FRIDAY LEAGUE POST by Réal Paquette QUARTER-FINALS DRAGONS vs WANDERERS GAME 2 The DRAGONS have their full lineup of 9 players.
The WANDERERS have their full lineup of 8 players as Sylvain Léonard makes his playoff debut. Carlos Da Costa in goal for the WANDERERS. Régent Proulx in
goal for the DRAGONS. First period The DRAGONS lead the series 1-0 and all the pressure is in the WANDERERS’ camp as they must
win Game 2 in order to force a third and deciding game in this series. The return
of Sylvain Léonard [#22] will help as the open slot area that gave Kamlesh Patel [#4] three goals in Game 1 should now be
non-existant or at the very least reduced to only a few opportunities. The game
begins and both sides obtain some decent offensive chances but nothing that ranks as quality as both teams are able to keep
dangerous forwards away from prime areas. More room to maneuver this time for
Rick Mezey [#68] as the intense defensive measures taken against him in Game 1 seems to have been lifted somewhat. This decision costs the WANDERERS at the Second period As in Game 1, the DRAGONS’ bench speech focuses on keeping the same intensity and
short shift mentality. Most definitely not “turtling” and wait for
the clock to run out. The DRAGONS send a strong claim to win the series when
Rick Mezey [#68] scores his second goal of the game on a shot near the right wing wall some 15 feet away that, somehow, finds
the back of the net. When things go your way….The WANDERERS finally get
on the scoreboard when Peter Knapp [#2] dekes one player, advanced to within 6 feet on the left side and buries a wrister
over the right shoulder of Proulx. This much needed goal fires up the WANDERERS
as they apply more intense forechecking and try to disrupt the steady “one-two passing clearing the defensive zone play
of the DRAGONS”. Penalties start getting called in this period as the WANDERERS’
desperation creates positive and negative results. Proulx is called upon to make
several big saves from in-close to keep the score at 5-1 but the WANDERERS are definitely the aggressors now. With about 7:15 to go in the game a goalmouth melee breaks out when Van Thy Nguyen is jumped on by Mike
Callaghan after Nguyen and Da Costa exchanged a few words and a tussle erupted between the two. By all appearances, Nguyen was pushed into the WANDERERS’ goalie who reacted to the physical contact. The referees huddle and give a minor to both Nguyen and Da Costa and a game misconduct
to Callaghan who is now out of the game for being the 3rd man in. A
big loss for the WANDERERS as they try to make a comeback 4 goals down with just over 7 minutes to go in the game. Just under 5 minutes to go now when Manny Taveroff [#4] finds a loose ball in the crease and buries it. Suddenly, a momentum shift can be felt as the WANDERERS have nothing to lose and go
full-tilt. Peter Knapp [#2] scores his second goal of the match when he intercepts
a bad pass deep in the DRAGONS’ zone and dekes Proulx with an out-in move. 2
minutes to go and the score is now 5-3. The WANDERERS now believe a comeback
is in the making when, 25 seconds later, Peter Knapp [#2] fires a snapper from the left slot area after a feed from Tom Dayon
[#53]. Holy Moley Batman !! It’s
now 5-4 and the tension can be felt on both teams. One team desperately trying
to equalize things while the other trying to will the clock to go faster. With
about a minute to go, the WANDERERS pull their goalie but are having a hard time acquiring the ball as Kamlesh Patel [#4]
and Rick Mezey [#68] are doing a fine job of “keepaway” and burning off valuable seconds as the sweat glands go
into OT. The DRAGONS are able to clamp things down in the final minute and seal
the victory….. DRAGONS WIN SERIES 2-0 DRAGONS RECAP = Another strong start with timely and opportunistic scoring. Van Thy Nguyen provides plenty of offense once again. 7 points
in 2 games for Nguyen [4g + 3a]. Strong game as well for Franco San Gregorio
with numerous crease chances and disruptions providing Rick Mezey with several scoring opportunities. WANDERERS RECAP = The Peter Knapp of “old” with a quality display for all
3 of his goals. Dayon and Callaghan not a factor in this game as they were unable
to generate enough quality scoring chances for their teammates. Not enough offensive
penetration on too many shifts forces shots from outside or from poor shooting angles.

is out of the lineup due to injury and Léonard could not make it for this game giving the WANDERERS a lineup of 7. The DRAGONS have nine players qualified as well for the playoffs.
Mezey + San Gregorio + G.Kabenian + K.Patel as forwards. Nguyen + Wong
+ R.Patel + S.Kabenian + Paquette as defencemen. The DRAGONS have a full lineup
for this match. Carlos Da Costa in goal for the WANDERERS. Régent Proulx in goal for the DRAGONS. First period As is usually the case in the first game of a playoff series, both teams try to establish their offensive
strategies early in the period as well as keying defensively on important players. For
the WANDERERS, keying on Rick Mezey [#68] is quite in evidence as there is always somebody following him and always a stick
hacking away at him as soon as the ball is within his area of control. For the
DRAGONS, keying on Mike Callaghan [#41] is crucial in limiting offensive chances as the majority of the WANDERERS’ chances
occur when he is on the floor. Limiting Tom Dayon [#53] on the outside is also
key for victory as his ball control abilities make him a very dangerous forward. Thus,
it is always at this time that other players must step up and help counterbalance the intense checking that goes on against
key players. The DRAGONS see one such player emerge at the Second period Confidence is high on the DRAGONS’ bench but the half-time speech insists on keeping
the foot on the “gas pedal” and not letting up. The intensity continues
when 2 more goals get scored for the DRAGONS within the opening 3 minutes. Kamlesh
Patel [#4] scores his 3rd goal of the match when George Kabenian takes the ball away from Greg Phendler [#57] behind
the WANDERERS’ net and finds Patel alone in the slot. Van Thy Nguyen scores
75 seconds later when he fires a slapper inside the left post through a crowd. The
half-time speech worked. The WANDERERS finally get some life when Tom Dayon [#53]
completes a play from Mike Callaghan [#41] and beats Proulx from in-close. This
provokes an upsurge in the play of the WANDERERS who intensify their forechecking and start creating turnovers but Proulx
shuts down every opportunity with saves and controlled rebounds. The DRAGONS
reestablish their 6 goal lead when Van Thy Nguyen [#71] scores his 3rd goal of the game on a blast from the point
after a tic-tac-toe passing play between Rick Mezey [#68] and Franco San Gregorio [#27] with around 10 minutes to go in the
match. It now becomes a game of running down the clock. The WANDERERS score on the powerplay with just over 5 minutes to go in the game when Tom Dayon [#53] beats
Proulx just over the left shoulder near the right post after Proulx had moved away from the post to cover a possible pass
across the crease. Too little too late though as that would prove to be the last
quality scoring chance for the WANDERERS in the match… DRAGONS LEAD SERIES 1-0 WANDERERS RECAP = Having only 3 defencemen hurt the team as tired legs allowed plenty
of room in the slot area for opposition forwards. Mike Callaghan did pick up
2 assists but was kept pretty much in check. The return of Sylvain Léonard for
GAME 2 will most certainly help. The forwards will have to improve on their ability
to find the slot and crease areas. DRAGONS RECAP = Kamlesh Patel and Van Thy Nguyen answer the call with hat-tricks each
as Rick Mezey receives “special” attention. Mezey is still able to create quality scoring chances with pinpoint passing. Solid game for the D as about two thirds of the 31 shots allowed come from the outside. FINAL SCORE

with an 15-10 edge in goals. The DRAGONS are First period With the playoff matchups already determined due to the matches played previously in the evening,
the DRAGONS approached this game as a tuneup of offensive and defensive tactics. On
a personal note, Rick Mezey [#68] needed only 1 pt to claim the Scoring Championship which would be a first for any DRAGONS
player for their existence in CASC. The OUTLAWS play a north-south game where
finesse is not in evidence. It’s pretty much shoot from far and crash the
net for rebounds. The onus is put on physical play which, unfortunately for the
OUTLAWS, leads to numerous penalties and frustration. The DRAGONS meanwhile have
to finetune their lineup with proper line pairings and remaining active throughout their shifts, keeping their shifts shorter
as they have a tendency to stay on too long and become ineffective in the defensive zone.
Rick Mezey [#68] claims the Scoring Championship at the 7 minute mark when, after a feed from Réal Paquette [#5], Mezey
fires a shot just inside the right post that is saved by Second period The DRAGONS put the game out of reach with two quick goals within 2 minutes. At the 7 minute mark, George Kabenian [#11] completes a Simon Kabenian [#69] pass and beats DRAGONS RECAP = Rick Mezey ends up with 6 pts [4G + 2A] and claims the Scoring Championship
for Pts [63] and Goals [40] all in only 16 GP. Better footspeed and shorter shifts
help improve defensive coverages. First time this season that all players on
the roster, except for the goalie, obtain at least 1 pt. OUTLAWS RECAP = Brian Hazek obtains two goals the usual way, bulldozing through the crease
and converting rebounds. If this team comes back next season, it must find offensive
players with ball control skills. More speed on D is also needed as too many

is tied at First period Great start for the DRAGONS as they take advantage of a short bench early in the game concerning
the ICE CATS. Good forechecking pressure keeps the ball in the offensive zone
for the DRAGONS and they draw an early penalty. Taking a pass from Van Thy Nguyen
[#71] and having Franco San Gregorio [#27] creating a perfect screen in front of Garoufalis, Réal Paquette [#5] fires a slapshot
from the leftpoint area into the top right corner. This spurs the DRAGONS on
and they continue harassing the ICE CATS defence. The territorial advantage is
definitely favoring the DRAGONS. The DRAGONS increase their lead to 3-0 with
2 goals within Second period The DRAGONS lead by one to start the second period but lack of speed is a major cause
for concern as the team looks terrible on too many shifts. The ICE CATS kick
their offensive game into a higher gear and the DRAGONS are unable to follow as more and more 3-on-2’s develop in favor
of the ICE CATS. 3 goals within a 10 minute timespan allows the ICE CATS to grab
a 2 goal lead. All goals coming from in-close shots either by the third man on
a 3-on-2 or by individual efforts in the crease area. The DRAGONS offensively
continue creating several scoring chances but Jimmy Garoufalis is now stopping everything thrown his way. It is when the DRAGONS lose the ball that things get complicated as team defence is struggling with the
quickness of the ICE CATS forwards and the constant offensive intrusions of Mike Somma [#4] and Sean McKeogh [#5]. Both teams exchange two goals apiece during the last 8 minutes as the DRAGONS waste another early lead
and end up with another tally in the L column. ICE CATS RECAP = Poor start in the first 10 minutes as the team gives up 3 goals. Impressive offensive forays by Mike Somma and Sean McKeogh lead to numerous 3-on-2
situations for the team. Chris Barnett shows set-up skills as he nabs 4 helpers. DRAGONS RECAP = Team speed is definitely not one of this team’s strengths as defensive
zone coverages were downright awful on too many shifts this game. Offensive opportunities

The Season series is tied at First period Always a physical game between these two teams as neither side gives in on the forecheck. The WANDERERS have Tony Ricci [#13] in the lineup, a dangerous forward but his
lack of games played will mean an absence in this year’s playoffs. Something
less to worry about for whoever the WANDERERS meet in the first round of the playoffs.
The WANDERERS have more speed up front than the DRAGONS and use it well in the early going. The opening shifts see long seconds spent in the DRAGONS’ end.
Only wayward shots and some key saves from Proulx keeps the game scoreless. The
DRAGONS finally respond when their D get active and start pinching in offensively. Van
Thy Nguyen [#71] is rewarded for his crease presence when he bangs in a rebound at the 8 minute mark. About a minute later, a “Stomping Tom Connors” shot from Sylvain Léonard, the ball bouncing
at least 3 or 4 times, finds a way through Proulx and into the net. The WANDERERS
take the lead on a wrister from Tony Ricci [#13] with about 10 minutes to go in the period.
The DRAGONS regain control of the match when they are better able to contain the opposing forechecking and create turnovers. John Wong [#77] scores one from “Downtown” on a slapper that finds room
inside the left post on Da Costa at the 20 minute mark. The DRAGONS go ahead
3-2 on a powerplay goal from Franco San Gregorio [#27] when he receives a pass in the crease, waits a few seconds, then fires
a no-look backhand that enters inside the right post with about 3 minutes to go in the period. Second period The DRAGONS seem in command but the WANDERERS step up their intensity and Mike Callaghan
[#41] starts pinching in more often to upset things. Manny Taveroff [#4] scores
the first of 3 goals in the period at the 3 minute mark when a shot from Callaghan hits him in the leg and squirms it’s
way underneath Proulx. The DRAGONS have problems organizing their offense and
are unable to sustain long sequences in the offensive zone. The WANDERERS have
been able to reclaim the territorial edge and are constantly harassing the DRAGONS defence.
With about 9 minutes to go, Manny Taveroff [#4] puts the WANDERERS ahead for good with a good wrister inside the right
post from the right wing position. The WANDERERS increase their lead to 5-3 when
Taveroff [#4] completes the hat-trick with a similar shot from a similar position with just under 3 minutes to go. The DRAGONS pull their goalie with a minute to go but Tony Ricci [#13] is sent on a breakaway and scores
in the empty net for his 15th goal of the season in his 6th game. WANDERERS RECAP = Solid second period effort after being neutralized for much of the second
half of the first. Manny Taveroff finds his scoring touch with 3 markers. Carlos Da Costa plays a good game with key saves early in the second period. DRAGONS RECAP = Another second period disappearing act as the team gets outscored 4-0. Only 30 shots on Da Costa and several wayward shots on crease shooting situations. The return of Rick Mezey is long overdue as the DRAGONS need to find their offensive

The HIRED GUNS are missing one player in Marc Goyens [#2]. The Season
series is tied at 1-1-0 with an 13-10 edge in goals favoring the DRAGONS. The
DRAGONS are 2-3-0 in their last 5 while the HIRED GUNS are 3-2-0. Régent Proulx
in goal for the DRAGONS. Jimmy Garoufalis in goal for the HIRED GUNS. First period Another typical DRAGONS – HIRED GUNS battle as both sides participate in transitional
attacks. Many plays are stopped at the “blue line” and quick reversals
are the order of the day. The HIRED GUNS have more success pinching in a third
guy than the DRAGONS do. Not much room to maneuver early on as both sides try
to establish a zone of control in the main scoring areas. The DRAGONS draw first
blood when Van Thy Nguyen [#71] fires a slapper from the right point that finds room in the top left corner at the 11 minute
mark. The HIRED GUNS draw even on a soft goal when a long range shot from beyond
the red line by Jimmy Pantelis [#23] beats Proulx inside the left post. The GUNS
take the lead when a beautiful tic-tac-to sequence between Danny Holobow [#5], Ian Foster [#8] and Tom Page [#22] results
in a goal for Page in his usual “office” spot, adjacent to the right post for a tap-in. The DRAGONS draw even with about 4 minutes to go when a good second effort by Van Thy Nguyen [#71] on a
rebound allows him to take a backhand shot that finds the back of the net. The
DRAGONS retake the lead when Réal Paquette [#5] takes a backhanded golf shot and fires the ball over the right shoulder of
Jimmy Garoufalis just underneath the crossbar at the left post junction. The
ball was in and out so fast that the HIRED GUNS disputed the goal call by referee Billy Ponting but the decision stood and
rightly so. Second period The HIRED GUNS continue their offensive pinching with their defensemen and it finally
pays off as the DRAGONS seem low on energy in the first half of the second period. Danny
Holobow [#5] moves into the slot and fires a precise wrister high left side to tie the game.
Ian Foster [#8] then gives the lead for good for the HIRED GUNS when a shot from the redline deflects off Proulx’s
goalstick and into the net. The DRAGONS get two breakaways within a 4 minute
timespan for a possible 4-4 score but fail on both attempts. John Wong [#77]
with a wrist shot and Franco San Gregorio [#27] on a deke get stopped by Garoufalis.
The DRAGONS seem unable to generate sustained offence and rack up only about 7 or 8 shots in the period at the 20 minute
mark. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the game, the HIRED GUNS get a 3
on 1 situation and Jimmy Pantelis scores his second goal of the match with a high wrister left-side. DRAGONS RECAP = The DRAGONS need to find some energy boosters for second periods as another
lead goes up in flames. Franco San Gregorio returns to the lineup but shows signs
of rust. Two clean breakaways in the second period produces nada. A 2 goal effort for Van Thy Nguyen. HIRED GUNS RECAP = The constant addition of one defenceman on the rush eventually pays
off in the second period with 3 unanswered goals. Danny Holobow earns 3 pts [1
goal + 2 assists] in a solid offensive performance. The HIRED GUNS add one more

[#19]. Victor DeJesus [#24] makes his League debut for the DRAGONS and Ghislain
Plouffe [#0] makes his second presence of the season. The SPARTANS lead the Season
series 2-0-0 with an 18-11 edge in goals. The SPARTANS are First period A very good flow to the game creates numerous end-to-end rushes as both teams go
all-out offensively. Both goalies get tested from a variety of ranges. The DRAGONS enjoy a lot of success with aggressive forechecking as Ghislain Plouffe [#0] and Rick Mezey
[#68] provide plenty of problems to the SPARTANS’ defence. Long seconds
are spent in the corners. The SPARTANS give up several scoring chances because
of this. Once the SPARTANS are able to get through the opposing forecheck, then
their quick transition game and accurate passing plays put Régent Proulx to the test with some in-close shots. The final 8 minutes of the period present an effective DRAGONS team spending 45 seconds of every minute
in the SPARTANS zone. Two goals result from this and allow the DRAGONS to take
a slim one goal lead at the break. Second period The DRAGONS continue where they left off and score an early goal when Victor DeJesus
obtains his second of the match. His first goal was a nice deke and backhand
move into the top of the net underneath the crossbar. The DRAGONS seem in good
control of the match until halfway through the second period when a giveaway results in a quick SPARTANS goal. This was the spark the SPARTANS needed. Suddenly, they were
the quicker team and had more accuracy in their passing. The DRAGONS could not
equal this new energy burst. The SPARTANS rally to tie the game at 4-4. Then Martin Déry comes up with a tremendous save when he dives from the right post
to the left post and stops a point-blank shot from Van Thy Nguyen [#71] left all alone in the slot. This save and a few more by Déry pumps up the SPARTANS and they go on a 3 goal rampage within a 4 minute
timespan. The DRAGONS could not recover from this flipflop. SPARTANS RECAP = Two games in one for the SPARTANS as the first period was a mess
defensively with long shifts spent in the defensive zone while the second period was a complete offensive party with 6 goals
scored thus erasing a 4-2 deficit. Julien Adam scores 3 goals. Martin Déry comes up with big stops when the match was tied at 4-4 and puts a hex on the DRAGONS. DRAGONS RECAP = A very good first period for the DRAGONS, even though the score
was only 3-2 at the end of it because of pesky forechecking play, effective defensive clearings and the ability to keep up
with the SPARTANS’ roadrunners. Complete meltdown in the second as all

The DRAGONS are First period As expected, both teams show signs of rust as the one month layoff is quite evident. Imprecise passing, ball fumbling at one’s feet, shots missing wide and high. Neither team imposes it’s presence in the opening five minutes of play. The DRAGONS finally click on continuous shifts when they take a 2-0 lead on goals
from Van Thy Nguyen [#14] and Rick Mezey [ #68]. The 35th goal from
Rick Mezey [#68] is a baseball style goal from well out as he batted a bouncing ball in midair that found it’s way across
15 feet into the net. The WANDERERS rally with renewed offensive pressure as
the DRAGONS seemed to lose their feet and starting playing “pylon” hockey.
A flurry of shots leads to a goal from Angelo D’Agostino [#21] off a rebound.
With about 6 minutes to go in the period, Manny Taveroff [#4] escapes from defensive coverage and converts a pass from
Sylvain Léonard [#22] over a sprawled Régent Proulx. Second period The first half of the second period is all DRAGONS as the loss of the 2-0 lead
creates the necessary comeback to resume rapid movement, ball control and quality shots.
Rick Mezey [#68] scores his second goal of the game on a nice low shot between the legs of Da Costa. John Wong [#77] fires a backhand just inside the right post to give the DRAGONS another 2 goal lead. Rajesh Patel [#19] picks up his third assist of the game. Once again though, the DRAGONS stop moving and return to the dreaded “La Tourista” style of
play. The WANDERERS pick up the tempo and score 3 goals within 3 minutes. Including two from Mike Callaghan [#41] on bang-bang plays in the crease. The WANDERERS are in full attack mode as the DRAGONS are trying to find a response without Rick Mezey [#68]
who picked up his second and third penalties of the match. Tom Dayon [#53]
scores a nice goal on a deke as he slips the ball just inside the right post from a location near that same post. The DRAGONS are unable to find the “on” switch and don’t receive any help when a non-call
of a slash on the legs of Kamlesh Patel should have given the DRAGONS at the
very least a 4 minute powerplay situation. The WANDERERS add a sixth goal with
5 minutes to go when Manny Taveroff [#4] fires a backhand into an open net. The
DRAGONS pulled their goalie with about a minute to go but fail to produce anything… DRAGONS RECAP = Out of 52 minutes of playing time, the DRAGONS played about 20

as a defenseman. The DRAGONS also have missing bodies. Rajesh Patel [#19] and Simon Kabenian [#69] are absent. Ghislain
Plouffe [#0] subs in. The DRAGONS lead the Season series 1-0-0 with a 8-1 win
so far. The SHOCKERS are First period With a short bench and with Bob Staric arriving late, the DRAGONS take advantage of this
situation by doing a “full court press” and keeping the ball deep into SHOCKERS territory. Plenty of scoring opportunities occur, several shots go wide and Luedee is keeping his team in the game. But with the inability of the SHOCKERS to clear their zone on a consistent basis,
the DRAGONS keep the pressure on and finally get some results with 3 goals within the first 10 minutes. Then the SHOCKERS enter into penalty problems and the DRAGONS pursue their offensive forays. George Kabenian [#11] scores the fifth goal of his team on a powerplay with a very precise snapper into
the top right corner from about 15 feet on a great feed from Rick Mezey [#68] at the 17th minute mark. The SHOCKERS have no sustained offensive pressure whatsoever. Régent
Proulx is having one of his easiest games of the season. Two more goals late
in the period by the DRAGONS brings the hammer down and takes away any hopes of a comeback for the SHOCKERS. 3 goals and 2 assists in the period for Rick Mezey [#68], 4 assists for Franco San Gregorio [#27]. A 7-0 lead for the DRAGONS after one. Second period Things quiet down somewhat in this period as the DRAGONS release a little bit the forechecking
chores. Kamlesh Patel [#4] obtains his first goal of the season on a low point
shot from the right side that beast Luedee just inside the right post. The SHOCKERS
finally get one when a bad pass up the middle gets intercepted and Rob Horvat [#8] denies Proulx the possibility of a shutout
with a good wrister inside the right post. George Kabenian completes his hat
trick and obtains his 5th point of the match with a little more than 2 minutes to go in the match. The worst enemy for the SHOCKERS was probably all those early office XMAS parties which deprived them of
4 regulars. SHOCKERS RECAP = With only 2 subs on the bench, the SHOCKERS are unable to keep up with
the offensive pressure created by the DRAGONS’ forwards. The SHOCKERS spend
so much time in their own zone that they only register 18 shots on net against Proulx.

feature between these two teams as it is usually a wide open affair with both teams going fullout offensively. The absence of Marc Goyens takes away the “crash the net and get the rebounds” gameplan of
the HIRED GUNS. Ian Foster picks up the slack with his efforts in establishing
a ball control system deep in the offensive zone. He is able to setup but is
unable to hit fellow players with a high degree of accuracy with his passing because the DRAGONS are closing the passing lanes
with a good degree of success. Danny Holobow [#5] opens the scoring at the 5
minute mark with a slapshot from the point. The DRAGONS respond five minutes
later when Rick Mezey [#68] buries a rebound just inside the right post. Tom
Page [#22], usually a DRAGONS killer with his crease goals, is not a factor in this game as a minimum of passes get through
to him. The DRAGONS gradually take charge of the game when both offensive lines
[Mezey-San Gregorio + G.Kabenian-Wong] obtain quality scoring chances with some support from the D men. Two goals within 4 minutes by Franco San Gregorio [#27] {deflected shot} and George Kabenian [#11] {rebound
stuffer} allows the DRAGONS to enter the break with a 3-1 lead. Second period The HIRED GUNS seem slower in the opening minutes.
The DRAGONS put even more pressure on the HG defense by establishing an aggressive forecheck. Rick Mezey [#68] obtains his second goal of the game due to a turnover deep in the offensive zone. John Wong [#77] impresses the gallery when he picks the top left corner on Garoufalis
with a slapper. 2 more goals for the DRAGONS {both one-timers} within 1 minute
puts the game out of reach at 7-1 with about half a period to go. The HIRED GUNS
start taking more shots towards Proulx instead of trying the cross-crease passing play and start having some success as far
as quality scoring chances go. A couple of defensive breakdowns late in the game

Champagne will have to get used to seeing lots of shots from close proximity. Both
teams forget defensive responsibilities which leads to quality scoring chances. The
OUTLAWS build a 4-2 lead only to see it evaporate within a 75 seconds timespan when the prolific duo of Mezey and San Gregorio
team up for 2 goals. The OUTLAWS enter the break with the lead when Vinetti-Huot
beats Proulx on a superb feed by Grant Page. Second period Régent Proulx takes one in the nuts when Mario Lamontagne fires a bullet from the point. The DRAGONS rally around their goalie and shut things down defensively while the offensive production gets
taken care by Rick Mezey who scores 3 goals with Franco San Gregorio adding one more.
The DRAGONS were able to control the ball with greater efficiency and force the OUTLAWS to chase. This created better openings and better success for the Mezey-San Gregorio duo. The OUTLAWS could not retaliate as 2 out of 3 forays into the offensive zone saw errant shots or passes

Tight and entertaining playoff matches between these two foes have created a healthy rivalry. As it turns out, it is only fitting that these two teams meet for the first regular match of the new season. The DRAGONS return with the same roster, a new player has joined the ranks in the
likes of Franco San Gregorio, talks are underway for the addition of other players, Kamlesh Patel will be MIA for the next
month while Van Thy Nguyen was shining by his absence. The HIRED GUNS have undergone
several roster changes due to the emergence of a new team this year composed of ex-HG players, Conrad Plouffe, Greg Page and
Jason Leclair are now part of the OUTLAWS. The HIRED GUNS have replaced these
losses with the likes of Jimmy Pantelis, Alex Van Zeebrouck and Jimmy Garoufalis {in Jimmy’s case, will it be for the
entire season ?? } FIRST GOAL = Gabe Valente {1} 1st period 5:05 Good pressure down low by the HIRED GUNS produces chaos and confusion amongst the DRAGONS defense. Rebounds galore return gleefully onto HIRED GUNS’ sticks, the third kick
at the can results on a Gabe Valente snapper, mid-height, just inside the right post past a fallen Reggie. HIRED GUNS 1-0 SECOND GOAL = Rick Mezey {1} 1st period 5:44 The DRAGONS answer right back with a good clear from John Wong, deep in DRAGONS defensive zone, on
the right side. The clearing pass makes its way towards Rick Mezey who swoops

receives a pass from Marc Goyens and advances along the left wing. Tom Page sets
up in the slot. Foster is able to lure Réal Paquette away from Page and move
towards him. Foster makes a quick short pass to Page who one-times it beyond
Reggie. HIRED GUNS 2-1 FOURTH GOAL = Henry Boyer {1} 1st period 13:57 Henry Boyer, deep from his own zone, fires a high slapshot towards the DRAGONS net. Reggie makes the grab but sees the ball pop out of his glove, drop behind him and roll into the net. An ugly goal that Reggie would certainly want to have back. HIRED GUNS 3-1 FIFTH GOAL = Franco San Gregorio {1} 1st period 15:57 The DRAGONS claw their way back into the game. Rajesh
Patel, playing on defense, makes a move from the left side, cuts towards the middle and directs a pass towards Franco San
Gregorio located in the right wing slot. Franco advances a few feet and directs
a shot that beats Jimmy G. HIRED GUNS 3-2 SIXTH GOAL = Franco San Gregorio {2} 1st period 18:57 The DRAGONS even the score on a nifty play from Franco San Gregorio.
John Wong sends a pass from the right side in the DRAGONS defensive zone towards George Kabenian located along the
right wing wall. George spots Franco ahead of him near the right post and fires
a hard pass towards him. Franco accepts the pass, cuts in front of Jimmy G.,
beats him towards the left post and buries the ball into the back of the net. SCORE TIED 3-3 SEVENTH GOAL = Rick Mezey {1} 1st period 19:23 On the ensuing faceoff, George Kabenian wins it and directs the ball to his left towards Rick Mezey. Rick unloads a wicked slapper which beats Jimmy G. in the top left corner of the net. DRAGONS 4-3 EIGHTH GOAL = Tom Page {2} 1st period 22:38 In a continuing wild first period, the HIRED GUNS rally. Once
again, with good downlow pressure, Ian Foster sets up the play on the left side and finds an open Tom Page in the slot. Tom, instead of going for his patented backhand move when he’s in close, goes
on the forehand. This surprises Reggie and the shot finds an opening near the
left post. SCORE TIED 4-4 NINTH GOAL = Tom Page {3} 1st period 24:34 Controversial goal here. The head ref, Billy Ponting,
awarded the goal to Tom Page stating that his right wing shot had fully crossed the goal line after Reggie Proulx had made
a partial save. A good view from the DRAGONS bench showed the ball had never
made it across the goal line. I have to say here that Billy missed the call on
this one. HIRED GUNS 5-4 TENTH GOAL = Ian Foster {1} 2nd period 14:19 The sixth HIRED GUNS goal follows a familiar pattern. Great
downlow pressure, the DRAGONS defense overwhelmed, Reggie scrambling all over the place.
Ian Foster picks up a loose ball situation after two consecutive rebounds, takes his time and fires a shot into the
upper right corner while Reggie was down and trying to cover anything low. HIRED GUNS 6-4 ELEVENTH GOAL = Franco San Gregorio {3} 15:42 Rick Mezey and Franco San Gregorio create havoc in the left wing area during a DRAGONS offensive spurt. Rick fights off one HIRED GUNS defender and forwards a pass towards Franco. He approaches the left post then cuts towards the middle. While
being checked by another HG defender, Franco fires off a shot which is partially stopped by Garoufalis. The ball squirts through and lands behind the goalie and across the goal line. HIRED GUNS 6-5 DRAGONS RECAP = Absence of a shooter from the D position hurst the offense as the forwards are left
to themselves on too many occasions. Inadequate downlow defending results in
an abundance of scoring chances for the opposition. Franco San Gregorio scores
a hat trick in his first CASC game. HIRED GUNS RECAP = Terrific downlow pressure produces 5 goals.
Ian Foster QB’s the HG offense. HG slot defense exposed on two goals
from San Gregorio when cutting in towards the middle produces results. Ian Foster
ends the match with 5 pts while Tom Page scores a hat trick. FINAL SCORE
