CASC PLAYER SALARIES OUT OF CONTROL
Mike Murphy's mega contract stirring turmoil amongst team owners
October 13 1998
What had always been amicable relations between all 6 CASC team
owners have suddenly turned into sour grapes over the latest mega
contract signing in the CASC Ball Hockey League.
The main culprit is Bluedogs owner Cookie Nethersole who has been
under heavy criticism from every CASC team owner after signing
second year forward Mike Murphy to an unprecedented 7 year
$105 000 000 contract that will handsomely pay Mr Murphy an annual
salary of $15 000 000 US. "Mike was about to walk out on us in the
off-season and was also contemplating retirement. I had to do what
was necessary in order to keep Mike in a Bluedog jersey. We now have
our main man signed. The Bluedogs will be competitive for many
more years with Murph around" said Cookie. On top of his $15 000 000
annual salary, Murphy's contract is loaded with bonus and incentive
clauses that could easily boost his salary to a whopping
$25 000 000 US per year.
When asked to comment on his new contract at a recent press
conference, Murphy broke down in tears and was a man of few words.
"The contract is added security for me and my family. It puts food
on the table and I now have the privilege to order a quart of
beer instead of my usual regular bottle at Inverness Pub".
The five other CASC owners are fuming at Cookie Nethersole for
throwing insane amounts of money at Murphy. "The Murphy contract
is an abberation. It's Bruce McNall style ownership at it's best.
And look at him now; he's in the slammer" said Four Aces owner
Bebeto Lotti. "Plus Murphy is the only guy in the league who's
paid in US dollars. That's bad news for me. I'm used to paying
my players in Brasilian chump change currency and now they'll all
want to be paid in US. I think I'm gonna put my team up for sale".
Renegades owner Zigfried Knapp is also livid. "I've built this
team from scratch through the farm system, to the all-star squad it
is today. Yes, I've rewarded my players with handsome contracts,
but $15 000 000 a year for Murphy! Are you out of you're fu#%^*%
mind! That's $5 000 000 more than Ian Foster, who already makes
a mint"
According to sources close to the Blizzard, owner Sylvester
Staric, nicknamed "deep pockets", is close to breaking his stand
against Murphy's mega deal in order to sign some big name free
agents of his own in the off-season.
The Blizzard are a healthy franchise that have accumulated a
huge budget surplus. Their payroll is second last in the league at
$22 350 000. Their competitive play early on this season has won
them over many new fans; their 2 home games this year in their state
of the art $600 000 000 Ice Storm Palace have been complete sellouts.
The rest of their home games are all sold out. The Blizzard also
lead the league in merchandise sales. The "I'm a Staric Fanatic"
T-Shirt is the league's best selling item with gross monthly sales
in excess of $100 000.
Blizzard ownership is said to be looking for two big name veteran
free agents to compliment their impressive lineup of young superstars.
Sylvester Staric is a ruthless owner who wants to bring a
championship to his team by any means necessary. He's apparently
very interested in signing the "Sicilian Connection" of Joe Lazzara
and Paul iacurto, who will both be Group A Unrestricted Free Agents
at the end of the season. Accoding to recent reports, Staric is
ready to dish out $25 000 000 a year for both players in order to
secure their services. These contracts will make them the richest
players in CASC history. Lazzara's agent Rocco Broccolini has already
begun preliminary talks with Staric. "If I make that kind of money,
I think I'll be able to buy my own wine" said Lazzara. "I'll now be
able to own that WWF greatest moments collection I always wanted"
said Iacurto.
Here'a a list of the 10 richest men in the CASC Ball Hockey League
for the 1998-99 season. Team salaries are also included.
************ NOTE ****************
These salaries do not represent real life earnings. Please
do not be offended if you earn less money than someone else.
That doesn't mean that you're not as good a player than a
player who makes more money than you.
