Bruisers 5 vs Mavericks 4
by Penny Michael and Sue Stacho

LOCATION: Pierrefonds Que
TIME: Nap Time
WHO: Penny and Sue

Sue: Who did we play????

Penny: Black, no that was last week..That Chick, the tall one... What team is she on? UHHHHHHHHHH, Oh yeah The Mavericks. No it was not... Oh ya, I remember now!!! Nadine. I still have the bruise on my ..., she sure has a wicked shot.

Sue: Did you hear about Nancy's boyfriend?

Penny: See, that is why you have no clue who we played. No wonder Jennifer can not find anyone to pass too, poor girl must think we are nuts. Good think at least Chris watches the game.

Sue: Yeah, so she can yell at us. "SUE SUE SUE SUE! The game! We are losing time! The game! The game! What side are you on? Who is there? There is nobody there..."

Penny: Who was that goalie??? She was awesome. Wendy, yeah, I hope we get her again. I am glad I did not score on her. See I told you she was good.

Sue: Do you remember who scored?? Nancy must have scored and Catherine had her peanut butter sandwich so she must have got a few points, Chris is always on the score board and oh yeah Tara got one with that prissy shot.

Penny: Did you get any points?

Sue: NO. Did you?

Penny: NO Whatsup with that!

Sue: What about that brute..you know, your sister in law!! She likes being the time keeper so much she needs to sit on that bench..hmmmmm.

Penny: Well she did have some company, Rachel seems to like that spot too. Rachel, she is really doing great, It must be all the prolactin.

Sue: We have had a great start so far. It is always so much fun. Can't wait till next week.

Bruisers 4 vs Buddies 4
by Tara Mitrovka

Well...two teams can't ask for a more even game than this!
Both the Bruisers and Buddies spent an equal amount of time in each other's zones. With Hanh in nets for the Bruisers and Joyce as goalie for the Buddies, the final shots on net were Bruisers: 32, Buddies: 26.

In the first period, Catherine scored for the Bruisers in a goal assisted by Tara and Rachel at 23:15. The rest of this period consisted mainly of giggling by Sue, with the occasional curse thrown in by Tara.

For the second period, the Bruisers, down by a couple of goals, came out swinging. At 2:30 into the period, Jen got on the scoreboard with a goal assisted, once again, by Rachel. Not content to be a bridesmaid, at 8:00 minutes, Rachel put one in unassisted--take that! Finally at 19:00 minutes, Jen scored her second goal of the night, assisted by Tara.

The final score was 4-4. Good game, ladies!

Mavericks 8 vs Black 3

Backdraft 6 vs Black 2
by Joyce Turner

Coming into the game, Backdraft had already played all the other teams in the division, and hadn't lost. Facing (3 time champion) Black is never to be taken lightly, but Black is winless this year, not playing the best hockey we've seen them play. Would Black come on extra strong to give themselves their first win in five games? Would Backdraft suffer its first loss against the last place team?

The game started late as expected with 6:30 games. But running almost 15 minutes into the first period before we started is too much. Is 6:30 too early for many people to make it? Or did the construction on Decarie slow everyone down that fifteen minutes? Should the game times be changed to 6:45? Or would that mean people would show up at 7?

So, since it was ten minutes long, the first period was over before we knew it. There was no scoring and not much action in the first period.

The scoring picked up in the second period when Jen and Wendy made a couple of nice passes, setting up Jen to score right off the first face-off. Backdraft (well Jen) scored 2 more quick ones before Black could score one of their own. But Backdraft followed with the next 3 2 by Jen and 1 by Ina on a great move from behind the net. Black scored one more late in the period, but throughout the game they didn't get the scoring chances they needed.

Backdraft defense played another solid game, allowing only 13 shots on net, keeping the ball in Blacks end, and not allowing the Black forwards to set up their nice passes.

Overall the game seemed to lack some intensity, partly perhaps because of the lost time, but the fact that the Black team played with nine players may have been a factor. With five on the bench youve too long to rest between shifts and you cant keep your lines consistent

Mavericks 9 vs Buddies 3
by Paula Dery

The Mavericks started this game with 8 players, going for a record of full attendance 2 games in a row (alas France is still out with an injury). The Buddies were still missing their star player Carine but were just one short on the bench. It was going to be a good game.

The Mavericks seemed to be hitting their stride as they reorganised a few positions within the team. Celyne being the playmaker on defence, and a new passing game is being developed on the team. Sandra has moved up front and is turning into quite the forward. Veteran defensemen Suzanne and Paula have stepped up their passing play to help out the forwards. New players Brigitte and Ronnie are also very much doing their part. Stars Van and Nadine, well, they just keep doing what they do best: scoring goals. Formerly known as the team that doesnt pass, the Mavs are discovering new territory and doing quite well at it.

The Buddies were welcoming back Vannara, but her partner in scoring Mackie was nowhere to be found. The Buddies were having difficulty shooting on net. Lyne, Vannara and new Buddy Isabelle were able to score a goal apiece on Hanh who was in nets for the Mavs with 17 shots on net. Sue on the otherhand was bombarded with 32 shots on net: including 3 goals for Nadine, 2 each for Sandra and Van and 1 for Ronnie. Mavs defenseman all assisted and at least 1 of the goals.

It was a good game for the Mavs that are trailing in 5 th place, but are on a 2 game streak. If they can keep up the attendance, they can probably move up in the standings.

All the teams seem to have improved a lot during the summer and the standings reflect a flip flop of last years with the Black team still winless and going through some difficult times on their team. We hope that they'll get it together with consistent attendance and give us all a run for our money as they do every year.

C'est toute, c'est toute, c'est toute!

Bruisers 3 vs Backdraft 2
By Tara Mitrovka

Ho! Ho! Ho! Did Santa come early this year, or did we beat the unbeatable?

The underdogs--I mean the Bruisers--came out on top with a well-fought win over Backdraft.

Vangie had the challenge, er, honour, of being in nets for us and did a fantastic job of fighting off Backdraft. Both Vangie and Chantal (in nets for Backdraft) were assailed with shots--32 each, to be precise. Excellent job, ladies! There were two penalties, but the game was clean.

Backdraft scored first in the first period with a goal from Jennifer, assisted by Shannon. They followed with another for good measure soon after with a goal by Joyce, assisted. Wait--can you hear it? Is that the fat lady singing? No way, we don't give up so easily! Rachel came to the rescue
with a goal assisted by Chris. Then, late in the first, Catherine tied it up with a goal assisted by Chris and Rachel. Can you feel the excitement building?

Midway through the second period, Jen McComb put in the go-ahead goal for the Bruisers, assisted by Nancy. Now we were laughin', right? Ha! Backdraft turned it up a few notches and after several near-misses, and many loud screeches from the Bruiser bench, the game mercifully ended in a score of
3-2 for the BRUISERS!!! Way to fight for it, ladies!

Black 11 vs Buddies 1
by Demitria Vlouhos

One thing is for sure...being positive, in good spirits and always remembering to have fun makes a difference. The Black team simply lost the feeling of that and more for a while. We knew we had to do something not because we hadn't won a single game but because of how we felt. The energy, the will to simply play and get excited was dug somewhere underneath all of us. Well....the Black team being aware of this and wanted to make a change, decided they had to get that feeling back especially now with all their members there. It felt like the old times. On the other side though there was that emptiness seeing the Buddies without one of their teammates Carine and some others, we know how that felt. But nonetheless, Buddies came out to play not knowing the Black team was hoping to be back on track starting that day. They were!
They simply kept it going and going. The Buddies played their game as best they could and on any other day in September they would have had us but we had a changed frame of mind one that we had missed and because of that it was hard to let go. Jennifer kept trying to take a breather as she rambled and scrambled in front of the net and definitely making some superb stops. Joyce in nets for us was strong, kept smiling and encouraging us. It's about time we got our act together...these poor goalies were probably wondering what the heck happened to this team?! We hung in there and just gave it what we had and the excitement was back. We had a difficult time controlling our emotions and it wasn't because we kept scoring but because we were back on track...playing with heart and having a good time. We didn't just win a game.... we won our positive spirits back and that mattered more than anything!
Buddies, Matilde, Jennifer and Joyce thank you for your kind words.... it meant alot.

Mavericks 10 vs Stone Angels 6

Quel match!

Mavericks 7 vs Bruisers 3
by Paula Dery

The Mavs were looking to add to their 3 game winning streak. Celyne "7-3-5-3-2-3-7-3" or something like that (love that 5 week shift work) was luckily very much in winning form on this fine evening. She was hungry for some points and did not disappoint. Bruisers on the other hand were missing their play director, Christyne, and we were glad. Christyne is very disciplined and knows the game well. She, among other things, keeps the players focused and motivated.

The Mavs are still getting used to having Celyne on defense and Sandra "The Enforcer" was absent. Suzanne replaced her up front and had many good shots on net but alas, Jennifer, goalie for the Bruisers on this evening, would not let her shots in. The Van Khanh - Nadine line was in fine form and did most of the damage.

Penny "if you hold a stick down long enough to have a conversation, its too long" Michael, best sister in law in town, was at her best screaming out "she doesn't need it! she doesnt want it!" to which we have become accustomed. (Notice how I don't mention who scored, it's because I can't remember!). Da Bruisers (kudos to Real Paquette) picked up the pace in the second half, but Joyce in nets was doing her best to keep the shots out. Mavs were happy to win this one, which catapulted them into 2nd place in the standings. Two weeks ago they were floundering in 5th. And without a banner! Perhaps that is what's needed to defeat Backdraft...

The evening ended at Momesso's Restaurant with a nice group of 12. Good food, cheap beer on tap, and (note to Black team) a fine selection of Italian coffees. Take note, South side of Upper Lachine road (basement), near Girouard, a hop, skip and a jump from Villa Maria gym.

THE SECRET GAME That I just heard about because I lunch with the President's wife
By Suzanne Solomon

On Thursday, November 8th, 2001 at 6:30 pm, a group of ball hockey players got together in Pointe-St-Charles to play an exhibition game for charity (Centraide). A team of RGA employees assembled by our illustrious President Theo Michael battled it out against a group I like to call the CASC Selects And Me Because Joyce Was Injured And Leonard Is A Boy (CSAMBJWIALIAB) for two 26 minute periods. Notable on the RGA team, were Cloe of the Thursday night Black Team and Sylvain of the Tuesday night Freezer 10. The CSAMBJWIALIAB, put together by Jennifer Jones-Patulli, consisted of Regent in nets. Greg, Kam, Valerie and Paula played defence. The offence consisted of Carine, in a much anticipated return to the wonderful life of ball hockey, Jennifer, Anthony and my own sweet self (because Joyce was injured and Leonard is a boy). Jimmy officiated. Joyce videotaped the event.

This game was notable in two respects. 1. There were spectators who weren't there just because they were waiting for their game to start. And 2. THERE WERE NO STATS. That is right, you heard correctly: NO STATS. And yet, Theo was very much involved. Indeed, he stood on the sidelines, shouting encouragement in support of his workmates: "RGA! RGA! RGA!" or "Cloe you can hit him!". You'd think a little feeling of divided loyalties would have crept into his conscience, but noooooooo.

I think the score was 4 nothing for the CSAMBJWIALIAB, but other than that I couldn't tell you much, which makes the writing of this recap a surprisingly simple, albeit somewhat futile, experience. I do not know how many shots on goal there were, except to say quite a few by the CSAMBJWIALIAB and not so many by the RGA team. I know I didn't score and neither did my very patient linesman Anthony. I don't think I could have possibly fanned the ball more or shot the ball into the goalies' pads more often if I had tried. I believe Carine, Jennifer and Kam scored with assists from eachother and Greg and Paula (mea culpa to any point getters I left out). Oh yeah, and in the first period, there was a penalty against us when, suddenly, Anthony ended up on top of the RGA goalie in his crease. I'm talking the crease of his pads!

Of note on the RGA team, were two defencewomen, Jennifer Brodeur and Jose Malboeuf. They were excellent at clearing the ball from in front of the net. Their goalie, Claude Beaulieu, was also in top form. The R G A team was rounded out by players Danielle Touzele, Carolyn Swift, Sergiu Tavitian, Marie-Josee Blanchet and last but not least Dominic Hains.

What else to say? I had a lot of fun. I'm sorry it was at the expense of Joyce's twisted ankle and Leonard's gender, but hey, there's no crying in ball hockey.

Black 12 vs Mavericks 2
by Paula Dery

What to say about this game? Well, let's just say that we didn't have any illusions that we were going to win. With only 4 players and no one on the bench, Suzanne said, "look, let's just pace ourselves and have fun". We all agreed and you know what? We had a blast.

It's funny how different a player can feel when the pressure is off. Our first objective: don't get mercy ruled in the first period.

The Black team was in fine form with all their players and they were also in the midst of a comeback. They played really well, probably holding back a little to be kind but they clearly dominated the game.

Suzanne got a break away and scored unassisted on Hanh, and Sandra was also able to sneak one in with Suzanne's help, but for the rest, it was all Black, all twelve goals, which 9, if I'm not mistaken were scored by Nellie. Sue, in nets for the Mavericks probably got the workout of her life. Unfortunately, the 12th goal was scored in the last minute of the game.

Let's just hope the Mavs will get their attendance back to normal for next week.

Mavericks 4 vs Buddies 2

Black 7 vs Stone Angels 4
by Demitria Vlouhos

I said it last year that the Stone Angels were a team to watch out for. They have definitely come together beautifully. They have a good set up every shift one that you have to strategize against (even if it is all for fun), but this makes it so much fun!

The first goal was put in by them and basically after that it was a close game. The Black team had to make sure they stayed on top of them at all times because any opening would mean a goal. Defense was superb on both sides with both goalies and defencewomen making some really great blocks. Recchi (Arianthi) and roadrunner (Cathy) did an outstanding job of simply not allowing Chantal get in one of her great, precise shots especially towards the end of the game as it was all Stone Angels in the Black zone. This is not to say that the Stone Angels didn't manage to get a few in. Oh yes they did.

Now I know there were girls who scored a few goals but I want to mention one girl who did score her first goal and we are very proud of.....Chloe. Chloe joined the league and like most of us in the beginning try to get used to the game, the pace, the rules, the nervous excitement. She has really tried to make it work, she's definitely still learning like many of us, but I know she will be one of those girls to watch out for in the future. We congratulate her on her first goal and the excitement and good shock we saw on her face was the best part of Thursdays game.

Happy Holidays to you all and your families.
