FINALS

BEST OF TWO GAMES – TOTAL PTS

FREEZER 10 vs XY FACTOR

GAME 2

Full lineup for both teams.  Bruce Coupethwaite in goal for XY FACTOR.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.

FIRST PERIOD

FREEZER must win this second match of the series in order to force a 20 min mini-game.  From the opening faceoff, FREEZER spend quality time in the offensive zone as they try to send the message that it will be a long night for the XY FACTOR defense.  Chris Munro [#12] receives special surveillance as he is identified as the key player.  Both goalies are not severely tested in the first 5 minutes.  Then, FREEZER obtains first blood when a drop shot, sort of a wedge shot with some spin, is directed from near the FREEZER net towards Coupethwaite by Réal Paquette [#3].  The ball lands in front of the XY FACTOR goalie and takes a hop to his left as he is sliding towards the left post.  This fortunate bounce produces a goal as the ball enters the net after going over the left pad of Coupethwaite.  Following this event, several FREEZER shots get taken from long range as Coupethwaite seems to be fighting the ball and giving up rebounds.  Great intensity and pace to the game as both sides go all-out.  No penalty situation as well as the match is relatively clean with few body contacts in front of either net.  At the 19 minute mark, XY FACTOR ties the game up when a turnover in the FREEZER zone allows Julie Houle [#5] to feed Joe Vigant [#10] who beats Castonovo with a quick shot.  A tie is good enough for XY FACTOR to win the Cup so FREEZER must respond.  The answer is given 3 minutes later when Kate Crosby [#7] fights for and obtains a loose ball along the left wing wall.  She feeds Réal Paquette [#3] at the left point position who fires a hard slapper towards the top right corner.  With Manny Taveroff [#4] providing an excellent screen in front of Coupethwaite, the XY FACTOR is unable to see the incoming shot as it enters the net just underneath the crossbar.  With only 30 seconds to go in the period, XY FACTOR obtain a 2-on-1 situation which sees Louis Paquette [#7] flips a pass over a sprawled FREEZER defender [#3 – that Paquette fellow] onto Joe Vigant’s stick [#10].  Vigant one-times it past Castonovo.  2-2 tie at halftime.

SECOND PERIOD

The halftime speech for FREEZER concerned the continuation of the offensive display and the feeding of the point shooters as Coupethwaite is giving a ton of rebounds.  Defensively, try to keep everything on the outside and let Castonovo smother incoming shots.  The period starts off badly for XY FACTOR as they lose Gary Munro [#13] to an ankle injury when he stepped on Manny Taveroff’s [#3] foot during an offensive rush by FREEZER.  XY FACTOR responds to this loss with lots of energy and lots of heavy forechecking.  Louis Paquette [#7] finds some net behind Castonovo with a precise high wrister at the 1:09 mark.  Then, 2 minutes later, Joe Vigant [#10] obtains his hat-trick on a breakaway when he pulls 4 moves on Castonovo before tucking it away inside the left post.  Beautiful goal !!  Morale is low on the FREEZER bench as they now need 3 goals.  XY FACTOR are now in the driver’s seat.  XY FACTOR is showing no ill effects from Gary Munro’s loss.  Time ticks by and we are approaching the halfway point of the period when FREEZER finally make some noise.  Ina Garabedian [#18] scoops up a loose ball on left wing and feeds Réal Paquette [#3] coming in from the left point.  Paquette fires a quick wrister that beats Coupethwaite stickside inside the left post for his third goal of the game.  39 seconds later, Manny Taveroff [#4] receives a feed from Kate Crosby [#7] in the slot, goes to his backhand and roofs one in the top right corner.  Suddenly, it’s now 4-4 and everything is possible.  Every offensive opportunity for either team now produces great tension and entertainment.  At the 19th minute mark, Kate Crosby [#7] scoops up a loose ball on right wing, she makes a pass towards Lucie Maréchal [#8] at the right point.  Maréchal takes a shot towards the net that is redirected by Marc Forget [#0] as he was located there.  The shot finds the back of the net and FREEZER have erased a 2 goal deficit with 3 unanswered goals.  The pressure is now on XY FACTOR to find an equalizer.  They do so about 2 minutes later when Louis Paquette [#7] finds himself at the left point position and fires a screamer into the top left corner as Castonovo could not do much against this precise shot.  FREEZER pull their goalie in the last minute as they need a goal and come close on two opportunities but are unable to do so when the final whistle gets done.  Congratulations to XY FACTOR for their championship !!!

FREEZER RECAP =  Réal Paquette was in “the zone” as he nails 3 on Coupethwaite.  Kate Crosby sets up 3 goals.  Better offensive game than in GAME 1 with more quality chances.  A few defensive mistakes turn deadly as XY FACTOR are very opportunistic with their chances.

XY FACTOR = Only 24 shots on net but they make the most of their chances with Joe Vigant getting 3 past Castonovo.  Julie Houle plays a strong offensive game with quality passes and obtains 2 helpers.  Not the best game for Coupethwaite but he shuts things down in the final 5 minutes for the Cup win.

SEMI-FINALS

BEST OF TWO GAMES – TOTAL PTS

BOOMERANGS  vs  FREEZER 10

GAME 2

Pietro Porco [#97] missing in the lineup while Donna Ringrose [#0] returns for the BOOMERANGS.  Violaine Vastel [#0] makes her return to the FREEZER lineup. Marc Forget [#00] is unable to attend.  Mike Silvaggio in goal for the BOOMERANGS.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.

FIRST PERIOD

The BOOMERANGS must win GAME 2 to force a 20min extra period.  A tie is good enough for FREEZER to advance to the Finals. They will have to do it though without Pietro Porco [#97] who decided to be elsewhere for this important game.  The BOOMERANGS though receive much needed help as their emerging best player, Donna Ringrose [#0] returns from injury.  The match begins and the BOOMERANGS are very aggressive with their forechecking and keep FREEZER hemmed in defensively.  FREEZER play is all over the map as they are unable to cope with the intensity demonstrated from the BOOMERANGS.  As luck would have it, FREEZER open the scoring at the 6 minute mark when Jean Roy [#11] slams a loose ball behind Silvaggio’s back from a Sylvain Léonard [#22] shot.  The BOOMERANGS answer back with back-to-back offensive shifts and are rewarded when Donna Ringrose [#0] fires a shot over a sprawled Castonovo at the 8 minute mark.  About two minutes later, Ringrose [#0] does it again when she picks up a rebound from a Ragesh Patel [#23] pointshot and beats Castonovo up high.  The BOOMERANGS sense some uneasiness in the play of FREEZER and hammer home a third goal, the third one for Donna Ringrose [#0] when she picks up another rebound from another pointshot by Patel [#23] and fires a short 4 footer beyond Castonovo at the 11 minute mark.  A FREEZER goalie timeout allows the team to calm down and to try and get back some normalcy.  Both teams exchange some chances afterwards but the score remains at 3-1 for BOOMERANGS until Sylvain Léonard [#22] finds the top left corner with a booming slapshot from the left point with 5 minutes to go in the period….

SECOND PERIOD

The speech at the FREEZER bench during halftime was to focus on passing and better defensive coverage on Ringrose and Patel as these two were providing the greater majority of the BOOMERANGS offensive chances.  FREEZER open the second period with better offensive mojo and get rewarded at the 2 minute mark when Réal Paquette [#3] fires a shot through the legs of Silvaggio from the slot after a pass from Jean Roy [#11].  With the 3-1 lead now erased, FREEZER can try to reestablish some ball control.  About 6 minutes later, Lucie Maréchal [#8] intercepts a clearing attempt at the right point position and fires a low shot that is saved by Silvaggio but the rebound that occurs gets picked up by Manny Taveroff [#4] who fires home the ball into an empty net.  At the 12 minute mark, the goal of the game occurs when Donna Ringrose [#0] comes out from the right wing corner, circles to the right “faceoff” circle and fires a precise wrister over the left shoulder of Castonovo who was hugging the right post.  FREEZER answers this a minute later when Sylvain Léonard [#22] fires a low squeaker that, somehow, finds room inside the left post.  With FREEZER now up 5-4 with half a period to go, the team attempts to spend as much time as possible in BOOMERANGS territory.  FREEZER is somewhat successful with this strategy until the 22 minute mark when Ragesh Patel [#23] connects from “downtown” with a booming slapper.  The BOOMERANGS recover hope with the score now at 5-5 and with 3:50 to go in the game.  The clock winds down to the final minute but Silvaggio remains in the BOOMERANGS net.  Several players on the FREEZER bench are wondering why that is so ??  The BOOMERANGS must win the game, a tie is not good, but, inexplicably, Silvaggio remains in goal for the final minute as he sees the BOOMERANGS obtain one good chance to score with about 10 seconds to go. The clock runs out and FREEZER celebrate their entry into the Finals…

FREEZER RECAP =  Sylvain Léonard shows his captaincy skills with a solid 3pt offensive performance.  Jean Roy also obtains 3 pts and leads the FREEZER forwards.  Team play was pretty uneven with little spurts here and there but nothing consistent as efficient forechecking by the BOOMERANGS created lots of problems.

BOOMERANGS RECAP = Donna Ringrose is a one player workforce with an excellent offensive display of 5 pts [4g + 1a].  Ragesh Patel creates numerous scoring opportunities with pinpoint passing and precise slapshots from long range.  The BOOMERANGS deserved a better fate in this GAME 2 but some defensive shortcomings allow FREEZER to eliminate them 1-0-1.

FINALS

BEST OF TWO GAMES – TOTAL PTS

XY FACTOR  vs  FREEZER 10

GAME 1

Lineup of 8 players for XY FACTOR as Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#9] is missing in action.  Lineup of 9 players for FREEZER as Marc Forget [#00] is absent.  Bruce Coupethwaite in goal for XY FACTOR.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.

FIRST PERIOD

The two best teams in the League square off for the Cup.   XY FACTOR get off to a good start as they forecheck tenaciously and obtain several quality scoring chances but get denied by Abby Castonovo who keeps his angles and smothers rebounds.  Meanwhile, Bruce Coupethwaite sees his defence blocking several shots and keeping most shots, when they occur, from the outside as the slot area is regularly cleaned out of FREEZER players.  Great tempo to the game as end to end rushes occur but no finish for either team as passes or shots get blocked.  Both teams fulfill their defensive responsibilities.  Chris Munro [#12] is the most dangerous player so far for XY FACTOR while Jean Roy [#11] imitates him for FREEZER.  It becomes a battle of the goaltenders as the first goal seems elusive to both teams due to the emphasis on tight defence….

SECOND PERIOD

More of the same for the first half of the second period but XY FACTOR are definitely obtaining more scoring chances while FREEZER’s passing and shooting are a little off the mark.  At the 15 minute mark, Louis Paquette [#7] advances along the right wing and fires a pointshot.  The ball squeezes itself between Castonovo and the right post and rolls ever so slowly across the goal line.  The all-important first goal goes to XY FACTOR.  FREEZER demonstrates some character when, 3 minutes later, Jean Roy [#11] fires a snapper from the right wing position into the top left corner in front of a screened Coupethwaite.  Kate Crosby [#7] was providing the visual obstacle.  The intensity notches itself up a level for the last 5 minutes as both teams know that the next goal, if there is one, may prove to be the winner.  With about 4 minutes to go in the game, the ball is sent towards the FREEZER bench.  Chris Munro [#12] and Sylvain Léonard [#22] fight for the ball and Munro wins the physical duel.  As Léonard falls to the floor, Munro scoops up the ball and maneuvers himself towards the slot.  He fires a wrister that beats Castonovo inside the left post.  FREEZER must now redouble their efforts but receive a dubious penalty when Sylvain Léonard gets called for tripping with about 3 minutes to go.  From the FREEZER bench it seemed a clean play but the head referee saw it differently and made the call.  XY FACTOR are unable to mount up an effective powerplay and see FREEZER get two good chances to score but come up empty as Coupethwaite shuts the door.  With about 20 seconds to go, FREEZER are finally able to pull the goalie but nothing comes from it as XY FACTOR kill the clock.  XY FACTOR now have the upper hand….

XY FACTOR RECAP =  Tight defensive play shuts down FREEZER offence.  Few mistakes in the neutral zone limit turnovers.  Chris Munro is a constant threat.  Gary Munro limited in his offensive rushes.

FREEZER RECAP = The team must find it’s legs again in order to generate better offensive chances.  Staying out of the penalty box will help.  Manny Taveroff shadowed and silenced.

BEST OF TWO GAMES – TOTAL PTS

BOOMERANGS  vs  FREEZER 10

GAME 1

A key player missing in the lineup for the BOOMERANGS as Donna Ringrose [#0] is injured.  Her presence for GAME 2 is questionable.  Two players missing in action for FREEZER 10.  They are Violaine Vastel [#0], injured as well and also questionable for GAME 2 and Marc Forget [#00] unable to attend.  Mike Silvaggio in goal for the BOOMERANGS.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.

FIRST PERIOD

In this type of series format, winning the first game is of the utmost importance.  Accomplishing this puts the other team under a lot of pressure as they must win Game 2 in order to force the tenure of an Overtime period.  You find out right away if that team has what it takes to play under pressure.  With 2 weeks off for FREEZER 10, the price or the spoils of finishing amongst the top 2, there could have been some rust in the team play.  The first few shifts dispelled such a notion as good offensive pressure from both sets of forwards [Crosby + Taveroff // Garabedian + Roy] set the tempo with constant forechecking and key passes to the D for pointshots.  The BOOMERANGS castle is thus under siege.  Silvaggio comes up with key saves and keeps the score at 0-0.  Pietro Porco [#97] obtains the best chance to score for his team in this period when he finds himself alone near the right post with the ball rebounding from the back wall.  Fortunately for FREEZER 10, a defender is able to neutralize the stick of Porco and send the ball away.  For every shot the BOOMERANGS would take on Castonovo, Silvaggio would receive 2 from the FREEZER players.  The FREEZER foursomes were doing a good job giving several options to the ball carrier, thus creating numerous quality scoring chances.  Most of the offensive chances for the BOOMERANGS were off Porco rushes or when the tandem of Julie Chenevert [#7] and Esther Latoures [#16] would create havoc near the crease.  Time goes by and you can just feel that whoever would score the first goal would gain a massive momentum swing.  Talk on the FREEZER bench was all about scoring that first goal because Silvaggio was doing a fine job stopping everything and there was no wish to see the BOOMERANGS get a confidence boost with a goal.  The FREEZER wishes get answered when Ina Garabedian [#18] picks up a loose ball near the right post, after a shot from Manny Taveroff [#4] and an initial pass from Sylvain Léonard [#22], sees that Silvaggio is down and trying to cover everything down low.  Garabedian coolly backs away a few feet and fires a wrister into the top left corner at the 23:51 mark.  First blood has been drawn…

SECOND PERIOD

The half-time speech at the FREEZER bench was to be concerned with Patel’s pointshots, quite silent in the first period, and a stronger presence in the offensive zone by the BOOMERANGS defenders.  The first shift of the period is successful for FREEZER when Manny Taveroff [#4] receives a pass from Ina Garabedian [#18] on the left wing and fires a shot that beats Silvaggio inside the left post.  The minutes then go by with FREEZER continuing their bombardment on Silvaggio.  If the BOOMERANGS had a plan involving Ragesh Patel [#23], it was definitely being stymied as his booming pointshot was nowhere to be seen due to effective defensive coverage from FREEZER players.  The absence of Ringrose can now be seen hurting the other 3 women players as tired legs now become an inevitable factor in the offensive and defensive aspects of the game.  With Silvaggio staying deep in his net in order to cover everything down low, the high corners now become prime targets and Manny Taveroff [#4] scores his second and third goal of the match within 94 seconds on high wristers at the 7:25 and 8:59 mark with helpers going to Ina Garabedian [#18] and Anne-Marie Parent [#12].  With a 4-0 lead and 17 minutes to go in the game, FREEZER now feels confident but continues to harass the enemy net as the BOOMERANGS are definitely having defensive problems.  Jean Roy [#11] scores a fifth goal for FREEZER when he completes a play from Ina Garabedian [#18].  A nice move towards the slot and a quick shot between the legs of Silvaggio.  The BOOMERANGS then obtain a powerplay but are unable to beat Castonovo as he comes up with saves from a variety of angles.  Not one shot though from the point.  Everything downlow, especially for Julie Chenevert [#7] who had two successive chances of stuffing the ball but Castonovo’s pads would deny her.  Time moves on and we are down to the final two minutes when Jean Roy [#11] scores his second goal of the match on a sweeping advance along the right wing, then cutting in towards the middle and, after a brief scuffle, firing a shot into the back of the net.  Manny Taveroff [#4] surprises Silvaggio with a low shot just inside the left post with only 30 seconds left in the game to nab his 4th tally of the match…

BOOMERANGS RECAP =  They have to get Ragesh Patel more involved offensively.  The return of Donna Ringrose is definitely needed.  Better defensive play and coverage are required as well after allowing 59 shots to FREEZER.

FREEZER RECAP = Excellent offensive performances from Taveroff and Garabedian.  Solid overall play from both foursomes on both sides of the ball.  32 shots on Castonovo with no more than 10 deemed dangerous for his playoff shutout.

Very dangerous 1-2 punch with Crosby and Garabedian for Freezer 10.  Unmatched on any other roster except for Boomerangs as Ringrose is definitely emerging as a star player.  Give the edge to Taveroff over Porco.  Roy has 15 goals in only 16 GP.

EDGE = FREEZER 10

Dangerous 1-2 punch with Léonard and Paquette offensively for Freezer as Parent, Maréchal and Vastel cover defensively when called upon.  Big booming shot from Patel keeps opposing goaltenders sharp.  Timely pinches from Latoures and Doganieri brings support to the Boomerangs forwards.

GOALTENDING

BOOMERANGS = MIKE SILVAGGIO [ 7-11-2 // 4.75 GAA // .851 SP // 32 S/G ]

S/G = SHOTS AGAINST PER GAME

EDGE = FREEZER 10

Best G.A.A. in the League for Castonovo.  Takes away a lot of room when squared to the shooter.  On his game when he comes out to cut the angle down.  Silvaggio usually plays Freezer games with lots of guts as he comes up with spectacular saves time and time again.  He shall have to do so here if he wants his team to have a good chance.

Because of the presence of Vigant as Munro and Luedee match up.  Efficient passer in the presence of Dutil who provides timely pinches.  Luedee will have to increase his shot accuracy to tilt things in the Express’ favor.  Gary Munro’s long reach makes it tough to get around him and his blast from the point is very accurate.

Pietrantonio picks up juicy rebounds from point shots and scores his majority of goals from within 5 feet of the net.  Tourneur has a “hot” hand of late with 3 goals in her last 3 games.  If the TIGERS cannot have Doyon and/or Thibault on the playoff roster then there won’t be much threat from their forwards from the outside perimeter as Lehuu and Bedassy are more proficient closer to the net.

If D’Agostino is unable to get back in the lineup and if Nadeau makes it.  Callaghan is very dangerous on the rush while Patel can blast it from “downtown” with accuracy.  Nadeau also has a very dangerous shot, dangerous for players standing in front of the net when he’s off. J  Watch out for Latoures and her offensive pinching tendencies.

FREEZER 10 [13-5-3]  vs  BOOMERANGS [8-10-3]

Three players missing in action for FREEZER 10.  They are Ina Garabedian [#18], Violaine Vastel [#0] and Jean Roy [#11].  Marc Forget [#00] subs in.  One player missing for BOOMERANGS.  Ragesh Patel [#23].  He is replaced by Vinh Nguyen [#9].   FREEZER 10 leads the Season series 3-1-0 with a 22-17 lead in goals.  FREEZER 10 are 4-1-0 in their last 5 games while BOOMERANGS are 2-2-1 .  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.  Mike Silvaggio in goal for BOOMERANGS.

FIRST PERIOD

With the Regular Season Championship wrapped up due to a tie by XY FACTOR against the MANIACS, FREEZER 10 could simply focus on enjoying the game and making sure not to take unnecessary risks for injuries.  The absence of a big point shot for BOOMERANGS, a.k.a. Ragesh Patel, meant constant attempts to force the play down low.  Donna Ringrose [#0] and Vinh Nguyen [#9] applied constant forechecking but could not enjoy much success due to the diligence and effectiveness of the FREEZER defenders.  Most of the play in the early going is kept to the outside as several passing attempts get intercepted or shots miss the net.  FREEZER obtains 2 breakaways in the first 5 minutes but Silvaggio comes up big and stops them.  At the 5:02 mark of the period, Manny Taveroff [#4] finds himself alone in the crease with a sprawled goalie and a loose ball.  One of his easiest goals of the season.  FREEZER defenders do a good job on Pietro Porco [#97] and nullify his offensive attempts.  At the 16:28 mark, Manny Taveroff [#4] scores his second goal of the game with a nice snapper inside the left post from the right wing position.  A good defensive play by Anne-Marie Parent [#12] and a forward pass from her to Taveroff sets up the shot.  Tight checking continues as neither team is able to breakout offensively.  A quiet period for Castonovo.  Shots for the period are 16-10 in favor of FREEZER.

SECOND PERIOD

The early part of the second period is a direct continuation of the first, meaning few quality scoring chances, when they do occur, the shots either miss the net or the goalie makes the save and gives up no rebounds.  Very few rebounds in this game as both goalies control this aspect of their game very well.  BOOMERANGS run into penalty problems as they get called on 2 too-many-players penalties within a timespan of 40 seconds.  Manny Taveroff [#4] completes his hat-trick during the 4-on-2 when he accepts a pass from Sylvain Léonard and beats Silvaggio from the right wing position.  His 40th goal of the season.  The BOOMERANGS finally get rewarded with a goal at the 15:12 mark when Esther Latoures [#16], left alone near the right post, redirects a pass from Donna Ringrose [#0] who was near the left wing wall.  Nice bang-bang goal.  Slight increase afterwards from BOOMERANGS in offensive play but, once again, a penalty ruins it for them when Pietro Porco [#97] gets called for a “body contact” penalty on Lucie Maréchal [#8]. Maréchal sets up Manny Taveroff’s [#4] fourth goal of the match with a pass from the left point position.  Taveroff snaps it home high left side from the right wing.  The BOOMERANGS make things interesting when Esther Latoures [#16] obtains her second goal of the game with another pass from Donna Ringrose [#0] with 4:37 to go in the game.  Kate Crosby [#7] takes away any chance of a BOOMERANGS comeback when she scores from the left wing wall, a low shot that finds it’s way through a maze of legs and into the net near the far right post.  Her League leading 14th goal of the season.

FREEZER RECAP =  Manny Taveroff confirms his Best Male Player award with 4 goals.   Once again, solid defense in front of Castonovo limits quality scoring chances.  The Regular Season Champs can now rest for 2 weeks and heal.

BOOMERANGS RECAP = The absence of Ragesh Patel could not be overcome in this game.  Effective combo of Latoures and Ringrose provides good scoring chances.  The Boomerangs will now face the Maniacs in the opening round of the Playoffs.

MANIACS [4-9-6]  vs  FREEZER 10 [12-5-3]

Full lineup for the MANIACS.  Full lineup for FREEZER 10.   FREEZER 10 leads the Season series 1-0-2 with a 14-10 lead in goals.  The MANIACS are 1-1-3 in their last 5 games while FREEZER 10 are 3-1-1 .   Matthew Barlow in goal for the MANIACS.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.

FIRST PERIOD

From the beginning of the match, the gym floor was definitely tilted towards the MANIACS’ end as a flurry of shots peppers Barlow.  The MANIACS spend way too much time in their own zone as FREEZER have unlimited access to the offensive zone.  The MANIACS have plenty of problems with the offensive duo of Ina Garabedian [#18] and Manny Taveroff [#4] as they generate numerous quality offensive chances.  For every 3 shots FREEZER obtains on Barlow, the MANIACS get one on Castonovo.  FREEZER open the scoring when Réal Paquette [#3] feeds Ina Garabedian [#18] who then proceeds to move on Barlow along the left side and beats him with a precise wrister in the left corner.  Only 10 seconds later, Manny Taveroff [#4] fires his own “blue line”, the rolling shot finds the opening between Barlow’s pads and enters the net.  Jennifer Jones-Patulli [#8] reduces the lead to 2-1 when she jumps on a rebound and beats Castonovo.  As dominating offensively as FREEZER are, Matthew Barlow is the only reason the score remains close as save after save after save after save get registered by the netminder.  With just over a minute to go in the period, Manny Taveroff [#4] scores his second goal of the game off an Ina Garabedian [#18] feed near the crease.  3-1 FREEZER at the end of the first period.

SECOND PERIOD

The MANIACS gain some momentum early in the period when Greg Phendler winds up with a slapper from “Downtown” which surprises Castonovo and beats him on the left side.  The MANIACS hang in tough.  Ina Garabedian [#18] carries the play with numerous incursions in the offensive zone and is set up often with passes from the D and from Taveroff.  FREEZER regain their 2 goal lead when the Paquette-Garabedian combo strike again with a similar play.   Mike Callaghan [#41] and Chris Nadeau [#16] are closely watched throughout the game but Callaghan finally finds some free room at the left point and fires a high backhand that finds the top left corner to bring the MANIACS back to within one.  Barlow continues his efficient goaltending as the shot count is nearing 50 with around 6 minutes to go.  With around 4:25 to go in the game, Lucie Maréchal [#8] thwarts an offensive rush by the MANIACS, a loose ball situation arises and Ina Garabedian [#18] grabs control and advances.  She finds Manny Taveroff [#4] near the crease who beats Barlow with a short wrister.  The twosome switch roles about 80 seconds later and Ina Garabedian [#18] obtains her third goal of the match, matching her linemate’s goal production.  Sylvain Léonard [#22] finishes the scoring with a wrister into the top left corner from a feed by Kate Crosby [#7].

MANIACS RECAP =  Don’t let the 7 goals fool you, Matthew Barlow played an outstanding game with 51 saves.  The MANIACS D took the night off.  Régent “THE GOON” Proulx should learn to stay quiet between periods. J

FREEZER 10 RECAP = Best game of the season for Ina Garabedian.  She finishes with a 5 pt effort [3 G + 2A].  Her linemate [Manny Taveroff] was not too bad as well with a 4 pt effort [3G + 1A].  An offensive team record 58 shots.  Good team defensive effort limits MANIACS to only 21 shots.

FREEZER 10 [11-5-3]  vs  XYFACTOR [10-5-3]

Jean Roy [#11] is missing for FREEZER 10.  Marc Forget [#11] replaces him. Violaine Vastel [#0] has become part of the regular lineup and participates in her 6th game of the season.  Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#9] and Noémie Dutil [#25] are not in the lineup.  Laura Barile [#15] and Danielle Rousseau [#12] are added to the roster.  XYFACTOR 10 leads the Season series 3-1-0 with a 15-10 lead in goals.  FREEZER 10 are 3-1-1 in their last 5 games while XYFACTOR are 2-2-1 .   Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.  Bruce Coupethwaite in goal for XYFACTOR.

FIRST PERIOD

A strong possibility that these two teams will meet in the playoffs.  Top spot in the Regular Season is up for grabs as only two points separate these two teams.  FREEZER possessing the 2pt lead but with XYFACTOR having a game in hand.  Typical playoff-like atmosphere and intensity as both sides carry the play towards the offensive zone but encounter effective defensive schemes to limit offensive chances.  A stick, a leg, a body part, anything that can be used to block a shot is taken to prevent quality scoring chances.  This adds more pressure on the goaltenders as they must come up with big saves and retain their focus throughout the game.  Chris Munro [#6] from XYFACTOR opens the scoring at the 14 minute mark when he is able to jump on a loose rebound and buries a shot in the top section of the net.  Word is passed along the FREEZER bench to redouble efforts and to get shots on Coupethwaite as several rebounds occur on long shots.  Continued efficiency in defensive play limits both teams to minimum scoring chances for the remainder of the period.  With FREEZER killing off a late penalty, Kate Crosby [#7] recuperates a loose ball behind the XYFACTOR net and spots Sylvain Léonard [#22] lurking alone in the slot.  Crosby makes a perfect pass and Léonard one-times it inside the left post before Coupethwaite can move across and deny the opening.  Important goal for FREEZER as the period ends and momentum is captured.  Shots favor XYFACTOR 15-13.

SECOND PERIOD

The FREEZER squad is pumped up by this goal and start creating turnovers in the neutral zone with efficient stickwork.  Manny Taveroff [#4] stops a forward rush by Chris Munro and the ball ricochets onto Réal Paquette’s stick.  Paquette [#3] takes a few steps forward and fires a snapper that beats Coupethwaite blocker side in the top left corner.  With Coupethwaite’s glovehand being so good, blocker side is the way to go when you have the time to take a good shot.  Play continues and both sides continue having difficulties maintaining control in the offensive zone as both teams are playing solid D.  At the 12 minute mark, Chris Munro [#6] sends Louis Paquette [#7] on a semi-breakaway.  Louis Paquette goes right, forces Castonovo to open the legs as the goalie is sliding across, and fires a shot in the opening.  The ball squeezes itself between the legs of the FREEZER goalie and ends up rolling into the net.  Great tension from this moment as both sides realize the next goal, if there is one, may prove to be the winner.  With about 6 minutes to go in the game, FREEZER creates another turnover at the “central line” when Ina Garabedian [#18] stops an offensive rush and directs a short pass towards Réal Paquette [#3].  Paquette crosses the “red-line” and fires a hard snapper that beats Coupethwaite underneath the crossbar blocker side.  About 2 minutes later, Manny Taveroff [#4] receives a pass from Ina Garabedian [#18] and fires a low shot towards the left post.  A clear “ping” is heard and play gets stopped.  The referee points to the net indicating a goal but the XYFACTOR bench is contesting the decision.  The referee consults with the timekeeper and maintains his decision that the ball entered the net.  XYFACTOR are still upset with the call when FREEZER score a third goal within a 2 minute timespan.  Kate Crosby [#7] and Sylvain Léonard [#22] team up again with the latter firing a high slapshot that hits Gary Munro [#4] in the head.  The ball ricochets into the FACTOR net.  Lucky goal but it still counts.  With time running out, Chris Munro [#6] reduces the FREEZER lead back to two goals when he unloads a heavy slapper top left corner from 15 feet with just under 2 minutes to go.  FREEZER kill the clock with ball control in the final minute and Anne-Marie Parent scores her first goal in the Tuesday League when she picks up a loose ball in the left wing corner and fires a shot towards the net.  The ball finds the back of the net and a “Folies Bergères” celebration is underway by the goalscorer !!!!  Shots are 14-14 for this period.

FREEZER RECAP =  Another strong second period for FREEZER as they score 5 times on 14 shots.  5 goals from the D-crew.  Lucie Maréchal is now next in line for her first goal.  Strong two-way play leads the way.

XYFACTOR RECAP = Chris Munro all over the gym floor as he was the most dangerous player for his team.  Bruce Coupethwaite gets beaten 4 times on his blocker-stick side.  Too many turnovers in the neutral zone.

EXPRESS [10-5-2]  vs  FREEZER 10 [9-5-3]

Full lineup for the EXPRESS.  FREEZER 10 for the first time this year aligns 10 players as Marc Forget [#07] and Violaine Vastel [#0] add their presence to the regular eight.  FREEZER 10 leads the Season series 2-0-1 with a 15-7 lead in goals.  The EXPRESS are 4-0-1 in their last 5 games while FREEZER 10 are 2-2-1 .   Sylvain Loyer in goal for the EXPRESS.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.

FIRST PERIOD

A possible playoff preview as these two teams usually end up on opposite sides for the Semis or for the Big Enchilada.  FREEZER get off to a great start as efficient forechecking and numerous offensive pinches from the D create long ball control situations in the offensive zone.  The gym floor is definitely tilted towards the EXPRESS end.  Manny Taveroff [#4] obtains numerous scoring chances but is unable to find the back of the net.  Ina Garabedian [#18] opens the scoring on a breakaway when she finds an opening between the legs of Loyer with a wrist shot.  Jean Roy [#11] doubles the lead for FREEZER when a laser-guided shot finds the top left corner from the right side.  Réal Paquette [#3] increases the lead to 3-0 for FREEZER when a wrister taken from the point finds the top left corner on Loyer.  FREEZER is in full control while EXPRESS are trying to find their legs.  Shots after the end of the period are 32-12 in favor of FREEZER.

SECOND PERIOD

Same hot start for FREEZER at the beginning of this period as offensive pressure keeps EXPRESS bottled up.  Kate Crosby [#7] redirects a pass from Manny Taveroff [#4] and scores her 12th goal of the season to lead all women goalscorers.  The EXPRESS start to get more aggressive physically and pinch more offensively with their D as the game is getting out of reach.  This renewed effort pays off when Anne-Sophie Lavoie [#53] scores a nice goal from the slot with a high wrist shot into the top right corner on Castonovo.  FREEZER reclaims their four goal lead when Manny Taveroff [#4] obtains his 30th of the season on a backhand into the top right corner.  FREEZER is up 6-1 with time running out when Diana Tourneur [#27] scores twice within a 55 second timespan for the EXPRESS.  One goal on a stuffer just inside the right post and the other on a screen shot from the slot.

EXPRESS RECAP = The EXPRESS receive a severe wake-up call.  52 shots allowed and a deficient offensive game.   Tony Ricciardi needs to find his game as he was a non factor.  Diana Tourneur scores her first two goals of the season.  Sylvain Loyer was exhausted by game’s end.

FREEZER RECAP = Gearing up for the playoffs with a strong performance against the team’s nemesis.  32 shots in the first period is the second best performance after the 37 shots taken against TIGERS earlier in the season.  Abby Castonovo is in a “good zone” with key saves and rebound control.

FREEZER 10 [10-5-3] vs BOOMERANGS [7-9-2]

Once again, a lineup of 10 players for FREEZER as Marc Forget [#07] and Violaine Vastel [#0] remain in the lineup.  BOOMERANGS have one player missing in action as Angelo D’Agostino [#19] is not in the lineup.  FREEZER 10 lead the Season series 2-1-0 with a 15-15 tie in goals.  FREEZER 10 are 3-1-1 in their last 5 while BOOMERANGS are 1-4-0.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.  Mike Silvaggio in goal for BOOMERANGS.

FIRST PERIOD

Pietro Porco [#97] opens the scoring at the 0:05 mark with a blistering slapshot into the top left corner.  Julie Chenevert [#7] wins the opening faceoff, directs a pass towards Porco who unloads.  The BOOMERANGS try to expand their lead with several more offensive forays but Abby Castonovo shuts the door and waits for his team to wake up.  It will take about half a period for FREEZER to find their game and harass the net of Silvaggio.  Ragesh Patel [#23] receives special attention as soon as he touches the ball.  Preventing him from shooting is the mission for every FREEZER forward near his area.  Strong offensive play from Donna Ringrose [#9] provides the best offensive opportunities for BOOMERANGS in this period.  A memorable elbow shove on Manny Taveroff [#4] provides lots of chuckles on the FREEZER bench when Ringrose wins the battle for the ball and heads towards Castonovo’s net.  Donna Ringrose plays with a lot of confidence and gusto.  The score remains 1-0 for BOOMERANGS until the 25:56 mark when Kate Crosby [#7] squeezes a wrister inside the left post.

SECOND PERIOD

FREEZER find their legs early in the second period and take control of the game as they score 4 goals in the first 11 minutes.  Manny Taveroff [#4] stuffs one in at the 2:23 mark.  Then Marc Forget [#07] scores a natural hat-trick with wristers against a BOOMERANGS goaltender under intense pressure.  As well as the BOOMERANGS were able to establish some offensive pressure but with few shots taken in the first period, they were now unable to mount anything worthwhile in this second period as FREEZER were spending most of their time in the offensive zone.  Sylvain Léonard [#22] and Manny Taveroff [#4] team up twice within a 15 second timespan to increase FREEZER’s lead to 7-1 with Léonard feeding Taveroff at the right point and Taveroff letting off two precise snappers inside the right post.  Esther Latoures [#16] completes the scoring for BOOMERANGS with a shot from the slot.  6 goals in the second period for FREEZER.

BOOMERANGS RECAP = Very good first period with determined offensive forays but not enough shots on net though.  Sluggish second period as whirlwind FREEZER offensive plays provides headaches to the defence.  Mike Silvaggio comes up with big saves but can’t do it all by himself.  Ragesh Patel held silent and scoreless.

FREEZER RECAP = Marc Forget and Manny Taveroff each obtain a hat-trick.  Abby Castonovo displays solid goaltending after the first shot taken against him to keep his team in the game.  Strong defensive performance with only 18 shots against even though outplayed in the first period.

It's doubleheader time!!

Enfin, HARD WORK PAYS!!

Boomerangs 4 vs Bengal Tigers 1

FREEZER 10 [9-4-3]  vs  XY FACTOR [8-5-2]

FREEZER 10 is missing one player in Ina Garabedian [#18].  Violaine Vastel [#0] replaces her.  Mylan Lehuu [#00] helps out as well.  Lucie Maréchal [#8] returns to the lineup but is not at 100% which means that she plays an occasional shift.  Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#9] is missing in action for XY FACTOR.  XY FACTOR leads the Season series 2-1-0 with a 12-8 lead in goals.  FREEZER 10 are 3-1-1 in their last 5 games while XY FACTOR are 1-2-2 .   Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.  Bruce Coupethwaite in goal for XY FACTOR.

FIRST PERIOD

The opening minute starts off with a bang as FACTOR draw first blood.  A combination of poor defensive coverage from the author of this article [#3] and a see-thru pass from Kim Germain [#11]  feeds Joe Vigant [#10] left all alone in the slot.  He redirects the pass beyond Castonovo at the 0:38 mark.  9 seconds later, FREEZER ties up the score when Jean Roy [#11] wins the faceoff, advances a few feet and fires a high shot that deflects off a FACTOR defender and into the net as Coupethwaite could do nothing on the redirection.  An intense “playoff-like” atmosphere describes the play of both teams.  FACTOR’s male players all have excellent ball handling skills and use it to create better scoring opportunities for themselves and their female teammates.  Both FACTOR women forwards know where to go in the offensive zone when they don’t have the ball.  FREEZER counters with lots of pinching in from their D and the ability to find open players in the crease or just to the side.  Louis Paquette [#7] completes a superb display of ball control skills by Chris Munro [#6] and beats Castonovo on the right side to give FACTOR a 2-1 lead at the 9:32 mark.  FREEZER are not helping themselves by shooting high, by shooting wide or by shooting directly on Coupethwaite’s chest.  On their third powerplay of the period, FREEZER ties up the score when Sylvain Léonard [#22] fires a low shot through a screen just inside the left post.

SECOND PERIOD

Definitely a playoff period during the second half of this game as both sides find quality scoring chances at a minimum.  When they do occur, both goalies come with the necessary “big” saves.  Coupethwaite with a “hot” glove, ask Taveroff about it !!  Castonovo with sound positioning taking away most of the net.  FACTOR goes ahead 3-2 on a bad bench change by FREEZER at the 17:05 mark.  Thinking that a clearing attempt was going to reach the FACTOR bench area, a FREEZER defender starts heading towards the FREEZER bench.  Unbeknowst to the player, the clearing attempt got intercepted at the “redline”.  Suddenly, FREEZER find themselves shorthanded a player for about 10 seconds as the player was caught between going back or to continue towards the bench.  It is enough time for Gary Munro [#13] to feed Chris Munro [#6] in the slot area who then proceeds with an easy shot into the open right side of the net as Castonovo was playing the shooter.  Mistakes like these in the playoffs cannot occur.  FREEZER try to tie up the score for a third time but are unable to beat Coupethwaite.

FREEZER RECAP = Lots of shots but no finish.  Quality defensive play once again by Anne-Marie Parent.  Shooting lessons are now required for several players, especially #3, as the back wall is showing too many impact craters.

FACTOR RECAP = Once again, a “hot” glove hand bails out Coupethwaite.  What happens though when it’s cold ??  Does he have enough skills elsewhere to compensate if ever ??

MANIACS [3-8-3]  vs  FREEZER 10 [9-4-2]

The MANIACS have two players missing in action, Jennifer Jones-Patulli [#8] and Chris Nadeau [#16].  Nicole Forsythe [#13] replaces Jennifer. FREEZER 10 have one player missing in action as Lucie Maréchal [#8] will be out of the lineup for possibly 4 more weeks.  Marie-Josée Blanchet [#0] replaces Lucie.  FREEZER 10 leads the Season series 1-0-1 with an 11-6 lead in goals.  The MANIACS are 1-3-1 in their last 5 games while FREEZER 10 are 4-1-0 .  Matthew Barlow in goal for the MANIACS.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.

FIRST PERIOD

For some reason, the MANIACS always play FREEZER 10 tough.  Not much room to maneuver, continual harassment of the ball carrier are the trademarks of this MANIACS team and this style of play is anathema to the free flowing open style of FREEZER.  Quality chances to score become minimal.  Shots mostly come from the outside with few of them actually taking place in the slot area.  This represents pretty much the play of the first half of the period.  FREEZER though is outshooting MANIACS by a two-to-one margin.  The first goal of the game is scored by Réal Paquette [#3] for FREEZER.  Pinching in on right wing, Paquette grabs a loose ball along the far wall near the MANIACS bench, fights through two stick checks, goes behind the net and emerges near the left post.  He fires the ball towards the slot area where Ina Garabedian [#18] is fighting for position.  Garabedian receives the pass and takes a shot on net.  Barlow makes the save but gives up a rebound to his right near the left post area.  Paquette scoops up the ball and fires a wrister over a fallen Barlow into the net.  Mike Callaghan [#41] produces the equalizer when, after a short pass from Régent Proulx [#33],he utilizes his long reach and deceptive moves to leave two FREEZER defenders wondering “how did he do that??”, Callaghan then proceeds to fire a shot through a maze of players and just over the left glovehand of Castonovo near the right post.  FREEZER are outshooting the MANIACS but they are not dominating as quality scoring chances are pretty much even.

SECOND PERIOD

Greg Phendler [#7] stuns Abby Castonovo when a rolling slapshot from well out finds the back of the net on the left side.  A soft goal that Castonovo would surely like to get back.  The MANIACS get pumped up and carry the play for the next 6 to 7 minutes.  FREEZER players seem unable to generate any speed and are reacting more than they are provoking at this time.  During a positive shift from the offensive duo of Jean Roy [#11] and Ina Garabedian [#18], FREEZER receives an opportunity to set up a quality scoring chance.  Réal Paquette sees a wide open slot area and advances towards it thinking that Roy, who has the ball at this time, will come out from behind the net area and feed him a pass.  Expecting and thinking such a play, Paquette moves deeper into the slot only to see Roy lob the ball over his head from behind the MANIACS net.  Fubar.  This gives Régent Proulx [#33] a clear breakaway and he scores to put the MANIACS up by 2 goals.  There is still about 20 minutes to go in the game but the MANIACS are in full control.  But a lucky break changes the momentum.  About two minutes later, Sylvain Léonard [#22] is near his own bench when he receives a pass from Anne-Marie Parent [#12] his defense partner, Léonard simply fires towards the MANIACS net.  The ball is hopping like crazy as it travels towards Barlow.  The MANIACS’ goaltender makes the fatal mistake of not placing his body in front of the incoming hopper but only his goalie stick.  Barlow misses the ball and FREEZER gets a lucky goal.  Definitely one that Barlow would like to take back.  This wakes up FREEZER who now go back on offense.  About three minutes later, Ina Garabedian [#18] emerges from the left wing corner with the ball, fights off a stick check and heads towards the back of the net.  Once there, she feeds a pass to Réal Paquette [#3] who had moved in and was not positioned at the left post.  It takes Paquette three whacks to finally get the ball to go by Barlow and into the back of the net.  FREEZER are back in the game.  Chances to score become minimal again during the second half of the period as both sides are more aware of their defence.  With 45 seconds to go in the game, the MANIACS receive a powerplay opportunity when Mike Callaghan [#41] gets tripped up by Réal Paquette [#3].  The MANIACS are unable to register one shot on net during those last 45 seconds as the 3 FREEZER penalty killers continually harass the ball carrier and force either poor passing or loss of possession situations.

MANIACS RECAP = Another “What if ??” for the MANIACS as they are unable to hold on to a 2 goal lead.  36 shots allowed but only about half of them can be deemed dangerous.  Régent Proulx continues his fine season with a 2 pt performance.

FREEZER RECAP = No jump no speed for too many shifts.  Mike Callaghan obtains 3 quality scoring chances and converts one as the FREEZER D contains the “big man”.  The FREEZER D-MEN, a cheaper version of the X-MEN, take care of all the goals for this one.

FREEZER 10 [7-4-2]  vs  TIGERS [3-8-2]

FREEZER 10 comes back from the Holiday break with changes in the lineup.  Manny Taveroff [#4] misses this game because of a 1 game suspension.  Lucie Maréchal [#9] and Anne-Marie Parent [#12] are missing in action because of injuries.  To replace them, Marc Forget [#1], Marie-Josée Blanchet [#0] and Violaine Vastel [#4].  For the TIGERS, Davet Thibeault is not in the lineup.  FREEZER 10 leads the Season series 2-1-0 with 25 goals scored vs 9 goals against.  FREEZER 10 are 4-1-0 in their last 5 while the TIGERS are 3-0-2.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.   Carlos Da Costa in goal for the TIGERS.

FREEZER RECAP = Jean Roy scores three goals including the game winner with a precise snapper in the top right corner.  Ina Garabedian returns with a 3pt production.  The FREEZER defence does a good job on Mario Lamontagne but fails against Van Thy Nguyen.  Marie-Josée Blanchet scores her first goal of the season with a nice wrister high in the top right corner.

TIGERS RECAP = Van Thy Nguyen is the one-man show as he scores 4 goals.  Two from point shots and two from in-close.  Carlos Da Costa comes up with several side-to-side saves on Ina Garabedian and Jean Roy.  Defensive zone coverages need to be worked on as 46 shots are allowed against Da Costa.

FREEZER 10 [8-4-2] vs BOOMERANGS [6-6-2]

FREEZER RECAP = Manny Taveroff squeezes a low shot with 0:25 to go between the pads of Silvaggio to give FREEZER the win.  A 4 pt production for Mr.Taveroff.  Marie-Josée Blanchet enjoys a good game playing with Manny Taveroff and obtains 1 goal + 1 assist.  The FREEZER defence went AWOL during the final 7 minutes of the first period.  Something not to be repeated in future games.

BOOMERANGS RECAP = Donna Ringrose provided plenty of offensive mo-jo and finishes with 4 pts.  Angelo D’Agostino pinches in on several offensive rushes and gets rewarded with 2 goals.  Mike Silvaggio makes a fantastic left-post-to-right-post save on Jean Roy to keep the game tied at 4-4.  Several FREEZER players were shaking their heads on that one.

TIGERS [2-8-2]  vs  FREEZER 10 [7-3-2]

Tuesday December 5 2006

Full lineup for the new look TIGERS.  Ina Garabedian [#18] missing in action for FREEZER 10.  FREEZER 10 leads the Season series 2-0-0 with 20 goals scored vs 2 goals against.  The TIGERS are 2-1-2 in their last 5 while FREEZER 10 are 4-0-1.  Carlos Da Costa in goal for the TIGERS.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.

First Period

The first thing you notice with the new look TIGERS are their improvement with their team speed.  As well, their forechecking is much improved.  The additions of Van Thy Nguyen [#7] and Davet Thibeault [#11] has totally changed this team.  Mario Lamontagne [#6] now has an outlet for his passing skills in Thibeault.  The addition of Mylan Lehuu [#13] with Thibeault up front creates a good first line for the TIGERS as Lehuu specializes in crease opportunities.  The match begins and the TIGERS carry the play into the FREEZER zone with good forechecking.  Abby Castonovo is called upon to make numerous saves as defensive miscues start piling up for FREEZER.  A blast from the right point by Van Thy Nguyen [#7] opens the scoring at the 8 minute mark.  FREEZER responds with 2 goals within 57 seconds when Manny Taveroff [#4] and Réal Paquette [#3] beat Da Costa up high.  Teams exchange 2 goals apiece for the remainder of the period but, the TIGERS are establishing a stronger forecheck and, more and more, FREEZER are not able to keep up the pace.

Second Period

The TIGERS begin the second as they have finished the first with constant down low pressure exercised by Thibeault and Lehuu.  Castonovo is seeing shots coming in from everywhere as the TIGERS overload the offensive zone.  Mario Lamontagne imposes his presence when he starts hooking up with Davet Thibeault on numerous scoring opportunities.  FREEZER are unable to match the TIGERS’ energetic play and pay the price when crease goals start piling in for the TIGERS.  Two TIGERS crease goals appeared suspect but the lone referee working the game awarded them.  This did not help the frame of mind of certain FREEZER players who started taking out their frustration onto the lone referee.  For the TIGERS, this was perfect, a solid offensive push to go along with an opponent who was more concerned with the non-calls of the referee.  The TIGERS receive full credit for their play as they outscore FREEZER 4-1 in the second.

TIGERS RECAP = Much improved offense.  Much improved forechecking.  Defensive miscues still a problem.  4 second period goals for Davet Thibeault.  This team is not a walkover anymore.

FREEZER RECAP = Good start followed by inconsistent play.  Inability to match the intensity of the TIGERS in the second period.  Manny Taveroff obtains power forward stats by scoring a hat trick and receiving lots of penalty minutes.

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette

FREEZER 10 [6-3-2]  vs  EXPRESS [6-4-1]

Tuesday November 28 2006

Full lineup for FREEZER 10.  Sherry Page missing in action for the EXPRESS.  FREEZER 10 leads the Season series 1-0-1 with 9 goals scored vs 6 goals against.  FREEZER 10 are 4-0-1 in their last 5 while the EXPRESS are 1-3-1.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.  Martin Champagne in goal for the EXPRESS.

First Period

Always a tight nailbiting matchup between these two teams.  FREEZER strike first when Jean Roy [#11] completes a play initiated by Ina Garabedian [#18] at the 3 minute mark.  The EXPRESS are having a hard time creating offensive chances as Leonard Luedee [#24], Lino Pietrantonio [#15] and Tony Ricciardi [#11] are pretty much shutdown as FREEZER double team these players whenever an opportunity arises.  Luedee especially receives this treatment which takes away his heavy point shot and his passing creativity.  The FREEZER forward duo of Roy and Garabedian obtain a lot of success by controlling the play deep in the offensive zone.  Effective defensive play by the FREEZER defense, especially Anne-Marie Parent [#12] and Sylvain Léonard [#22] with their constant pokechecks and positional play cuts down numerous offensive rushes from the EXPRESS.  With about 10 minutes to go in the period, Ina Garabedian [#18] picks up a loose ball at the “red line” along the right wing wall.  She does an inside-outside deke on one EXPRESS forward, then she does an outside-inside deke on an EXPRESS defender to allow her to come near the EXPRESS net.  Garabedian then fakes a shot and does a cross-crease maneuver to put the ball on her forehand when she goes from the right post to the left post.  Once there, she fires the ball over a sprawled goalie into the net.  Bellissimo !!  Abby Castonovo is not severely tested as EXPRESS quality scoring chances are few in number but does come up with key saves to keep FREEZER ahead by two.  The EXPRESS finally put one on the scoreboard when a new addition for the team, [her name does not appear on the stat sheet but she wears #29] is able to direct a pass towards Lino Pietrantonio [#15] in the crease.  Pietrantonio makes two moves, floors Castonovo and buries it.  Quality scoring chances in this period are about 8 for FREEZER and 3 for EXPRESS.

Second Period

Tight checking resumes in the first 9 minutes of the period.  FREEZER continues to enjoy good ball control pressure down low but are unable to finish plays while the EXPRESS continue to get frustrated by numerous defensive plays from FREEZER defenders.  At this moment of the game, Luedee only has around 3 shots directed towards the net.  Pietrantonio has obtained 3 good scoring chances, converting one and Ricciardi buzzes on the outside but is unable to cut inside to improve his chances.  Manny Taveroff [#4] takes charge at 9 minute mark when he pops the bottle on a wicked wrister.  FREEZER fully takes control of the game when, a minute later, Réal Paquette [#3] runs into the slot, alerts Taveroff, receives a pass, fires off a quick shot which sees the ball squeeze itself between the legs of the goalie and roll into the net.  This 4-1 lead for FREEZER cuts down the intensity on the EXPRESS.  A powerplay opportunity for the EXPRESS however brings back some mo-jo but their inability to put one past Castonovo takes it away.  The clock runs down to the final minute when Manny Taveroff [#4] completes his hat-trick on two EXPRESS turnovers by taking two quality wrist shots.

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette

FREEZER 10 [5-3-2]  vs  XYFACTOR [7-2-0]

Tuesday November 21 2006

Full lineups for both teams.  XYFACTOR leads the season series 2-0-0 with wins of 4-1 and 5-2.  FREEZER 10 are 4-0-1 in their last 5 while XYFACTOR are 3-2-0.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.  Bruce Coupethwaite in goal for XYFACTOR.

FIRST GOAL = Freezer {Jean Roy [8th]  1st period  0:48}

Ina Garabedian [#18] takes a shot from the left wing on Coupethwaite.  A rebound occurs to his left.  Jean Roy [#11] is first on the ball and continues moving straight ahead towards the right post.  Coupethwaite slides over to cut the angle when Roy fires the ball.  Somehow, the ball found a small opening and enters the net.

FREEZER 1-0

SECOND GOAL = Freezer {Jean Roy [9th]  1st period  7:25}

Ina Garabedian [#18] recovers a loose ball behind the XYFACTOR net on a point shot from Anne-Marie Parent [#12].  She moves towards the left post area when she fires a quick and precise pass to Jean Roy [#11] located in the left slot.  Roy one-times it just inside the left post as a small opening was available between the right pad of Coupethwaite and the post.

FREEZER 2-0

THIRD GOAL = XYFactor {Pierre-Luc Sarreault [8th]  1st period  14:15}

A goalmouth scramble allows Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#9] to pounce on a loose ball situation, make a move, reposition himself and take a shot into an empty section of the net.

FREEZER 2-1

FOURTH GOAL = Freezer {Ina Garabedian [4th]  1st period  14:50}

A point shot gets taken by Sylvain Léonard [#22], Coupethwaite makes the save but doesn’t cover up the ball that lays free near his glove.  Since there was no whistle, Ina Garabedian [#18] charges the net and is able to take a stab at the ball.  She makes contact and the ball rolls into the back of the net.  Smart play.

FREEZER 3-1

FIFTH GOAL = Freezer {Manny Taveroff [19th]  1st period  17:04}

Réal Paquette [#3] takes a shot from the right point position but misses the net.  Kate Crosby [#7] recovers the loose ball behind the net, moves towards the left post area and fires a cross-crease pass towards Manny Taveroff [#4] who one-times it inside the right post before Coupethwaite can move across.

FREEZER 4-1

END OF FIRST PERIOD

SIXTH GOAL = Freezer {Manny Taveroff [20th]  2nd period  14:10}

Anne-Marie Parent [#12] breaks up an offensive rush near the right wing wall and forwards a pass towards Manny Taveroff [#4].  Taveroff dipsy-doodles his way to within 15 feet when he fires a hard wrister into the top left corner.

FREEZER 5-1

SEVENTH GOAL = XYFactor {Julie Houle [4th]  2nd period  17:05}

The Munros, Gary [#4] and Chris [#6], combine on a give-and-go.  A shot gets taken and Castonovo makes the save but gives up a rebound to his right.  Julie Houle [#5], sees the ball come onto her stick.  She looks up and sees the complete left side of the net open.  She quickly fires the ball into this vast opening.

FREEZER 5-2

EIGHTH GOAL = XYFactor {Gary Munro [9th]  2nd period  24:00}

Gary Munro [#4] receives a pass from Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#9] and takes a shot from the right point.  The shot doesn’t get blocked and finds the top left corner on Castonovo who may well have been screened.

FREEZER 5-3

FREEZER RECAP = Good defensive work limits offensive rebounds and passes through the crease.  Anne-Marie Parent continues her ascension to the GOON squad by picking up her second minor of the season ;-)  Ina Garabedian is finding her game as she finishes with 3 pts [1g + 2a].  Another game with 40+ shots on goal.

XYFACTOR RECAP = Cracks in the XYF armour as defensive play was suspect during several shifts, especially concerning rebound clearings.  Team speed was not a factor here as FREEZER players kept the pace.  Is the League getting adjusted to the style of play of XYF or is it just a bump in the road before another winning streak ??

Les meilleurs: Express: Lino (what the f*ck!!)

FREEZER 7-0

EIGHTH GOAL = Freezer {Sylvain Léonard [2nd]  1st period  23:00}

Ina Garabedian [#18] gets credited with a well earned assist when her ball control skills in the deep left wing area allows Sylvain Léonard [#22] to properly setup in the low slot area.  Garabedian moves in near the left post, takes a shot, a rebound occurs and Léonard bangs it home.

FREEZER 8-0

NINTH GOAL = Freezer {Kate Crosby [8th]  1st period  24:31}

Marc Forget [#0] completes his hat-trick with passes from Ina Garabedian [#18] and Réal Paquette [#3] when he beats Da Costa between the legs with a low shot.

FREEZER 10-0

FREEZER RECAP = Another strong performance by Kate Crosby with 4 goals and 2 assists.  That’s now 8 goals in 3 games for Kate Crosby since her move from defender to forward.  FREEZER held a 37-5 edge in shots after the first period.  Abby Castonovo faces only 3 quality scoring chances in 35 mins of play.

TIGERS RECAP = The honest and brutal truth regarding this team = Shut down Mario Lamontagne and the game is won as he represents the only scoring threat.  The team needs help everywhere as deficiencies are present in all facets of play.

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette

EXPRESS [5-1-0]  vs  FREEZER 10 [2-3-1]

Tuesday October 31

Full lineup for the EXPRESS.  Anne-Marie Parent [#12] missing in action for FREEZER, she is replaced by Marie-Josée Blanchet [#0].  Sylvain Loyer in goal for the EXPRESS.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER 10.  First meeting of the season between last year’s finalists.

FIRST GOAL = Lino Pietrantonio (20) 1st period  8:35

The hottest goal scorer of the League, Lino Pietrantonio [#15], receives a short pass from Sherry Page [#53] located deep on the right wing.  Pietrantonio makes a few moves at the right point, including a spin-o-rama and fires a low wrist shot that beats Castonovo inside the right post.

EXPRESS 1-0

SECOND GOAL = Kate Crosby (4)  1st period  15:20

During the final seconds of a powerplay, Réal Paquette [#3] moves up with the ball upto the central area and fires a hard pass to Jean Roy [#11] located besides the right post.  Roy immediately directs a pass towards Kate Crosby [#7] uncovered near the left post.  Crosby gets a shot off but doesn’t get “full wood” on it.  The ball slowly makes it’s way towards the left post and enters the net as an EXPRESS defender is unable to stop it.

SCORE TIED 1-1

THIRD GOAL = Lino Pietrantonio (21) 1st period  21:45

A bad clear from a FREEZER defender creates a turnover.  Lino Pietrantonio [#15] intercepts the attempt, takes a few steps forward and fires another precise wrister that beats Castonovo.

EXPRESS 2-1

FOURTH GOAL = Leonard Luedee (2) 1st period  24:40

Following a give-and-go with Sylvain Loyer, Leonard Luedee [#24] winds up and fires a slapshot from in front of his own net.  The ball finds a lane and ends up behind Castonovo into the net.  Abby surely wanted to get that one back.

EXPRESS 3-1

END OF FIRST PERIOD

FIFTH GOAL = Lino Pietrantonio (22) {pp} 2nd period  4:45

With the EXPRESS enjoying a 4 on 2 powerplay, Lino Pietrantonio [#15] receives a pass from Leonard Luedee [#24], pulls on the trigger with another very precise wrister and completes the hat trick.

EXPRESS 4-1

SIXTH GOAL = Manny Taveroff (10) 2nd period  6:00

Sylvain Léonard [#39] creates an incursion deep into the EXPRESS zone and finds Manny Taveroff [#4] alone in the low slot.  The pass is made and Taveroff beats Loyer glove side inside the right post.

EXPRESS 4-2

SEVENTH GOAL = Manny Taveroff (11) 2nd period  6:35

Manny Taveroff [#4] breaks up an EXPRESS attack in the central area.  He ends up with the ball, takes one or two steps and fires a hard high snapper into the top left corner with Loyer not even moving on the shot as he was probably expecting something else.

EXPRESS 4-3

EIGHTH GOAL = Jean Roy (7) 2nd period  18:30

Jean Roy [#11] completes the comeback for FREEZER when he scores a goal à la Mario Lemieux.  Finding himself behind the goal line deep on left wing, Roy nonetheless, fires towards the left post and the ball pinballs off Loyer’s pads and ends up in the back of the net.

SCORE TIED 4-4

EXPRESS RECAP = Lino Pietrantonio carries the load offensively with 3 goals on nasty wristers.  Problems defensively for the EXPRESS as FREEZER players were able to setup on numerous occasions deep in the slot.  47 shots on goal against Loyer who had to come up with big saves.

FREEZER RECAP = Too many passes up the middle getting intercepted leads to 2 EXPRESS goals.  Two goals within a 35 second timespan in the second period allows FREEZER to recover and get back in the game.  Easily, the shot count could have been at 60 since numerous shots missed the mark throughout the game.

SCORE TIED 2-2

FIFTH GOAL = Kate Crosby (2) 1st period  13:22

A point shot from Ina Garabedian [#18] gets stopped by Silvaggio as he drops down to the floor.  Kate Crosby [#7] and Garabedian converge on the prone goalie and see the ball pop out behind him and rolling on the goal line.  Crosby is the quickest of the two FREEZER players and taps the ball into the empty net for her second goal of the game.

FREEZER 3-2

SIXTH GOAL = Kate Crosby (3) 1st period  15:07

Manny Taveroff [#4] is controlling the play at the left point position when he is able to deke one BOOMERANGS defender, move in a few more feet and fires a hard pass towards the right post area.  Kate Crosby [#7], once again well placed, beats Silvaggio just inside the right post with another tapper.  Hat trick for Kate !!!

FREEZER 4-2

Coming out from behind his own net after a give-and-go with his goalie, Angelo D’Agostino [#19] advances towards the central area and fires a hard snapper that beats Castonovo in the top left corner.

FREEZER 5-3

END OF FIRST

NINTH GOAL = Manny Taveroff (8) 2nd period  2:34

Great pass from Kate Crosby [#7] from behind the net to Manny Taveroff [#4] located in the low slot.  Bam-bam play and it’s in the net.

FREEZER 6-3

TENTH GOAL = Manny Taveroff (9) 2nd period  3:09

A bad clear up the middle allows Réal Paquette [#3] to make an interception and get the pass ahead to Manny Taveroff [#4] through 2 BOOMERANGS defenders.  Taveroff makes his spin move and beats Silvaggio.

FREEZER 7-3

ELEVENTH GOAL = Ragesh Patel (6) 2nd period  6:45

FREEZER 7-4

TWELFTH GOAL = Pietro Porco (14) 2nd period  12:30

Julie Chenevert [#7] at the left point position, makes a pass towards Ragesh Patel [#23] at the right point.  Patel fires a hard shot towards the left post which is redirected by Pietro Porco [#97] behind Castonovo for his third goal of the match.

FREEZER 7-5

THIRTEENTH GOAL = Angelo D’Agostino (3) 2nd period  17:35

D’Agostino [#19], located at the left point position, fires a ground rolling slapper that is not picked up visually by Castonovo and finds the back of the net.

FREEZER 7-6

FREEZER RECAP = Fantastic game for Kate Crosby with her first ever hat trick and a 5 point game.  She and Manny Taveroff clicked very well as a forward line [6 goals and 4 assists] and produced pretty much all of the offense.  Good defensive work from Anne-Marie Parent who broke up several passing attempts in the defensive zone.  Some defensive deficiencies late in the game gives the team’s blood pressure a few unnecessary jolts.

BOOMERANGS RECAP = Pietro Porco scores three more and now has 14 for the season.  Solid play from Angelo D’Agostino offensively with 2 goals and 2 helpers.  Deficient defensive play allows FREEZER forwards to plant themselves right on Silvaggio’s porch and tap in several goals.  Late comeback comes short as time runs out.

XYFACTOR [4-0-0]  vs  FREEZER 10 [1-2-1]

Tuesday October 17

Kayla Walker [#18] is absent for this game for XYFACTOR, she is replaced by Carolyn Myrand [#13].  Manny Taveroff [#4] is missing in action for FREEZER while Ina Garabedian [#18] makes her debut.  Bruce Coupethwaite in goal for XYFACTOR.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER.

FIRST GOAL = Louis Paquette (3)  1st period  6:05

A bad clear from the FREEZER zone gives the ball up near the central area.  Julie Houle [#5] intercepts and relays the ball to Chris Munro [#6].  He spots Louis Paquette [#7] alone at the right point.  Paquette accepts the pass, uses a FREEZER defender as a screen and fires a high snapper that beats Castonovo in the top left corner.

XYFACTOR 1-0

SECOND GOAL = Sylvain Léonard (1) {pp}  1st period  10:08

Anne-Marie Parent [#12] prevents a shorthanded breakout by XYFACTOR at the left point.  She forwards the ball which gets picked up by Jean Roy [#11] in the left wing area.  Roy spots Sylvain Léonard [#22] at the central point and makes him a pass.  Roy positions himself in front of the XYFACTOR net and creates a perfect screen as Léonard fires a high slapper into the top left corner with Coupethwaite reacting late on the shot.

SCORE TIED 1-1

THIRD GOAL = Louis Paquette (4) 1st period  11:40

A good incursion by Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#9] forces the FREEZER defense to backup.  A quick pass back to the right point feeds Louis Paquette [#7].  The FREEZER defense does not block the shot which beats Castonovo high on the right side.

XYFACTOR 2-1

FOURTH GOAL = Chris Munro (4) 1st period  12:51

Louis Paquette [#7] feeds Chris Munro [#6] at the right point.  Munro advances a few steps and uses a FREEZER defender as a screen.  The shot beats Castonovo high on the left side.  A goal very similar to the first XYF marker.

XYFACTOR 3-1

FIFTH GOAL = Jean Roy (6) {pp} 1st period  16:24

With FREEZER on the powerplay, Réal Paquette [#3] does the give and go with Abby Castonovo and moves out beyond the FREEZER net.  The whole middle opens up and Paquette speeds up into the area and fires a low slapshot.  Coupethwaite makes the save but gives a rebound to his left.  Jean Roy [#11] is well positioned and captures the rebound.  He fires a high wrister inside the right post over a sprawled Coupethwaite.

XYFACTOR 3-2

END OF FIRST PERIOD

SIXTH GOAL = Gary Munro (3) 2nd period  14:31

XYFACTOR produces good offensive pressure and sets up Gary Munro [#4] in the high left slot.  The tall dude picks the top left corner with a very precise wrister.

XYFACTOR 4-2

SEVENTH GOAL = Julie Houle (2) {pp} 2nd period  22:10

Gary Munro [#4] carries the ball along the left wing and fires a pass towards the slot.  The ball hits several legs and sticks and ends up in the back of the FREEZER net.  Julie Houle [#5] is the fortunate XYFACTOR player to have deflected the ball before it entered the net.  A pinball goal.

XYFACTOR 5-2

XYFACTOR RECAP = All 4 male players possess speed and shooting skills.  All 4 female players know their way around the offensive net and in their defensive zone.  Bruce Coupethwaite makes quality saves and timely ones when they are needed.  Very few weaknesses that can be witnessed so far.

FREEZER RECAP = Several sustained offensive moments but no goals to show for them.  Better coordination between forwards and defenders but there needs to be more involvement from the defenders into the offense.  So far, this is not last year’s team that went on a long winning streak.

Boomerangs 9 vs Tigers 2

XyFactor 6 vs Bengal Tigers 4

XY Factor 3 vs Maniacs 1

Tuesday October 3

Full lineups for both teams.  Marie-Josée Blanchet  brings the FREEZER 10 contingent to nine players.  Mike Silvaggio in goal for the BOOMERANGS while Abby Castonovo does the same for FREEZER 10.

FIRST GOAL = Frank Pietrantonio (1)  1st period  6:24

Angelo D’Agostino [#14] takes a slapshot from the right point position which is stopped by Abby Castonovo but a rebound occurs.  Frank Pietrantonio [#31] uses his body to fight his way towards the loose ball, gets it and fires a wrister over a sprawled Castonovo.

BOOMERANGS 1-0

SECOND GOAL = Réal Paquette (2)  1st period 10:40

Manny Taveroff [#4] is successful on an offensive incursion on the right side.  Spotting Réal Paquette [#3] in front of the BOOMERANGS net, Taveroff fires a hard pass which is redirected by Paquette onto Silvaggio.  The BOOMERANGS goaltender makes the save but sees the ball fall to the floor and roll onto the left post.  Paquette beats Silvaggio to the ball and pokes it in.

SCORE TIED 1-1

THIRD GOAL = Ragesh Patel (1)  1st period  20:00

Ragesh Patel [#23] picks up a loose ball in his own zone, moves up the right wing, cuts in towards the middle at the central line and lets go a wicked high riser which beats Castonovo into the top right corner.  Beautiful goal.

BOOMERANGS 2-1

FOURTH GOAL = Pietro Porco (2)  2nd period  9:31

A miscommunication between Marie-Josée Blanchet [#1] and Réal Paquette [#3] in the defensive zone leads to a turnover.  Pietro Porco [#97] receives a nice gift, uses Paquette as a screen and fires a wrist shot that beats Castonovo inside the right post.

BOOMERANGS 3-1

FIFTH GOAL = Sherry Page (1) {pp}  2nd period  14:48

Good passing between Diana Tourneur [#0] and Eric Riopel [#78] near the left point creates a passing opportunity towards the low slot.  Sherry Page [#16] inherits the pass and fires a low grounder which beats Castonovo just inside the right post.  Well placed shot.

BOOMERANGS 4-1

SIXTH GOAL = Manny Taveroff (6)  2nd period  22:00

Mylan Lehuu [#0] grabs a loose ball in the offensive zone and directs a pass towards Manny Taveroff [#4] located in the high slot.  Taveroff fires off a good hard shot that beats Silvaggio high right side.

Jean Roy completes his hat trick when he receives a pass from Sylvain Léonard and fires another quick wrister, once again, inside the left post.  Methinks Mr.Roy has found a weak spot.

FREEZER 4-1

SIXTH GOAL = Manny Taveroff (4)  1st period  17:46

Mylan Lehuu [#0] creates a turnover deep in the left corner and relays the ball to Manny Taveroff in the low slot.  Taveroff uses a TIGERS’ defender as a screen and goes for a backhand shot that beats Da Costa inside the right post.

FREEZER 5-1

SEVENTH GOAL = Jean Roy (4) {pp}  1st period  22:07

With only 3 seconds left on the powerplay, Jean Roy scores his fourth goal of the period, after another good setup from Sylvain Léonard, by going, once again, to his favorite location on this night, inside the left post.

FREEZER 6-1

EIGHTH GOAL = Mylan Lehuu (2)  1st period  23:03

Mylan Lehuu is rewarded by being at the right place at the right time when she scoops up a rebound from a Jean Roy shot to the right of Da Costa and buries the one footer inside the left post.

FREEZER 7-1

NINTH GOAL = Jean Roy (5)  1st period  23:44

Inside the left post, nuff’said…Fifth goal of the period for Roy.

FREEZER 8-1

TENTH GOAL = Shakeel Bedassy (1)  2nd period  15:54

The TIGERS convert their only powerplay opportunity when Ted Dranias [#9] sends a pass across the crease from the left side to a waiting Shakeel Bedassy [#2] near the right post.  Bedassy fires a quick shot into the net before Abby Castonovo can come across and stop him.

FREEZER 8-2

ELEVENTH GOAL = Mylan Lehuu (3)  2nd period  22:25

Mylan Lehuu receives a short pass from Jean Roy and fires a quick wrister at the left wing position.  The shot beats Da Costa on his right side before he can come over and cover the hole.

FREEZER 9-2

TWELFTH GOAL = Manny Taveroff (5)  2nd period  24:50

Whirlwind offensive presence rewards Taveroff as he fires a quick wrister just inside the right post.

FREEZER 10-2

TIGERS RECAP = A lot of work needs to get done before this team can get it going.  Only one scoring threat in Mario Lamontagne.  Disorganized defensive play.  Inefficient passing plays.  A long season ahead.

FREEZER RECAP = Total domination.  Jean Roy scores 5 goals in the first period.  Full offensive presence brings 10 tallies.

FREEZER 10 [0-1-0]  vs  SCREAMING MANIACS [0-1-0]

Tuesday September 26

One lineup change for FREEZER 10 as Marie-Josée Blanchet gets replaced by Sherry Page.  One lineup change for the MANIACS as well as Alicia Cafferata replaces Jennifer Jones-Patulli.  Abby Castonovo in goal for FREEZER while Matthew Barlow does the same for the MANIACS.

FIRST GOAL = Mylan Lehuu (1) {sh}  1st period     5:32

Abby Castonovo gets called for a minor penalty by freezing the ball outside the basketball key area.  A new rule imposed by the League this year but, it would appear, that the dissemination of this information has not trickled down.  Nonetheless, the MANIACS have control of the ball in the FREEZER zone for about 20 to 30 seconds when a defensive clearing attempt is successful.  Mylan Lehuu [#0] is battling with a MANIACS forward at the central faceoff dot when the ball gets directed towards the penalty bench area.  Kate Crosby [#7], FREEZER defender, decides to cut off a MANIACS forward heading towards the loose ball.  Kate battles for the ball and is able to poke it ahead along the right wing wall.  She jumps over a stick and recovers the ball near the MANIACS bench.  She spots Mylan Lehuu stationed near the left post.  Kate fires a hard pass that goes through the slot and gets accepted by Mylan who quickly shovels the ball into the opening near the left post.  The decision to go for the ball near the penalty bench area and make the transition from defence to offence pays off big time for Kate.  Mylan puts the finishing touch with a 1 footer.

FREEZER 1-0

SECOND GOAL = Manny Taveroff (2)  2nd period     5:52

Picking up a loose ball near the penalty bench area, Manny Taveroff [#4] uses his speed to evade one pursuer, then produces an inside-out deke on a MANIACS defender, which allows him to cut in towards the right post before unleashing a laser wrister into the top left corner.   It was the place to go on this night since pretty much everything down low was not going in against Matthew Barlow on this night.

FREEZER 2-0

THIRD GOAL = Régent Proulx (1)  2nd period     20:03

The MANIACS begin their comeback when their QB takes possession of a loose ball situation.  Mike Callaghan [#41], picks up the loose ball in his own zone and makes a quick pass towards Régent Proulx [#33] near the central line.  Régent Proulx sees Réal Paquette [#3] advancing towards him and decides to take a low snapper which is not blocked by the advancing FREEZER defender.  Abby Castonovo gets caught off guard near his right post as the ball squeezes into the small opening.  A pinpoint shot from Proulx.

FREEZER 2-1

FOURTH GOAL = Greg Phendler (1)  2nd period     25:17

The MANIACS net is empty as the team is going for the equalizer.  FREEZER is unable to get their hands on the ball as the MANIACS are able to maintain control but are kept mostly on the outside.  Stephanie Jowett [#36] makes a short pass to Mike Callaghan at the left point.  Mike spots Greg Phendler [#7] running hard on the right wing.  He directs a pass towards him which gets accepted.  Réal Paquette finds himself in a similar position as he is advancing towards Greg in order to block the shot as Greg is starting his windup.  The shot gets through unblocked and beats Abby Castonovo just inside the left post.  The MANIACS score two in the last 6 minutes and come away with a point in the standings.

SCORE TIED 2-2

FREEZER RECAP = A much better performance than last week with more scoring chances.  Inability to put the game away after taking a 2-0 lead proves costly.  Better passing plays in the offensive zone creates several 2 footers directed towards Matthew Barlow.  Most of the 20 shots taken towards Castonovo are from the outside.  Shot blocking clinic now required……

MANIACS RECAP = First star of the game goes to Matthew Barlow for his terrific performance.  Active glovehand throughout the match and good side-to-side maneuvers prevents several FREEZER stuffers from finding the back of the net.  Opportunistic scoring from the “goon” Proulx  begins the comeback.  Mike Callaghan, once again, is the main offensive catalyst.

TUESDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette

XYFACTOR vs FREEZER 10

Tuesday September 19

The first game of the 2006-2007 season matches one of the finalists of last year’s finals [FREEZER 10] and one of the 2 new teams that have joined the league this year [XYFACTOR].  For FREEZER 10, no changes in the regular lineup as all players from last year return.  Lucie Maréchal joins the team as a forward.  Ina Garabedian, last year’s top women goal and points scorer will be missing the first month of competition and will be replaced by Mylan Lehuee.  Marie-Josée Blanchet was added to the roster as well for the game.

First Goal = XYFACTOR [Gary Munro {1}]  11:08 1st period

FREEZER 10 was just finishing off a penalty to Manny Taveroff.  Good ball possession by XYFACTOR deep in the right wing corner produces several shots on the FREEZER net.  Gary Munro [#66], the QB on the PP, controls and directs the play.  He produces a good give and go with Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#21] during most of the powerplay.  The penalty ends but FREEZER are unable to properly clear the defensive zone.  A bad giveaway gives the ball directly onto Sarreault’s stick,  a quick short flick onto Gary Munro’s stick and he moves in from the right point position.  Abby Castonovo, the FREEZER goalie, tries to come out and cut the angle down but Munro’s quick snapper squeezes in just inside the right post.

Second Goal = FREEZER 10 [Manny Taveroff {1}]  19:35 1st period

A good offensive stretch by FREEZER produces several shots, not all on net but still enough to allow a continued presence in the offensive zone.  A bad clear by one of the XY defenders gets intercepted by Réal Paquette [#3].  Paquette moves up a few feet and fires a low slap shot from about 15 feet.  Bruce Coupethwaite, the XY goalie, makes the save but gives up a rebound to his left.  Manny Taveroff [#4], fights off a XY defender, grabs the loose ball and fires it into the empty XY net.

Third Goal = XYFACTOR [Chris Munro {1}]  19:54  1st period

On the ensuing faceoff from the equalizer scored by Taveroff, FREEZER 10 win the draw and the ball gets sent behind the FREEZER faceoff man towards the right defender position.  Chris Munro uses a burst of speed and beats this right defender to the ball.  He immediately fires a hard low snapper which finds room between the legs of Abby Castonovo as he was going down in a butterfly position.  Momentum quickly switches back towards XYFACTOR.

Fourth Goal = XYFACTOR [Pierre-Luc Sarreault {1}]  6:01  2nd period

Good deep zone offensive pressure on the left wing side allows XYFACTOR to pin down FREEZER.  Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#21] and Noémie Dutil [#93] harass FREEZER defenders and produce a loose ball situation.  Dutil corrals the ball and makes a short but precise pass towards Sarreault, he fires off a shot which is saved by Castonovo and the ball gets deflected towards the back wall.  Sarreault is first on the loose ball and circles back towards the right post.  Castonovo is down on his knees and is adjacent to the right post when Sarreault fires a high wrister.  Somehow, the ball finds a little opening over the right shoulder of Castonovo and ends up in the back of the net.

Fifth Goal = XYFACTOR [Pierre-Luc Sarreault {2} ]  7:10  2nd period

When things go your way…… Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#21] is the beneficiary of a semi-breakaway pass from Louis Paquette [#8] on the right wing.  The ball is a bit ahead of Sarreault and Abby Castonovo decides to come out of his net and poke the ball away from the XY attacker.  Sarreault quickly flicks the ball towards the goalie, the ball hits Castonovo’s stick and pops up in the air.  The ball lands behind Castonovo and rolls into the net.

XYFACTOR RECAP = Efficient defensive positioning without possession of the ball.  Good goaltending with few rebound opportunities.  Quick shifty forwards.  Pierre-Luc Sarreault [#21] and Gary Munro [#66] main offensive threats.  Opportunistic scoring.

FREEZER 10 RECAP = Uncoordinated attacks amongst forwards and defenders.  Passing deficiencies.  Many close calls near the XY net but no positive finish.  Equal amount of scoring chances as XY but no finish.
