breaks to her right while Silvaggio, immobile, now tries to follow her.  Ina takes a low shot along the floor that rolls underneath Silvaggio who tried to lunge towards Ina in order to make the save.  The ball rolls to the back of the net.  All of this within a span of 5 seconds top.  A great goal !!  FREEZER 2-0 at 8:24.  About a few minutes later, the BOOMERANGS obtain their best chance to score when Pietro Porco intercepts a long pass attempt through the high slot by Sylvain Léonard.  Pietro takes a few steps forward and fires a quick snapper towards the upper right corner but gets denied by a terrific glove save from Abby Castonovo.   A key save as this keeps the score 2-0.  FREEZER regains the upper hand and Manny Tavaroff in particular obtains many chances but fails to put anything behind Silvaggio.  As the period ends, FREEZER increases their lead.  I find myself in possession of the ball and I move forward towards the high slot.  A shot gets taken and Silvaggio makes the save but gives up a rebound to his right.  Ina Garabedian scoops up the rebound and fires a shot past the BOOMERANGS goalie.  FREEZER 3-0 at 1:05.

FREEZER 10 is in control of the game but a quick early goal by the BOOMERANGS and things can get complicated.  Manny Tavaroff takes charge in the early goings when he increases the lead.  Anne-Marie Parent and Sylvain Léonard exchange passes when Sylvain spots Manny in the left wing high slot.  Manny accepts the pass and immediately “pops the bottle” in the upper left corner with a very hard wrist shot.  Silvaggio was down and covering everything down low.  FREEZER 4-0 at 22:12.  The BOOMERANGS try to rally and Angelo D’Agostino pinches in more often in order to help out the forwards.  He obtains a few shots on Abby Castonovo but the FREEZER 10 goaltender proves impenetrable.  On a few shifts, Peggie and Pietro team-up and the BOOMERANGS obtain more scoring chances but are unable to find the back of the net.  About midway through the period, Sylvain Léonard is sent forward with a pass and he takes a low shot that beats Silvaggio through the legs.  A rare feat since Silvaggio is tough to beat down low.  FREEZER 5-0 at 14:02.  Not one minute goes by when Kate Crosby sends a good short pass towards Manny Tavaroff in the left wing high slot, Manny advances a few more feet in a straight line and fires a hard wrister over the right shoulder of Mike Silvaggio “popping the bottle” once again.  FREEZER 6-0 at 13:25.  When a player is hot, you feed that player.  With 7 goals scored in the last 91 minutes of play, Manny Tavaroff makes it 8 when he accepts another good pass from Kate Crosby and takes another hard wrister from the right wing high slot area.  The ball sails above the left shoulder of Silvaggio and the “imaginary bottle” pops up in the air again.  Manny is on fire.  FREEZER 7-0 at 11:52.  The period winds down and Abby is heading for a shutout when the BOOMERANGS finally put one by him.  Angelo D’Agostino is in possession of the ball at the right point and makes a pass towards Frank Pietrantonio who is some 10 feet from the right post.  Frank takes a shot which is stopped by Abby but a rebound occurs.  Peggie Lamarche jumps on the loose ball and fires a quick low shot where the ball squeezes between Abby’s pads and rolls into the net.  FREEZER 7-1 at 2:18.  The final 2 minutes tick by without any serious scoring chances….

FREEZER 10 [8-2-2] vs TNT [2-10-1]

Un beau but. Beau but.

SCREAMING MANIACS [2-7-2] vs FREEZER 10 [7-2-2]

Tuesday January 17

The third meeting between the two teams.  FREEZER 10 winning both previous encounters by scores of 4-1 and 6-0.  For this game, FREEZER 10 needed two replacements as Abby Castonovo and Manny Tavaroff were nursing injuries.  To replace Abby in nets, Jimmy “The Greek God” Garoufalis makes his Tuesday League debut while for Manny, Marc Forget comes back for his third game of the season.  For the MANIACS, a full squad is present with Régent Proulx in nets.  With the recent addition of Jennifer Jones-Patulli, the MANIACS receive a boost offensively, but are still in need of one more scorer.  FREEZER 10 is riding a hot streak and is looking for a win that would put them in a tie with THE EXPRESS for top spot in the League.  Tom Page and Billy Ponting are the referees.

The game begins and the MANIACS start off well.  They establish ball control and go on the offensive.  The offensive pairing of Jennifer and Matthew Barlow create chances when Mike Callaghan is able to give them good solid passes from the point.  With Matthew trying to block Jimmy’s vision, Jennifer and Mike buzz around the FREEZER net.  Some shots are taken and The Greek God seems a little nervous as he is battling the ball and giving up rebounds.  FREEZER 10 is spending way too much time defending and is unable to coordinate attacks.  Change of defensive pairings for the MANIACS brings Greg Phendler into the mix.  After an offensive chance for FREEZER 10 gets easily stopped by Régent, Greg picks up the ball and moves up through the middle.  Once near the central line, he fires a hard slapshot which is saved by Jimmy but a rebound occurs.  The ball rolls back to the slot and Matthew Barlow is there to collect the loose ball.  He fires a low shot which squeezes itself through Jimmy’s pads and starts trickling towards the redline.  Jimmy twists around and attempts to grab the rolling ball but, somehow, knocks it beyond the redline and into his own net.  MANIACS 1-0 at the 3:00 mark.  This goal wakes up FREEZER 10.  The offensive duo of Marc Forget and Marie-Josée Blanchet start controlling the play and several offensive chances are created.  Line changes bring the other offensive line of Jean Roy and Ina Garabedian.  More offensive chances.  The MANIACS are back on their heels as FREEZER 10 have taken over.  Another complete change and FREEZER 10 pursues it’s offensive forays.  Marc Forget controls the ball and is returning towards FREEZER 10’s half of the gym.  I wait a few seconds and spot an opening on the right wing.  I take off straight ahead hoping that Marc will see me.  He does.  He feeds me a good pass and I take a quick shot on Régent who came out of his net to cut down the angles.  I always like to go high on Régent but this shot hit his pads and the rebound came right back at me.  Continuing forward and to my right, I see an opening, of about 1 feet, between Régent and the right post.  I fire the ball high into the far left corner and the game is now tied.  1-1 at 8:00 mark.  As the opening goal by the MANIACS brought about an increase in the level of play for FREEZER 10, so does this goal now provides the same impetus for the MANIACS.  The MANIACS elevate their play and Greg Phendler goes on several offensive forays.  Several pointshots test Jimmy G. but the FREEZER 10 goaltender stops them all.  Evan May picks up a 2 minute penalty for contact and FREEZER 10 goes on the powerplay.  The MANIACS are defending a FREEZER 10 attack when a turnover occurs.  Greg Phendler corrals a loose ball and two FREEZER 10 forwards are caught deep.  Anne-Marie Parent attempts a pokecheck near the central line against Greg but he is able to sidestep it and moves beyond the FREZER 10 defender.  Sylvain Léonard breaks off from his left point position and is heading towards the incoming Greg who winds up and fires the ball from a good 20 feet, up and over the left glovehand of Jimmy G. directly into the upper right corner.  Nice shot Greg.  Shorthanded goal.   MANIACS 2-1 at the 11:00 mark.  This creates another situation where the team just scored upon renews it’s intensity and elevates it’s play.  FREEZER 10 send the Forget-Blanchet duo and they are able to control the play deep into the MANIACS’ end.  Several pointshots are taken as well.  Régent is stopping everything but witnesses his team being unable to generate anything offensively as 45 seconds of a 60 second shift are spent in the defensive zone.  Lines get changed and FREEZER 10 continue their offensive control.  Sylvain Léonard picks up a loose ball in the FREEZER 10 zone and moves up on the right wing.  He quickly spots Ina Garabedian well placed near the left post some 5 feet away from Régent.  With an unobstructed passing lane presenting itself between himself and Ina, Sylvain fires a hard diagonal pass towards Ina.  Smoothly and deftly, Ina redirects the pass through the open legs of Régent as he was moving from his left to right.  Ina scores her League leading 9th goal of the season.  It is now a 2-2 tie at the 15:00 mark.  The MANIACS retake the initiative in less than a minute when Greg Phendler, creates his own scoring chance by moving up with the ball, unimpeded until the central redline and fires a hard slapshot towards Jimmy G.  Jimmy catches the ball, but, somehow, the ball pops out of the webbing and continues on it’s way into the upper right corner.  MANIACS 3-2 at the 16:00 mark.  Jimmy gets tested again when Matthew Barlow is able to grab a rebound in the low slot but gets robbed by Jimmy with a sprawling pad save.  Régent Proulx meanwhile stops Jean Roy on several attempts by cutting down the angles and forcing opposing players into taking poor percentage shots.  The first period ends with the MANIACS enjoying a 3-2 lead.

The second period begins with a terrific save by Régent Proulx.  Jean Roy and Ina Garabedian play give-and-go behind the MANIACS’ net when I see an opening in the low slot from my left point position.  I move in at full speed and Jean spots my arrival.  He gives me a great pass, à la Gretzky, and I fire a one-timer towards Régent.  The shot is low and towards the right post.  As I know that Régent always plays me for the high shot, I am expecting a goal.  But no !!!  Régent kept his left glovehand low and grabs the ball.  Rats !!  Super save Reggie as I lift my head towards the Heavens.  FREEZER 10 though keeps putting on the pressure and I obtain another scoring chance when Marie-Josée Blanchet gives me a pass from the right corner, I take a shot and the save gets made but the ball rolls towards the MANIACS’ bench.  I arrive first at the ball and make a hard backhanded pass towards the front of the net.  The ball bounces off Régent’s pads and ends up directly on the stick of Marie-Josée.  She quickly gets off a hard wrist shot that goes over Régent left shoulder and into the net.  Bravo M-J !!!  The game is now tied at 3-3 at the 30:00 mark.  This time, the MANIACS seem unable to find their legs as their offensive chances diminish.  It is the opposite for FREEZER 10 as they are now able to setup ball control in the MANIACS’ zone and maintain possession for upto 45 seconds of a 60 second shift.  Not too many shots get taken though.  5 minutes tick by when FREEZER 10 move ahead for good.  Ina Garabedian establishes control on the left wing and moves up.  She spots Jean Roy uncovered near the high slot on the right.  A good side-to-side pass gets done and Jean Roy starts moving in on Régent towards the right post.  A MANIACS’ defender attempts to cut off Jean but he is able to shake off the opposing player and cut back left, a few feet from the net.  Régent has gone down and is sprawled low to cover anything along the floor.  Jean spots this and with only a second or two to make up his mind, he flips the ball high and over the opposing goalie into the net.  Nice move and nice goal.  FREEZER  4-3 at the 36:00 mark.  Lines change and FREEZER 10 win the faceoff.  Marc Forget draws back the ball to a defender and attacks the zone while the ball gets sent into the far left corner.  Marc is first to recover the ball and he’s moving towards the net when he spots Marie-Josée Blanchet uncovered in the low slot.  Marc is able to make a pass through legs and sticks to M-J who one-times the pass over Régent’s left shoulder again and into the net.  Bella !!  FREEZER 5-3 at the 37:00 mark.  The MANIACS finally show some hustle and Mike Callaghan organizes an attack.  He makes a good pass towards Jennifer Jones-Patulli on the left wing.  She accepts the pass but encounters one Anne-Marie Parent.  This FREEZER 10 defender is very tenacious and finds a way to block opposing players from reaching the net.  Jennifer tried several deke moves but could not get by Anne-Marie who kept putting her stick in the way, just like Kate Crosby does.  Jennifer attempts a shot but it goes wide and ends up in the far right corner.  Anne-Marie pursues and forces a turnover over there and comes back to the bench for a well earned rest.   Offensive chances are few and far between for the MANIACS now as neither Greg Phendler or Mike Callaghan are able to generate much as they are checked with more efficiency by FREEZER 10 forwards.  Some close calls do occur, especially one with about 8 minutes to go, when Jimmy G. makes two consecutive saves and the FREEZER 10 defense is unable to clear rebounds as those clearing attempts kept hitting the legs of opposing forwards.  Time is winding down when FREEZER 10 increases it’s lead.  Sylvain Léonard picks up a loose ball behind the FREEZER net, moves up on the right side and spots Marc Forget on the left side some 10 feet away from the net.  The pass is made and accepted.  Marc either takes a shot or attempts a pass, it wasn’t clear, and , somehow, the ball ends up on the stick of Marie-Josée Blanchet in the low slot.  M-J completes the hat trick with another high wrister.  Bravo M-J !!   FREEZER 6-3 at the 46:00 mark.  This goal takes away any hopes for the MANIACS of making a comeback.  The final minutes go by without any serious chances for either team.

Maniacs 0 vs Express 0

TUESDAY POST-GAME REPORT
by Réal Paquette
Monday December 19
FREEZER 10    [6-2-2]     vs     BOOMERANGS     [5-4-1]
Third meet of the season.  The BOOMERANGS having won the first matchup 4-2 back in
October while the second matchup resulted in a 4-4 tie back in November.  A full lineup for
FREEZER 10, although, to start the match, only 6 regulars were on the bench.  Jean Roy and
Anne-Marie Parent were late, so Sylvain Léonard asked Diana Tourneur if she could help out.
Diana ended up playing the whole game even though Jean and Anne-Marie eventually showed
up.  Régent Proulx replaced Abby Castonovo in nets.  For the BOOMERANGS, Angelo
D'Agostino and Alicia Cafferata were absent, replaced by Theo Michael and Marie-Christine
Guilbert.  Mike Silvaggio in nets.  The key in beating the BOOMERANGS' goalie, is to be able
to shoot high or quick enough between the pads before he can set them on the floor in his
"butterfly" style.  Mike Silvaggio has a tendency to go down early and take away all possibilities
on low shots.  Many scoring chances get nullified when he is able to get his "butterfly" style
into play.  This creates rebounds though, but, for the most part, the defense corps of this team
is able to clear those rebounds without too many mishaps.
FREEZER 10's starting foursome [Tavaroff + Malenfant + Crosby + Paquette]
BOOMERANGS' starting foursome [Porco + Lamarche + Page + Solomon]
The game begins with mostly neutral zone play as neither squad is able to setup properly in
the offensive zone.  Régent Proulx, who had just played a 0-0 match vs THE EXPRESS only
a few minutes ago, was keen to keep his shutout bid going for the evening.  At the 2 minute
mark of the period, Theo Michael replaces Pat Page on defense and gets whistled down by
referee Tom Page.  All players were wondering what the call was when Tom points to the legs
of Theo.  He had put on leg protectors without covering them up.  This is the gym where the
B league plays on Fridays, leg protectors are allowed, but, since we are playing with Tuesday
League rules, uncovered leg protectors incur a 2 minute penalty.  It does not take long for
FREEZER 10 to take advantage of the situation.  I set up behind Régent's net and do a
give-and-go with him, I then move up the floor until I spot Manny Tavaroff on the right wing
some 15 feet from the net.  I give him a pass and Manny unloads a heavy shot.  The save is
made by Mike Silvaggio but he gives up a rebound to his right.  Karine Malenfant is rewarded
for good positioning when she collects the loose ball and fires it into an empty net.  Powerplay
goal.  FREEZER     1-0.     FREEZER 10 changes forward lines but the defense pairing remains
on the floor.  This decision pays off when good forechecking by Ina Garabedian, behind the
BOOMERANGS' net, forces a bad clearing attempt by one of the BOOMERANGS' defenders.
I intercept the ball about 15 feet from the net and fire off a hard snapshot.  As Mike Silvaggio
is going down, the ball is able to squeeze itself between his pads and into the back of the net.
FREEZER      2-0.  Ina Garabedian does not get an assist on the play but it is her forechecking
that creates the turnover.  FREEZER 10 now find themselves with a 2-0 lead with only 3
minutes gone by.  The BOOMERANGS shake off this bad start and the duo of Pietro Porco
and Peggie Lamarche start their magic by holding on to the ball in the offensive zone and
getting good close-in shots on Régent Proulx.  The "sub" goalie for FREEZER 10 is able to
turn aside every shot that he faces, frustrating Pietro Porco on numerous occasions.
The BOOMERANGS have shaken off their poor start but are unable to find the back of the net.
Halfway through the period, Jean Roy arrives and bolsters the lineup to 8 players for
FREEZER 10.  The arrival of Jean allows FREEZER 10 to reestablish their offensive presence,
the territorial advantage returns to 50-50.  With just under 10 minutes to go in the opening
period, Sylvain Léonard receives a 2 minute penalty for Contact.  A collision near the penalty
box area implicated Sylvain and one of the female players from the BOOMERANGS.  She
went down and Sylvain gets to sit for 2 or less.  FREEZER 10's penalty killers for this
sequence [Tavaroff + Crosby + Malenfant] do a very good job of preventing Pat Page from
using his heavy pointshot and breaking up several passing plays in the low slot between
Porco and Lamarche.  Sylvain returns with no damage done.  FREEZER 10 control the play
after the penalty and spend a huge amount of time in the BOOMERANGS' zone.  Good
ball control between Sylvain Léonard and Manny Tavaroff produce several scoring chances.
With the BOOMERANGS' defenders feeling fatigued after spending 3 minutes in their own
zone, FREEZER 10 profit from this by increasing their lead.  Sylvain Léonard intercepts a
poor clearing attempt and fires off a slapshot towards Mike Silvaggio, the BOOMERANGS'
goaltender makes the save but gives up a rebound to his right.  Ina Garabedian is able to
pounce on the rebound and make a side-to-side pass to a waiting Manny Tavaroff.  Manny
accepts the pass and one-times it into the net, in the upper right corner.  FREEZER     3-0.
The BOOMERANGS do try and shake things up by sending a third player into the offensive
zone, Theo Michael makes numerous attempts but fails to create any dangerous opportunities
as the FREEZER 10 defense is able to contain those rushes or that Régent Proulx gobbles up
loose balls near his crease.  Once again though, the duo of Porco and Lamarche come very
close to score the first BOOMERANGS' goal when a down and out Régent Proulx, simply
robs Pietro on a low wrist shot.  If Pietro lifts the ball, it becomes an easy goal.   Anne-Marie
Parent shows up with about 5 or 6 minutes to go in the period.  She quickly gets on for a shift
and the FREEZER 10 lineup now has 9 players.  End of the period.
The second period sees a very quick goal.  From the opening faceoff, Pietro Porco wins the
duel against Jean Roy and relays the ball back to Pat Page.  Pat then does a nifty pass
through the legs of Jean to a moving Pietro heading for the high slot.  Upon reception of this
pass, Pietro Porco lets fly a very hard wrist shot that beats Régent high glove side in the upper
right corner.  A very nice goal on a very good shot.  FREEZER     3-1.  The BOOMERANGS
spring to life with this goal and keep up the pressure as the only forward line that is working
for the BOOMERANGS [Porco + Lamarche] is obtaining several scoring chances.  But the
score remains 3-1 as the very good work of Kate Crosby, Anne-Marie Parent and Diana
Tourneur, prevent numerous offensive rushes by getting sticks or body parts in the way of
passes or shots.  The offensive duo of Jean Roy and Ina Garabedian are up to their old
tricks again and FREEZER 10 regain the momentum offensively by good side-to-side
passing between the two.  Mike Silvaggio though is shutting the door and keeping his team
in the game.  Almost halfway through the period, Manny Tavaroff lets go an innocent backhand
shot from the central "redline", the ball never leaves the floor, rolls underneath two hockey
sticks, moves just beyond the right pad of Silvaggio and dings the left post before entering
the net.  A fluke goal, but as they say, "shoot shoot shoot and good things happen".
FREEZER      4-1.  The BOOMERANGS respond quickly with good offensive pressure.
Pat Page makes of his few offensive rushes and winds up in front of the FREEZER 10 net.
Unable to contain him, the FREEZER 10 can only witness Pat Page get off 2 consecutive
shots at point blank range before scooping up another rebound, make a move farther to his left
in front of a sprawled Régent, who is now unable to move, and fire the ball into an empty net.
A very determined Pat Page scores a big goal for the BOOMERANGS.   FREEZER    4-2.
Play calms down afterwards as the FREEZER 10 defense reestablish some control and deny
any big offensive chances.  At the other end, offensive chances for FREEZER 10 are few but
still of some quality.  Mike Silvaggio is doing his best to allow his team to get back in the
game.  With a little less than 8 minutes to go in the game, Theo Michael picks up his
second penalty of the match for Diving.  Referee Tom Page judged that the contact that
resulted between one FREEZER 10 player and Michael was not sufficient for a penalty to be
called, Theo Michael took a chance and went for the dive, hoping to receive a favorable call.
He did not.  Referee Tom Page made the correct non-call on the abbreviated contact and the
correct call on the Diving.  FREEZER 10 go on the powerplay.  With around 30 seconds left to
go on the powerplay, Diana Tourneur picks up the ball deep in the FREEZER 10 zone.  She
moves up to the central area without being bothered.  Once there, a BOOMERANG defender
makes an attempt to take her out of the play, noticing the incoming opposing player and
a speedy Ina Garabedian making her way into the slot, Diana is able to make a pass
through the legs of the opposing player directly onto the stick of Ina.  With quickness and
precision, Ina accepts the pass and fires off a low shot towards the net.  The shot is well
placed as the ball squeezes itself between the pads of Mike Silvaggio.  Silvaggio falls down
and everybody awaits the results.  There is no celebration on the floor from FREEZER 10 as
nobody can say if the ball is in the net.  Referee Tom Page suddenly whistles and indicates
with his finger that a goal has been scored.  Ina's shot was able to make it all the way into
the back of the net before Mike Silvaggio could squeeze the pads together and prevent
the ball from rolling any further.  It is not always the hardest shot that scores goals !!
Powerplay goal.  FREEZER 10     5-2.  This goal breaks the back of the BOOMERANGS as
a three goal lead now seems impossible to erase with 7 minutes to go in the game.   Karine
Malenfant obtains the last good chance to score in the game when she is setup on a breakaway
by Manny Tavaroff.  Mike Silvaggio comes out of his net and makes the save but ends up
tripping Karine in the process.  Referee Tom Page calls a two minute penalty on the goalie.
With only 2:30 to go in the game at the moment of this call, FREEZER 10 simply kill the
clock and the game ends with a 5-2 victory for FREEZER 10.

Boomerangs 1 vs Maniacs 0

What does it takes to win?

Express: Tony Ricciardi avec 1 but.

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST-GAME REPORT by Réal Paquette

TUESDAY DECEMBER 6

FREEZER 10 [5-2-2]     2     vs     EXPRESS [7-1-1]     1

The third meeting between the two teams this season.  EXPRESS winning the first encounter 4-3 while FREEZER 10 winning the second meet 3-1.  A full lineup for FREEZER 10 and a return of Marie-Josée Blanchet to the team at the forward position.  The EXPRESS short one player, Carine Contreras missing in the lineup.  The EXPRESS, with the absence of CC, presented two threats up front, Victor Chernoff and Tony Ricciardi.  Both are skilled ballhandlers.  Victor possesses a nasty wrist shot while Tony fires a wicked slapshot.  Tony uses physical play to create room for him so that he can unload his heavy shot.  Victor will use more dekes and finesse play to create his offensive chances.  It would be a very busy game for Sylvain Léonard and myself who would be facing these two forwards.  The trick would be to limit their chances by playing them with a “in your face” style of play, which means that no room must be given that would allow them to maneuver into better scoring chances.  Amongst the remainder of the EXPRESS players, Leonard Luedee, on defense, would gather special attention as he does possess a hard slapshot when he has the time to use it.  Accuracy though is a problem.  The rest of the EXPRESS squad features players who are defensively sound which allows the big three (Chernoff, Ricciardi & Luedee) to go full-out on offense.

The match begins and most of the play, as expected, is spent in the neutral zone.  With FREEZER 10 rated #1 in goals allowed [23] and EXPRESS rated #2 with [24], it becomes quite clear that both teams excel in limiting scoring chances and offensive rebound recoveries.  FREEZER 10 find themselves unable to make passes into the high slot as there is always Nick Kohner or Valerie Frost taking away that area with the help of one of the forwards.  The EXPRESS were doing a wonderful job of preventing any shots from the slot.  Everything was pushed to the outside, giving Sylvain Loyer, the EXPRESS’ goaltender,  a relatively easy time making saves while limiting rebounds to a bare minimum.  In the other zone of play, FREEZER 10 allowed a few chances from the slot as Victor was able to maneuver with nice dekes into prime shooting locations but Abby Castonovo, the FREEZER 10 goaltender, stopped him cold everytime.  The EXPRESS though were able to generate better scoring chances down low due to a higher pass completion rating in the slot area.  The FREEZER 10 defense was bending but not breaking in the early going.

FREEZER 10 finally get some offensive chances when Nick Kohner goes off for a tripping penalty at the 9 minute mark of the period.  Manny Tavaroff and Marie-Josée Blanchet spend most of the 2 minutes on the floor during the powerplay and create several opportunities.  Manny finds himself alone, 5 feet away from Sylvain Loyer but is unable to find an opening as the EXPRESS goalie was filling most of the net with his “butterfly” style.  The other offensive line of Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy were unable to generate much offense as the EXPRESS defenders were preventing side-to-side passes between the two.  Very few pointshots, if at all, during this powerplay as FREEZER 10 were unable to setup the “defensemen” with scoring opportunities.  So the chess game continues as both defenses reestablish their dominance.  A playoff like atmosphere as both sides realize that scoring the first goal becomes “oh so critical” .  Not many shots are getting through but the EXPRESS do have an edge in territorial play as Victor and Tony run a lot but are kept on the outside for most of their shifts.  At the 16 minute mark, Sylvain Léonard and Tony Ricciardi get into a tussle in front of the FREEZER 10 bench.  With neither player budging, referee Tom Page yells out his now famous “YOU and YOU, to the box !!!”  Both players get 2 minutes for roughing.  About 4 minutes later, the EXPRESS open the scoring from the result of a bad clear by Sylvain Léonard.  Possessing the ball near the far wall, in the corner, Sylvain attempts a diagonal clearing play through the middle so that the ball would end up on the right wing position deep in the EXPRESS zone.  The attempt gets intercepted by Leonard Luedee at the faceoff circle.  Leonard moves in a few feet and unloads a heavy slapshot which is stopped by Abby Castonovo.  A rebound occurs and Tony Ricciardi picks up the loose ball and fires a shot towards the net, Abby makes another save but sees the ball bounce off him and into the air to his left.  Tony bullies his way to the ball and bats it in in front of a helpless Abby.  EXPRESS 1-0.  The all-important first goal is scored.  FREEZER 10 comes back with a good offensive shift from Manny and Marie-Josée but fail to light up the redlight as Sylvain Loyer is way too confident in his net, covering every angle and smothering rebounds with great ease.  The first period ends.

During the break, FREEZER 10 regroups and Sylvain Léonard gives a pep-talk in order for the team to refocus their energies towards the offensive part of the game.  The second period begins and FREEZER 10 do get off to a good start, as scoring chances start adding up, the slot area, so well defended by the EXPRESS in the first period, is now showing open areas for infiltration.  Slowly, FREEZER 10 are able to slip one player in that area and get off a good shot but Sylvain Loyer is unbeatable so far.  As for the EXPRESS, Tony Ricciardi is pretty much kept off the shooting list as he finds himself pursued leaving Victor Chernoff with the better offensive chances while Alicia Cafferata is more active in the offensive zone for the EXPRESS and is starting to become a problem.

After a conversation at the FREEZER 10 bench, Ina Garabedian goes on the floor with renewed determination and becomes an integral part of the first goal scored by FREEZER 10.  The play begins deep in the FREEZER 10 zone when Sylvain Léonard makes an outlet pass to Jean Roy.  A give-and-go occurs and Sylvain regains possession of the ball.  A quick pass to the left wing allows Ina to gain possession and move forward a little bit.  Spotting an opening for a side-to-side pass, Ina fires off a good pass to a moving Jean Roy in the high slot area.  Jean receives the ball and starts moving to his right, the ball on his backhand.  Jean notices that Sylvain Loyer is moving off the left post in order to follow this movement.  With two players in between Jean Roy and Sylvain Loyer, a possible screen shot presents itself.  Jean moves a little more to his right and with a quick flick of the wrists fires off a hard backhand shot from 12 feet.  The ball moves towards the upper left portion of the net and finds netting.  A good decision by Jean Roy.  SCORE TIED 1-1.  Nine minutes to go now in the game.  FREEZER 10 now have momentum.   The EXPRESS throw a scare when Leonard Luedee fires a hard slapshot from the central faceoff area and hits the left post dead-on.  Luckily, the ball heads for the corner and away from incoming EXPRESS forwards.  Abby was beaten on the shot but the “friendly post” is always the goalie’s best friend.  With about 5 minutes to go in the game, Anne-Marie Parent, of FREEZER 10, takes a 2 minute penalty for tripping.  She got entangled with an opposing player, sticks got jammed and the opposing player fell to the floor.  The EXPRESS now found themselves with an excellent opportunity to grab the victory with a powerplay goal.  But Manny Tavaroff had other ideas.  A superb display of penalty killing skills was presented by Manny as he wasted about 60 seconds, all by himself, moving from one offensive zone corner to the other while being hounded by EXPRESS players.  Manny would not give up the ball and could have tried two possible wraparound chances but preferred to retain possession of the ball and kill off more time.  Not one shot on goal gets taken by the EXPRESS during this powerplay chance.  With 2 minutes to go FREEZER 10 call a timeout when they regained possession of the ball after a save from Abby.  Manny, Marie-Josée, Anne-Marie and Sylvain round out the four musketeers for this shift.

2:00

FREEZER 10 start out from behind their net and make a good first pass.  Play develops towards the EXPRESS’ end.

1:30

Turnover in the offensive zone by FREEZER 10 allows Victor Chernoff to move in on the right side and fire off a wrist shot towards Abby.  The save is made and a rebound is scooped up by Sylvain Léonard.

1:15

Sylvain fires the ball towards the deep right wing corner where Marie-Josée Blanchet is located.  Marie-Josée finds herself in a battle with one EXPRESS defender.

1:05

Marie-Josée wins the battle for the ball and spots Manny Tavaroff alone in the high slot.  She makes a hard and very precise pass towards Manny.

1:00

Manny fires off a one-timer upon reception of the pass.  The shot stays low and is heading towards the left post.  Sylvain Loyer, guarding the left side of the net during the melee in the corner between Marie-Josée and one of his players, is unable to fully reposition himself and, thusly, allows an opening just inside the left post, exactly where Manny’s shot is heading.

0:58

The ball enters the net to the delight of the FREEZER 10 bench and of the four players currently on the floor.  FREEZER 10   2-1

0:58 to 0:00

The final minute sees the EXPRESS unable to pull their goalie out for a fifth attacker as FREEZER 10 does a great job of keeping the ball deep in their zone and not allowing a breakout pass.

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST-GAME REPORT by REAL PAQUETTE

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 29

FREEZER 10     6     vs     SCREAMING MANIACS     0

The second meeting between the two teams this season.  FREEZER 10 having won the first meet 4-1.  A full lineup for FREEZER 10 and a return, after a 2 game absence , for Jean Roy at forward.  The MANIACS short one player.  Assessing the lineup of the MANIACS, it was pretty clear that stopping Mike Callaghan was top priority.  With his booming pointshots and good accuracy, Mike Callaghan is the key to the MANIACS’ offense.  If he does not score, then he forces opposing goaltenders in giving up big rebounds, it then becomes the job of the MANIACS’ forwards to fight for possession of those rebounds and attempt to score from in close.

For the first 20 minutes of the opening period, a very tight defensive game develops.  FREEZER 10’s first forward line of Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy are able to make good passing plays between themselves and to the supporting “defensemen”, but every shot is either stopped by Régent Proulx with few rebounds or sails wide of the net by a few feet as the MANIACS’ defenders were blocking a lot of the shooting lanes, especially Greg Phendler and Mike Callaghan.  The only offensive chances for the MANIACS was when Mike Callaghan was able to shrug off pursuers and put the ball in play near the FREEZER 10 net.  A very good job of not allowing Mike Callaghan to shoot from the point was performed by every forward on the FREEZER 10 lineup (Roy, Tavaroff, Garabedian & Malenfant).  This very good coverage allowed the FREEZER 10 “defensemen” to reduce scoring chances and shots on Abby Castonovo to a  minimum.

FREEZER 10 opens the scoring with just under 5 minutes to go in the opening period when Jean Roy scoops up a loose ball in the right corner of the gym, to the left of Régent Proulx, and spots me, alone in the slot waiting for a hard pass.  Jean Roy produces that hard pass right on the stick and a strong one-timer is taken.  The quality and quickness of the pass and the one-timer prevents Régent Proulx from advancing outward from his net to cut the angle down.  Unable to do so, the one-timer finds the top left corner.  FREEZER 10     1-0.   Play resumes and FREEZER 10 continues to spend more time in the offensive zone.  Manny Tavaroff and Karine Malenfant both have one good chance on net but Régent Proulx denies each opportunity.  Line changes occur and Ina Garabedian corrals a loose ball in the slot and spots Jean Roy moving in from the left side.  A quality pass freezes two MANIACS’ defenders and allows Jean Roy to move in unopposed upon Régent.  A superb deke results in a second goal.  The initial move sees Jean Roy moving to his right, on the backhand, Régent follows and starts stretching to his left.  Suddenly, Jean stops and goes on the forehand to his left.  Régent is unable to come to a sudden halt and falls to the floor, still covering the lower part of the net but now immobile.  Jean Roy moves a little more to his left and buries the ball into an open net.  A very nice out-in deke.  FREEZER 10   2-0.  The first period ends two minutes later with no change on the scoreboard.

The second period brings a change of philosophy for the SCREAMING MANIACS.  Mike Callaghan moves from defense to forward as the MANIACS realize that there is not enough firepower upfront to rattle the FREEZER 10 defense (Léonard , Paquette, Crosby & Parent) who are doing a good job so far.  The period begins and the hot line of Garabedian and Roy are at it again.  The forward duo keeps the ball deep and receive timely pinches from the D for continued ball control.  Finally, it pays off when Jean Roy notches his second goal of the game when he is able to scoop up a rebound and fire off a shot which hits Régent on the chest, pops up and over his head, lands behind him and rolls into the net.  Greg Phendler was a second too late to prevent the ball from rolling across the red line as referee Billy Ponting confirms the goal.  A lucky goal but FREEZER 10 will take it.  FREEZER 10   3-0.    The MANIACS rebound from this with their best offensive sequence as Greg Phendler is able to take several shots from the point while Mike Callaghan and Stephanie Jowett combine down low to pepper Abby Castonovo with numerous shots.  Fortunately for FREEZER 10, Abby repulses every shot while Anne-Marie Parent does a very good job of breaking up passing lanes and clearing rebounds.  Having weathered this storm, FREEZER 10 regains territorial advantage and with about 17 minutes to go in the game, Ina Garabedian is rewarded for her persistence with a goal.  A mad scramble results in front of Régent Proulx and the ball finds itself at Régent’s feet.  Ina moves in and is able to prevent Régent from grabbing the ball with his glove.  Régent is down on his knees when Ina takes a shot but fails to lift the ball.  Régent makes the save but allows a rebound.  Ina grabs the rebound and this time, with a hard flick of her wrists, is able to shoot over the left pad of Régent into the net.  Second effort at it’s best.  FREEZER 10   4-0.  This goal deflates the MANIACS and Abby Castonovo sees less and less shots as the MANIACS’ offense goes silent.  FREEZER 10 find themselves shorthanded when Ina Garabedian picks up her second penalty of the season.  With 8 seconds to go in the penalty, Jean Roy completes the hat trick on a beautiful setup by Kate Crosby.  With the ball situated at the red faceoff line, Kate nullifies a MANIACS’ forward progress, grabs the loose ball, goes on the offensive, takes a shot, heads to the back of Régent’s net for the rebound, spots Jean Roy 5 feet in front of the net, makes a hard and precise pass to Jean who roofs the ball into the left corner.  A very nice shorthanded goal.  FREEZER 10   5-0.  Clockwatching becomes the order of the day as the game nears it’s end.  FREEZER 10 continues to obtain several chances.  Manny Tavaroff is sent all alone on Régent Proulx but fails to score when Régent is able to outwait Manny and force him to make the first move.  With about 3 minutes to go in the game, the “hot line” of Ina and Jean strikes again when Ina is able to make a good side-to-side pass to an open Jean, on Régent’s own right side, who fires a low shot inside the left post past Régent for his fourth goal of the game.   FREEZER 10   6-0.   With less than a minute to go in the game, the MANIACS obtain their best chance to break Abby’s shutout when Mike Callaghan grabs a rebound and finds Abby sprawled on the floor, covering the whole bottom of the net.  Mike takes a hard wrist shot from a distance of about 10 feet but is totally robbed when Abby makes a beautiful glove save to preserve the shutout….

BOOMERANGS vs FREEZER 10

The second meeting between the two teams.  The first encounter proved beneficial to the Boomerangs as they won 4-2.  Mike Silvaggio, goaltender for the Boomerangs, played a fantastic in that 4-2 win by frustrating several Freezer 10 players with close range chances.  This time around though, the intent, from Freezer 10’s point of view, was to test him from long range and go high on all shots.  If there is one weakness in Silvaggio’s style, is his tendency to go down early and giving you the top portion of the net.  This style proves beneficial if the defensive play in front of you is quick enough to prevent opposing shooters the time to set and aim their shots.  When it is not, problems can certainly present themselves.

Giving Freezer 10 a pep talk before the game, Sylvain Léonard, captain of the team, gave a few more pointers about the play of the opposing goalie.  The pep talk certainly worked on the first shift when Manny Tavaroff took a slap shot from long range and beat the Boomerangs’ goalie inside the right post.   Mike Silvaggio did not react to the shot as he was unable to see it due to two players screening him.  Freezer 10 takes the early lead and pounds the Boomerangs’ D  with several set-ups.  Mostly from the forwards as the Freezer 10 defense held back from offensive pinches during the early part of the 1st period.   The duo of  Manny Tavaroff and Ina Garabedian provided plenty of scoring chances but the good goaltending of Mike Silvaggio kept denying Freezer 10 from increasing the lead.  The Boomerangs were not able to create many offensive chances early in the 1st period as they were defending more than attacking.  Régent  Proulx provided most of the offensive chances in the first period as his various dekes were successful on several Freezer 10 players.  To the great dismay of Manny Tavaroff for one J.

The Boomerangs eventually retake some control of the game and the duo of Peggie Lamarche and Frank Pietrantonio start dominating down low.  With only seconds left in the 1st period, Frank Pietrantonio claims a rebound given up by Abby Castonovo and fires a shot just inside the left post into the net.  1-1 at halftime.

Both teams go on the offensive early in the second period.  The room to maneuver that allowed Freezer 10 to set up good offensive chances is now suddenly gone.  Pressed by incoming defenders, several shots by Freezer 10 miss the mark or end up on the chest plate of the Boomerangs’ goaltender.  Angelo D’Agostino, defenseman for the Boomerangs, is directly responsible for the second goal of that team by continuing to rush up the surface of play from his own net.  One instance proves beneficial when he was able to move halfway up the floor and unload a shot inside the left post.  Freezer 10 reclaims some momentum when a good offensive sequence initiated by Ina and Manny results in a big rebound given up in the slot.  Sylvain Léonard picks it up and buries the shot in the top left corner.

The Boomerangs regroup and reclaim the offensive chances when they are able to reestablish their dominance down low.  Régent Proulx scores the go-ahead goal when the ball bounces off a Freezer 10 player, right onto his stick.  Régent fires off a low shot inside the right post and beats Abby Castonovo. (note from Régent: it was a deke!) Both teams exchange several chances but Freezer 10 seems unable to capitalize on their chances.  The Boomerangs increase their lead to 4-2 when Peggie Lamarche scoops up a loose rebound to the left of Abby Castonovo and fires the ball into an empty net.  With a little more than 4 minutes to go in the game, Freezer 10 calls it’s timeout to formulate a late plan.  The comeback begins when Manny Tavaroff, controlling the play in the corner to the left of the Boomerangs goalie, spots Anne-Marie Parent at the right point.  The pass is made and Anne-Marie quickly spots Ina Garabedian standing alone near the left post.  A hard pass is made by Anne-Marie directly towards Ina without any interception by opposing Boomerangs players.  Ina Garabedian deftly redirects the pass up into the left corner of the net in front of a helpless Mike Silvaggio.  With just over 1 minute left to play, Freezer 10 storms the Boomerangs’ D and Marc Forget, forward with Freezer 10, grabs a loose ball in the left corner of the gym, fights off a Boomerangs D, moves alongside the backwall and ends up near the right post.  Marc Forget tries a wraparound move, Mike Silvaggio makes the save but gives up a rebound which is scooped up by Yours Truly and bangs the ball home underneath a falling goalie.  The final seconds does not provide any clear offensive chances and the game ends in a 4-4 tie.  No penalties were called during the game.

Express 6 vs Maniacs 1

Express 7 vs Boomerangs 4

TnT 5 vs Maniacs 3

Wow!  TnT devrait changer de nom pour TnQ...THEY NEVER QUIT!

Freezer 3 vs Express 1

Express 4 vs Freezer 3
